Places that never were; Places that might have been. Monsters that terrify brave men; Myths that amaze everyone. Stories of mystery and mythology, from a real and imagined past.
From the banks of the Nile, the Answerers, small human figures of clay or stone who come alive to do their master's bidding in the afterworld.
From the evil land of Mordor, the dark Lord Sauron, who tries to undo all the good in the world.
From Hades, the Greek underground, where eternal gloom and boredom engulf all comers.
And from Shangri-la, high in the mountains of Tibet, where no one grows old... as long as the stay there!
A dictionary of stories and myths that will excite, enchant, entertain you. More than 150 entries.
Aside from the one missing page when it came to Atlantis (people who rip pages out of books should be yeeted into the Styx), I devoured this entire book in one sitting. It was so interesting and reading about Cloud Cuckoo Place, or Nephelococcygia, got me excited about Anthony Doerr's upcoming novel. It also made me add Aristophanes' The Birds to my ever-growing TBR stack.
Another book I brought as a child because it had a cool cover 🤪. It’s a dictionary of mystical places. Not great. Not really something you read cover to cover.
There are some interesting inclusions from more modern works, like Tolkien, in this handy little dictionary. I enjoyed reading it, and shall be keeping it for a reread.
