In Introducing Gertrude, Gumshoe we meet Gertrude (Gert to her friends) a disabled cat lady whose a bit of a curmudgeon. After taking a count of her cats she discovers one has escaped her trailer and sets out with her walker to find Tornado (the missing cat). A woman and her two young children have recently moved into one of the trailers and it is here she discovers Tornado. Only the kids aren't at school and their mother is missing. What began as a quest to find their mom soon leads to a murder mystery. The cops dismiss, Gertrude's investigative skills and encourage her to go home, but she has evidence and sets out to save others and catch a killer! Oh lord, Gert is an absolute hoot. Rude, surly, and apt to say whatever pops out of her mouth, I couldn't help but laugh at her over the top antics. I wouldn't call her lovable but she is entertaining. She gains help from the disability van service, a friend and even enlists her reluctant neighbor Old Man Crow. Humor, a little suspense and Gertrude's over the top mannerisms, conversations, and actions made this a quick fun read. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

This was a quick and cute read that makes you smile as you read it because Gertrude is so off the wall.
Gertrude is a senior citizen who needs a walker to get around, Gertrude lives in a trailer park, is a cat lady, and hoarder. She stumbles onto a missing person case accidently. Gertrude decides that she is going to find the missing person, but things take a turn for the worse and now Gertrude decides she will solve the case, along with the help of her mechanic and a fellow trailer park senior.
She is sly like a fox and has lots of odd quirks, but she has lots of good intentions. I will be reading more Gertrude stories, as time allows, just for the feel of rooting for the slightly, ditzy senior.

This was a cute story about an older lady who owned several cats, trying to solve a mystery. Although most of it was very unbelievable from a reality stand point, it was a cute story. I could just picture "grandma" with her walker out there thinking she was a private detective. Good thing she didn't come across a ruthless serial killer. LOL

I am surprised at readers that find this book enjoyable.

I am amazed that it's consider it delightful and call it a cute cozy mystery. It was very hard to even finish this book. In the whole book there is not one character that is likeable. I found Gertrude to be cranky, rude and impatient with everyone she meets. She has a sense of entitlement, and she wants everyone to jump at her bidding, and let's not forget her self importance in wanting all the credit and fame connected to the case. Thank you or pleasantries are not in her wheelhouse. She doesn't even break the news of their mom's death to the kids in a sensitive manor. I got this book because of the positive reviews, and that was a big mistake. I will not read this author again. Her style of writing is more geared toward pre-teens.

Nice read! Humor and mystery. It is also a quick read (less than 200 pages) for a Large Print book, which I like.

Gertrude's on the Case !! . . .

This book will bring plenty of laughs as we meet an older lady, Gertrude, surrounded by her cats. She is a hoarder, quirky, an outspoken senior who hadn’t started out as a sleuth but jumped in with both feet when she decides to investigate a neighbor’s death. She drags in an unwilling partner, also a senior, and the banter will keep you laughing as she and “Old Man Crow” search for the murderer. (You will love it when a clue leads her to a seedy strip club and she has to rely on the Community Action Program van that takes seniors to medical appointments and such!) Can Gertrude solve the mystery? Has she discovered a new talent? Who will feed her cats when she’s out on a case?

While a there had to be a lot of suspension of disbelief, I did enjoy this. Gertrude is feisty, hard-headed, and a bit of a human bulldozer. She's one of those people you can laugh at but IRL you'd run from because she's demanding. She made me laugh, I enjoyed meeting Old Man Crow, and there were cats. So I'll just say it was a fun read and I'll be game for another. About a 3.5.

Gertrude is a cat lady. She discovers one of her cats is missing so she goes searching. She discovers her kitty with two children who are all alone. She learns that their mother hasn’t come home yet, so Gertrude goes looking for her. It’s not long before she realizes she has a murder on her hands.

Gertrude is no youngster and her walker doesn’t let her move around too quickly, but she is determined to help these children. With an assist from another neighbor, Gertrude is on the case of the missing mother.

To say Gertrude is a curmudgeon would be an understatement. She annoys everyone, but she never gives up her fight. She is LOL material to say the least. It takes some time to warm up to her, but her antics made me laugh from start to finish.

It’s a quick read and I’m glad to see there are more books for me to read. A senior sleuth and a house full of cats? The perfect series for me.

Amateur sleuth Gertrude Gumshoe teams up with her 71-year old neighbor Calvin Crow in search of local stripper/suspected blackmailer Trixie.

The senior duo share a few meals, irritate each other and stumble upon a few clues that when assembled correctly reveal the identity of Gertrude Gumshoes first PI case.

Introducing Gertrude Gumshoe, book 1 of 4 in Robin Merrill's Gertrude Gumshoe series, was a quick read and challenging to solve.

The story lacked strong characters which for me hindered the readers ability to connect with the characters beyond a superficial level. The lack of connectivity between the characters and myself resulted in a dry, uninviting story.

Not a bad book. Not a great book. Somewhat entertaining but not difficult to put down. In other words, a so-so book.

"Don't call me ma'am: I'm not old."
Meet Gertrude, an elderly (though she'd dispute that) and grouchy woman who lives with her assortment of cats in her trailer piled high with all sorts of odds and ends that might come in useful. She wields a walker to help her get around and is not, perhaps, the sharpest needle in the pack now, and somewhat out of touch with modern technologies. But when her beloved cat goes missing and is discovered in a neighbouring trailer being petted by two young children, alone and scared at the failure of their mother to return home, her natural nosiness and need to assert her right to interfere, has Gertrude first looking for the mother then tracking down a killer - with the reluctant assistance of her 71 years old neighbour. After all, he has a car. She is, quite frankly, a refreshingly unpleasant old women, pushy, judgemental, foolish but also determined and with a streak of kindness buried below the surface. Great characterisation by the author.

The whole book is quick and easy to read, the who-dun-it? plotline very much taking second place to the abrasive and bumbling obsession of Gertrude's investigation. It's funny and somehow very believable. And this reader, for one, felt an empathy with her. Narrator, Darlene Allen, does a good job with her portrayal of Gertrude and gives voice to the other protagonists also. She helps bring the whole story to life although I personally found speeding the replay to 1.25 beneficial in covering the odd little pauses which sometimes occured.

My thanks to the rights holder of Introducing Gertrude, who, at my request via Audiobook Boom, freely gifted me a complimentary copy. It was refreshingly different from the usually slick private eye stories and I wish Gertrude success in her gumshoe career: I'm looking forward to reading about more of her cases.

I enjoyed this book.it is the first book by this author I have listened to but I have already downloaded the next book. I wish it could have been longer at 3 hours and 46 minutes it is a bit shorter to the 9 or so hours I am use to but other than that I liked it. Gertrude is a fun character with plenty of spunk and a walking frame but she is not old. It is a fun light hearted and often humorous story. Well worth the listen.
When one of Gertrude's many cats goes missing she tracks it down to a neighbours caravan. Where she finds to children left alone with only her cat for company. There mother has gone missing and Gertrude has her first case, the only clue is to start at the strip joint where she works. Gertrude needs to enlist many of her fellow neighbours to help, mainly because she needs there car not there detecting skills, that she can manage by her self. It is not long before she stumbles over naughty photos, a blackmail scam and a dead body. Will Gertrude first case turn from investigation to body guarding? She fears for another strippers life and vowels to not let her become the next victim even if it means beating the killer off with a walker. Now if she could just master technology and cell phones as easy as it is to become a pi.
I liked the narrator and thought she was perfect for the elderly sluth. I did listen to is speeded up though.

Gertrude is a bit of a curmudgeon, so it’s comical to see her so determined to solve the case of her missing neighbor, which Gertrude learns about while searching for her missing cat. Will the hoarder, crazy cat lady turned detective be able to unravel who in town is a murderer?

While Gertrude is a bit cranky and impatient, she is still comical to follow in this quick read with a cozy-mystery feel, though it is a bit shorter than many in the genre. It’s nice to have an older main character, especially a feisty one. Humor is thrown into the mix when Gertrude finds herself at a strip club and water park.

This is the first book in the series. While I enjoyed it, I would have liked it to be a bit longer so that the characters and plot could be developed a bit more. However, I am interested in knowing what situations Gertrude finds herself in next.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of the book, but I was not required to leave a positive review.

"Introducing Gertrude, Gumshoe" is an unusual read with a cranky old woman as the lead character. She's not particularly pleasant to be around, lives in a trailer lot with many cats, and if there were prizes for hoarding she'd be heading for the podium.
If Gertrude has a heart of gold it is well hidden. She does have a certain homespun wit, but it's misplaced 99% of the time.
So she's an unlikely candidate for a plot involving murder, blackmail and strippers.
When she's dissed by the cops she decides to investigate the case herself and proceeds to do so in a somewhat unusual way, not letting her mysterious though handy 'disability' get in the way.
As an introduction to a series it is halfway successful - it made for a quick read though not one that spurred me on to read the next book.

I'd give this 3 1/2 stars.

A shorter book but quite a quirky main character. Gertrude doesn't seem to be the brightest bulb but manages to solve who murdered her neighbor...but not without putting herself in danger!

I like that Gertrude, while I don't think she is a senior citizen, is older and uses a walker. This does make it little harder for her to get around. At one point she decides to climb a lattice trellis. I really don't know what was going through her brain that she could do that if she has issues walking without a walker! But it just adds to the humor of the book.

This will be a funny cozy series for sure.

A really fun quick read. This was the first book in the series so I
will read others. Gertrude is a major pushy irritant old cat lady who manages to
end up investigating a murder in her little town of Mattawooptock
Maine. Her poor neighbors would really rather have her go away, but they
end up getting forced into taking her to the local water park where she finds
a dead body in the bouncy ball building. Then she drags
her next door neighbor , Old Man Crow, to the local strip club to question clients and strippers about
about the murdered exotic dancer. Gertrude can't help but get
involved no matter how many people ask her not too!

I picked up a month of Kobo+ as the last book i read was available on there, and I thought I’d take a swing on a cozy mystery that sounded cute enough.
However- I don’t think I’ve ever heard the word “stripper” used contemptuously so many times. Also there is a disabled protagonist but like- it’s kind of used as a *~quirk*~ and something that people are ANNOYED and even violent about?

I was mildly curious about where this could possibly go so I read on, but honestly cannot recommend this book, and this is my cautionary tale about trusting THE BLURB, and not doing my research. An icky vibe all around!

This is the first time reading this author and the first Gertrude story. Gertrude is a an older woman with a walker and a trailer full of cats who, who decides she is going to solve the murder of a neighbor who she didn't even really know. She has a strange way of getting all kinds of people to help her. At the same time she does somehow figure things out and solves it mystery before she is almost killed herself. She is a character for sure and I'm not sure I really like her sometimes. She become someone real. I think I must read more to find out if I like her.

A cozy mystery with lots of humor, new to me author and series, and it's got cats in it, lots of them.

Passed the time and there are some good one liners of humor in the book. I'm not sure I'd read them again, but they're funny and the story is ok, a little far fetched in places but sometimes we need a little escapism, and this is pure escapism!

If you need a chuckle, and let's face it, 2020 and 2021 haven't been great, then this is the series for you.

I'll read the rest of the books in the series.

I certainly enjoyed this one despite my very low expectations. I wasn’t expecting an older MC but it was a pleasant surprise and I liked her interactions with other characters despite the several quirks. At some point, it did feel a bit ridiculous and like the writer is being too much - especially all that phone drama - but keeping that aside, this was a decent book. There were a few typos which made me think this probably needed a tad bit more editing but it still fared better than what i had in mind when i picked this up.

This is the first book by Robin Merrill I've ever read/listened to. It was ok but I wasn't fond of the narrator for this one. Gertrude is an older gal with a walker and a nosy streak. No tact and a brand new cell phone that she calls a jitterbug, A lady is murdered and Gertrude makes it her business to find out who killed her. With forays into a strip club and getting her friend Calvin to drive her around town there is a few moments of pure fun. Who killed the woman and why? will Gertrude find out or will she become the next body???

The whole story is a big round about of following clues and with Gertrude, her stubbornness and weird optimism for her own sleuthing prowess, you get some funny quips from her, but overall the story was fairly flat. In this story we find Gertrude, an in denial of old age woman who, in the process of looking for one of her many cats, discovers two children at home in their trailer alone. Determined to find their mother, she sets off to look for her with the help of her walker and neighbor Mr. Crow. She then discovers a dead body and thinks she can solve the case. The story follows her around trying to solve this case, but it feels like a mad house with the way Gertrude discovers things and does things. It literally screams that you have an old person who buts into everybody's business and is, quite frankly, annoying. Aside from some humor from her stubbornness, there really isn't much else to the story.

A nice, light change of pace. It was just a fun little book, and had a few genuinely funny spots where I laughed out loud. Worth the time to read when you want a change from the serious.

A nice, light change of pace. It was just a fun little piece of entertainment with an amusing main character who actually made me laugh out loud more than once. Pleasant to read something simple on occasion after all the serious and thoughtful things I normally choose.

Gertie gets into the groove

Terrific start! Gertrude is a spunky, outspoken senior who finds herself looking into the death of a neighbour. Can she solve the mystery and bring peace to a broken family? Her foil is a senior who finds himself helping against his will. The banter is tremendous and I love the fact that they are willing to go the extra mile. For anyone who loves cozy mysteries with strong characters and humour.

Introducing Gertrude, Gumshoe was a good read by Robin Merrill. Gertrude’s neighbor goes missing and she can’t help but to get involved. Many people are trying to get her to not get involved but she needs to help find her neighbor. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. I really enjoyed reading about Gertrude’s quirkiness. I can’t wait to read more of Gertrude’s story.

The search for Gertrude's missing cat leads to a murdered waitress, a strip club, a blackmail plot and an investigation that will keep you laughing right through to the last page.
I loved the irrepressible Gertrude and her crew of chauffeur/sidekicks and hope to see a whole lot more of her in future adventures.
If you're a fan of cozy mysteries featuring long in the tooth local busybodies turned super sleuth, you will love Gertrude as much as I did.

This was an extremely entertaining and fun book! I thoroughly enjoyed it and read it in one sitting. Gertrude and her neighbor Calvin are irresistible characters. Who can resist a mature women who takes it on herself to solve a murder which involves visiting a strip club several times. The image in my mind of this is absolutely hilarious. The (non) relationship of Gertrude and Calvin is enticing as well. I look forward to reading more of this series.

Gertrude goes looking for her missing cat and finds it but someone else is missing. The self appointed "gumshoe" decides to help. This is an older woman who uses a walker but still thinks she will do better than police to solve the case. Will she really? You can find out. She even finds a helper. I received this book free on my kindle several months ago and just now read it. It's ok if I laugh at Gertrude since I am also an old lady (minus a walker).

A spunky older woman attempts to solve a murder, and winds up involving her next door neighbor. Along the way, she is introduced to the world of illicit activity.
I enjoyed the book because Gertrude was an in-your-face little old lady with a lot of determination to get things done no matter the obstacles. She involves her neighbor, Calvin Crow, and they seemed to get into and out of trouble “by the skin of their teeth.”
