Good is Wicked and Wicked is Good in the New York Times bestselling Dorothy Must Die series!
This digital original novella is the ninth and final installment in the series’ prequel arc. It reveals the mysterious backstory of Ozma—and how she went from fairy princess to the rightful ruler of Oz.
Young Mombi was never the best witch in Oz. She wasn’t the most talented, or the most powerful. But when the Wizard knocks on her door holding a baby girl who needs protection, Mombi agrees to take the job. She casts one powerful, surprising spell—hiding the baby where no one would find her. Years later, a boy named Pete goes on a journey to the Emerald City, where he learns the truth about his true identity…and his role in Oz’s destiny.
You know how I just mentioned that I was all caught up in the novellas for this series? Well, I wasn't wrong. Here is the last one to write about.
The Queen of Oz is where we meet Mombi. Now she is adorable and just wants to learn the old magic. So for some odd reason she goes to Glinda the good witch to see if she will held her out. Little does she know that Glinda the good witch isn't so good. No, she seems to act just like Dorothy because that girl is so god damn self-centered and power-hungry herself. Once she realizes what Mombi can do with what little magic she has.. she just wants her to grab her things and change them pink. For a example, a dragon.
I felt bad for Mombi in this book because of she was treated by Glinda. However, she goes on her own and learns old magic from the old fairy queens. Yes, you read that right. She also gets the opportunity to watch over princess ozma until the wizard comes back. Little does Mombi actually know about her magic, because soon Ozma isn't a girl anymore but a young human boy named Pete.
It was interesting to read more about that little background because I was always wondering on how they were transforming throughout the series. Sucks to suck that Glinda found him and shit and changed Pete back to Ozma. Mostly because Ozma still isn't herself.. so she will be easy to manipulate.
After reading this book, I can't decided if I just want to dive back into the whole series and read the last book? Decisions, decisions.
Booring! So very boring and once again pointless. In spite of the fact that I read all these novellas. I would not recommend most of them. There are just to many novellas and each one is worse than the one before. Thankfully they are short and won't take long to read if you choose to.
I'm sad that this is the last of the prequels to Dorothy Must Die. I love this series. I love the regular books, too, but the novellas are my favorite. In this one, we get a glimpse into the backstory of how Ozma came to be entrusted with Mombi, and how Mombi turned her into Pete. This story is mostly about Pete, which was a little disappointing to me because I was looking forward to more backstory on Ozma herself. Still, this was a solid end to the prequels. I wish there were more!
Oh my god I’m finally done with this series. Little sad but mostly relieved. I’ll always love this series but when I look back everything was always surface level if that makes any sense. Some of the books and prequels are exceptions but for the most part it could have been so much better but nevertheless love it so much. Also ngl I think there were spin-off series it would have made this series come full circle. I need to stop. Love this so much.
This along with No Place like Oz and Dark Side of the Rainbow were the best short stories out of the 9 !! Definitely worth it if you plan on delving into the novellas
Para ser el final de 9 precuelas estaba muy emocionado de lo que trataría pero me aburrió mucho. Al principio iba muy bien y después se volvió aburrido.
"Beneath the mask of Goodness lurked a manipulative, power-hungry witch who abused her power over those weaker than she was."
HOLY CRAP THAT is how you end these character prequel novellas! This one was way fun and to have a backstory of Mombi but most of all Ozma and how she came to be the Queen of Oz was an interesting story. Now to look back on the rest of the prequel character stories, I'm more than stoked for the main series and to see what's in store. I had a hard time binge reading and even listening at some point tothese stories and ugh! I NEED MORE!!! Now it's onto Dorothy Must Die and see what's in store for not just Dorothy, but everyone else mentioned in these stories.
"Mombi was neither a Good witch nor a Wicked witch-not yet. In fact, she was hardly a witch at all." *3.25 This was actually really interesting. I found it boring at times and just wanted to be through with it, but nonetheless it was still very interesting. I liked the part about Mombi more so than the parts about Pete. It gave insight to Mombi's story and how Pete/Ozma came to be raised by her which I really liked. The Queen of Oz was amazing!! I wanted to know more of Pete’s story. We all know who Pete is truly, but to listen to how “he” experienced life growing up was the best part of that twist.
Also, I don’t think people give Danielle Paige enough credit for bringing LGBT issues into her novel. The fact that Pete’s feelings about “himself” and “his” feelings about Jackson were the center point in the novella was amazing to see and gave me gooseys.
Thanks Danielle for wonderful novellas to go with your amazing novels.
Also, Again, Devon Sorvari really knocks this audiobook out of the park!!! Audiobooks ALWAYS recommended.
Mombi wants to be a powerful witch so she heads to Glinda's castle. However, Glinda isn't as good as we've been led to believe so after a brief time with her, Mombi heads home disappointed. She then receives a visit from Lurline, the fairy who created Oz who has something up her sleeve for the future of Oz. Mombi is tasked with taking in Pete, a baby of curious origin. Can she keep Pete safe until Oz needs him or will Glinda track him down?
The 9th novella in the Dorothy must die series is the story of ozmas childhood. It starts from mombis pov when ozma is brought to her as a baby then jumps ahead 13 years and is from Petes pov. It was interesting getting to know Pete a little better as he was always quite mysterious in the book. An enjoyable read
This was a novella in the series that told about how Pete came about and how Ozma was eventually restored to the Emerald City. I liked getting a closer look into Mobi as a character and seeing different sides of Glinda and Glamora. It was also very cute to see Pete's interaction with the munchkin he met. I really liked this addition to the story!
This was definitely not my favorite novella of all novellas. The story revolves around Ozma and Pete and how they came to be. It starts off with Mombi and how she became what is in the other books. It does once again provide a decent amount of background info of the characters.
The final novella of the Danielle Paige’s Dorothy Must Die prequel series is Queen of Oz and this, as you might guess, is about Ozma. I never did read the Wizard of Oz books as a kid, so I suspect that there was a lot more detail to Oz than what MGM showed us with Judy Garland! I watched the Emerald City mini-series earlier this year as well, and I think that may have even helped me a little bit in understanding some of the stories of Oz that I didn’t know about before.
Mombi is a young girl who wants to be a witch, a good witch mind you. She has some magical abilities, but she wants to learn more. So she goes to Glinda in hopes of becoming her apprentice of sorts. Naturally things don’t quite go as planned, as Glinda isn’t really up for teaching anybody anything to do with magic. Then Lurline, a fairy queen, comes to Mombi and tells her that she must go hide in secret and to care for this child, Ozma. For she is the true ruler of Oz and if any of her enemies would know about her, there would be great and terrible danger. This is when little Ozma gets transformed into a boy, by mistake, I think. And so Pete grows up thinking he’s nothing special except for Mombi’s servant boy.
It was another interesting little story. I can’t help but feel that maybe the order of these novellas got a little jumbled. Maybe not though. I did read them in a very odd order of the years with many books in between. It just felt like at times, Dorothy hadn’t returned yet, then she was, then she didn’t. I just would’ve thought that these novellas would follow a certain timeline. As in the last one I read the other day, Dorothy was back! Now in this one, she is apparently back in Kansas.
While it was still an interesting read, I couldn’t really figure out its point. It basically just shows us what Ozma was doing in her time away from the throne. Perhaps there’s a different order these novellas are meant to be in and that would’ve helped to make more sense. As this is the final one of the prequel series, it doesn’t really lead you right into Dorothy Must Die. But again, it was still an interesting read, just not as enlightening as I would’ve hoped for.
