Bear country expert Tim Rubbert is back with more “lessons learned” about how to hike and camp safely where bears live. Drawing on his numerous observations of grizzly bears in Glacier and Yellowstone national parks and in Canada and Alaska, Rubbert details how to avoid close encounters on the trail and in camp. But if you do meet a bear, Rubbert has crucial, real-life advice—and actual encounter photographs— for making that moment safe for you and the bear. This is the bear-advice book written by someone who has actually hiked thousands of miles in grizzly country and safely encountered dozens of bears.
Hiking Safely in Grizzly Country is well laid out and informative. The main thesis is that if a hiker makes more noise, and carries and knows how to deploy bear spray fewer negative encounters between people and bears will happen. Tim Rubbert does an excellent job through his narratives of his experiences proving his thesis in fact. I found this not only to be an informative read but also an enjoyable one as well, full of adventure and a spirit of appreciation for grizzly bears. I would recommend this book to people interested in nature, people planning on hiking in bear country, and people who like reading real-life stories written by those who lived them.
