Trapped By Lies

When Louisiana-born Jasmine Du Maurier first saw the tall, rugged stableboy currying her horse, the jet-haired minx knew she'd found the perfect way to thwart her father's plans to marry her off: she'd wed this lowborn servant, later annul the marriage, and live happily-and independently-ever after. But after the ceremony, when Jasmine noticed his speech was refined, his manner aristocratic, and his touch electric, the strong-willed girl realized she'd made a mistake. Now that she was so close to achieving her liberty, she craved the bonds of her man's embrace and the duties of matrimony's bed!

Tricked By Desire

Broad, towering Anthony Montgomery didn't bother to correct the bossy sprite when she assumed he was the stableboy. As a colonial agent, he didn't want to reveal his identity. Then when Jasmine practically ordered him to be her grom, Anthony went along with the deception for fun. But once he became aware that she was truly his, the hot-blooded spy had to claim her satin flesh as his own. His mind dictated that he demand the annulment and forget the luscious temptress...but his body clamored to be one with Jasmine and desire demanded he make her his

There was so much crazy in this. The author most definitely had a trope Bingo card in front of her when she wrote it. There's quite a bit that doesn't make a whole lot of sense if you think about it, so don't. Just go with it.

This is set during the Revolutionary War in America. Jasmine lives in NY with her American mother who had left her husband in England years before. Her mother left because the husband was a cruel, cold SOB. Besides, he could care less about having a woman around since he was gay and only married her for her family's money. He was especially mean to Jasmine, his supposed daughter, and I'm not sure why. She at least gave some cred to his marriage/sexuality, although he knew he couldn't be the father since he'd never touched the mother. Oh well, guess he was just cranky. Dude hated kittens, enough said.

One day Jasmine goes to the place where her horse is stabled and meets Anthony whom she mistakes for a stable hand. He goes along with it to amuse himself, even faking a Cockney accent. Jasmine is totally fooled since she is a ridiculous, spoiled little snob. Of course, she is unbelievably gorgeous and Anthony is hot for her.

Anthony (who has a lot of irons in the fire already) gets a job at the stable just so he can see Jasmine again after that very brief meeting. He's always there when she comes to ride her horse, playing the part of stable boy. He's always doing something to "accidentally" feel her up or get close to her. Jasmine decides this obviously must mean he's simpleminded, which explains why such a hot, virile looking man would be a simple stable boy. Jasmine is a snob, but not mean hearted. She'd never be cruel to someone who was mentally challenged, so she's very sweet to Anthony. He figures out what she's thinking and decides to go along with that too, because it gives him even more opportunity to take liberties with her person.

She hears that her father is coming from England with a man he's going to marry her off to. Knowing her dad, she's has no faith in the type of man he'd choose for her. So, she decides a "fake marriage" with dear sweet, simple Anthony (aka. Monty) is the answer to her problems. She'll just dress him up like a gentleman and have him pretend to have a throat injury so she can do all the talking and convince Daddy she's already married and he should run along back to England. Anthony goes along with this one too, but here's where things get really crazy. The 'fake' marriage ceremony Anthony sets up is a real one (Jasmine really was the true simpleton).

This book is WTF CRACK-TASTIC in all the best and worst ways. Beware, spoilers below

If you love or hate books with the following tropes, this may or may not be the perfect book for you:

The crazy just keeps coming in this book. It made me laugh, cry and want to shred the book every other page. Definitely an occasional wall thumper of a book, and wanting to equally strangle both hero and heroine at times.

Jasmine and Anthony
What a shit-show.

I'm at 205 pgs in and ALL of the men in this book are sociopaths. It might be a DNF for me

Pg255- It's a misogynistic shit show.
Anthony is just mean for no reason.
Mean and dumb. With no control of himself.
He's abusive. He's paranoid. He's a coward. He lies. He's too proud.
He doesn't learn from his mistakes.
He doesn't accept responsibility for his actions.
He makes ridiculous choices.
There is no reason to like him.
He isn't suitable for a relationship.
Anthony is a zero, not a hero.

New male characters are added half way through that are better than Anthony. But the Author killed them off.

Jasmine forgives way too easily.
Jasmine apologizes for things Anthony deserves.
She's high spirited but not mean hearted. I did like her and felt really sorry for her.
Anthony loved degrading her. He was such an ass.

Great cover.
Great title.
Crappy male lead.
Creole does not exist past thvillain.

Triggers:
Animal abuse
Noncon
Hanging of a black man
Abuse
Miscarriage
Gay male portrayed as villian.
Misogynistic slurs- Anthony was a real loser. DUMB AF.

DNF.

This is a new Author for me.
I cannot see myself going for seconds.
