Having read several of this author's other series I was a little surprised about the beginning of this book, there was a lot of "tell" vs. "show" and the first chapter felt a bit more like a prologue setting up the rest of the story. However, once past that point this was a fantastic read. Unassuming college guy unaware of his appeal towards the opposite sex is somewhat blindsided but the interest that is all of a sudden being thrown in his direction. What I really liked is that, so far, he is never one of those obnoxious hot guys. Eric is super considerate and even thoughtful, especially when you consider he is a college guy. This story might be better categorized as open relationship or playing the field instead of your traditional harem preconception, I don't know if that will change in future stories. Eric is a smart, down to earth, thoughtful, considerate protagonist that we feel a little sorry for in the beginning of the book. As the story proceeds we see that he has goals and ambitions and I hope those are carried through future story lines. Eric is a well developed character with a good solid backstory. I was surprised and please to see how well the female interests were developed as well, they weren't just presented as brainless sorority girls looking to hook up. Each lady had an individual personality that we got to know thanks to Eric being a thoughtful and insightful kind of guy. This was a great lazy Sunday read.

Modern day contemporary drama. It's about a sort of down on his luck guy that used to be into music, was charming and talented, but when life hit him hard he sort of withdrew into himself and study with the aim for a well paying desk job. Then a friend of his invites him to hang out with some wealthy friends, and he starts developing interesting, in somewhat complicated relationships with a number of them. Along the way, he starts to pick up music again.

So basically, a charismatic outsider with a sad back story gets back into the groove of things. I might even call it slice of life.

No magic/litrpg/fantasy elements.

Just couldn't hold my attention

The story was OK but I was very easily distracted. In the beginning, I liked the characters but as the book progressed, I just wanted to smack them.

I've read a few of MSE's books and this one is not much different, The story had no depth and the main characters are shallow/vain. The main character spends too much time noticing fashion and food.

Hmm, not really my kind of story. I mean, it's nice, and it wasn't a bad story, I'm just not interested in seeing a guy bounce from girl to girl, just because he's too insecure to pick one and just stay with her. The grass isn't always greener, and as soon as you stop being a teenager, and man up, you might figure that out my man. Of course, he is still a teen, and he does still qualify as inexperienced, and so what if his best friend is already dating the girl he goes out with on a not date Can it get any more rediculous? Then, you throw in the girl's sister, the volley ball players, (yes, I said players, ploral), and you've got all the makings of a sex starved teen with nothing better to do than spread himself as thin as possible, pleasing everyone he runs into and not feeling the least bit about any of it (beyond the occasional twinge of the conscience). Way to go man, this is what jerks are made of.
So, while our jerk in the making is busy sleeping with everyone, and diving in head first into the rich side of town, (after being slapped down by one girl because he isn't rich), driving quarter million dollar cars that belong to 16-year old girls only with their sister, and still not feeling it, I can't say this story was anything useful. No plot line, except bang everything in sight, and come back for more, if there was a story here, I never found it. The whole thing was supposed to be about a guy who was supposedly an ace at the guitar, and he didn't even play one for the entire length of the book. (how's that work?)
No my friends, if you're looking for a real story with some meat on the bones, give this one a pass, but on the other hand, if you're trying to find something with no story other than supporting material for how to be a jerk, here's your handbook, have at it.
The story (at first) appeared like it was going to be a good one, but once it descended into the whole girl scene, it should have given up the ghost, because nothing useful happened after that point. Until then, it was a story about a guy trying to make things work, trying to get through school, and struggling to deal with tragedy, but after that, it was nothing more than useless nonsense. Cut off the second half of the book, slap a suitable ending on it, and you'd have a pretty decent story, which is the only reason this one got 3 stars, but you could just as easily write a whole new first half, and just leave the whole thing as an exercise in frustration, because there'd be nothing useful to read, the story died, because it seems the author started out to tell one story, and got sidetracked, then went on telling an entirely different one.
If that's your type of thing, then you'll probably enjoy this book, but if you're actually looking for a meaningful story, you don't need to look here, there isn't one.

Rockstar?

I'm not sure where the title of this book comes from! So Eric has a guitar and is a classically trained musician but the only music he plays is on a piano. If the sex scenes had ninety per cent cut out it would still be more than enough. Of course the book would only be about half its size! I mean there was really no story. I know that MSE has a penchant for harems and multi partner sex but this was over the top. Still, there are probably people out there who would like this but I can't give it more than three stars!

A really interesting one, this is an outlier compared to what I usually can find, this is a semi-harem story that is not sci-fi or fantasy, its just a contemporary romance novel but its execution is done quite well. What really sells this series is that the love interest actually have a great amount of depth and that everything isn't as clear cut as one would presume it to be.

Not much rocking

This story was not exactly what I was expecting in a rockstar romance. In fact there was very little about music or rockstars . It was however interesting.

I have read some other works by this author, and all have been entertaining escapist literature. I was really prepared to hate this book and expected to crap all over my review of it. However, I found the story easy to follow and engaging, with an interesting cast of characters.

Interesting romance from a man's perspective. I would call this erotic fantasy with very graphic sex scenes in this book. Other than some lesbian sex and a menage de trois, sex in this book is fairly vanilla. The first sex scenes are pretty good, and I understand that there needs to be more positive portrayals of safe-sex, but in erotic fantasy it irritates me.

About my only real complaint is that there is a lot of telling, rather than showing. I am wondering if this is some of the author's earlier work, as I have read some of his other material, and it is much better.

I will read the rest of the series to see where the story goes. Not very realistic, but entertaining.

2 very unlikable characters. Sometimes that can be OK, not everyone is likable and I dont mind reading stories about them. 2 of the characters were unlikable in a way that boggled the mind. The route of the problem is MC has the hots for his best friends girlfriend and so does she. OK that happens in romance book but other than them both being attractive I do not see why the like each other. Not only that I dont know why Amy is still with Jack, she has expressed little interest in him and all the while she actively pursues his best friend. It seems that their attraction is based on the pain they will cause Jack.
The MC also has a bunch of other girls available to him and is in an open relationship with them making his lust for Amy even more silly. He also has a girl he actually likes named kelly.

I give this a 2 star and not a one star because I think it realistically portrays what a harem would look like without game stats and aliens attacking and other crazy stuff this author and others who write in the litrpg niche.
The type of people who would be in a harem are horny and/or selfish. That means some will want a real relationships some dont care and some are already dating someone but don't care.

I liked they scene where one girl just strait up told him, this is only friends with benefits and she wont consider him seriously because he is not jewish like herself or rich; she wants to maintain her standard of living. Its honest. He gets angry and then gets over it.

There are 3 more books already out, I dont know how he can continue being a jerk to his best friend for that long so I hope its resolved quickly. Plenty of romance novels pull it off though(not ones i personally like). Once the betrayal issue is out of the way I can see myself enjoying the relationship drama more, his issue between him and his love interests is one thing, screwing over his bestfriend is not something I can enjoy reading.

Good Work

I’m a huge MSE fan, and picked this up as I hadn’t read it yet. The characters, writing, editing, and character interaction (yeah, all of it) is quite well done, and easily as good as his other books.

“But” you all say, and I nod and say “but...”

It is a good romance, and a good cautionary tale as well, as we watch the protagonist hit a slippery slope, wondering where he’ll end up. It’s not a joyous or even funny read — there’s little humor in the story — and there’s a really good reason for that. Also missing is a visible plot, because it’s done as a rambling narrative, so you really don’t know where you’re going. If Eric makes the obvious bad choices, I’m not sure I really want to be where he’s going, because those scenes and results are never pretty.

Ultimately I have to say that it’s probably not for me. I can give it the nod for craftsmanship, but I much prefer his other work.

Audible Read/Listen. (Possible spoiler)

I'm not convinced that a female reader would be interested in this book. The main character is a chick magnet and none of the interactions have any real romance. This is a book about a YA playboy and girls that want to f**k him.

I admit, I didn't take this book seriously, but as a guy, it was fun to listen to.

Plot: Not too deep, light.
Character: Book was too short. Only the main character was developed sufficiently.

This is a book that you read (or listen to) when you want something light, fun, and even smexy. There was a lot of smex. A similar series is Mia Clark's Stepbrother with Benefits (on Audible). That series you can't take seriously, but as a distraction it was fun to listen to.

I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I like to add some fun to my reading reportage.

😲😳🤯😱 yeap, I was not expecting that at all and it's my fault. I mean, next time I will make sure not to assume all that fantasy genre to means epic or urban fantasy. Kept expecting to read how the protagonist got bewitched, cursed, or was turned into a male incubus or something that would explain how he became a lady magnet.

Long story short, there was no plot, action or suspense. Not my cup of tea.

i'll stick to the author's science friction books.

Steamy and sexy book.

Eric has just started college. Life seems to fall apart for him after his parents die. Yet his best friend pulls him back into life and out of his shell. Eric encounters a number of lustful women for his taking. He keeps trying to avoid one in particular, his best friends girlfriend. She won't take no for an answer.

One of my favorite books of all time

This is only a harem in the sense that the main character is very popular and lives the life that most people assume guitar players lead ( several girls interested in him). They aren't all like living in the same place or anything. The characters are very compelling, and I felt emotional attachment several times in this story.

It was a good read

It was a very good read even though it was just a normal kind of book that involved everyday life and sex. I'm used to the interaction from his litrpg novels and I'm glad the main character actually did not bang his Best Friend's Girl. So apparently the biggest siren of them all is going to be a more interesting challenge.

Eric is a young adult in college and is gradually getting over the loss of his parents and is finally noticing how much of a chic magnet he really is

I enjoyed this book very much and look forward to the rest of the series

I constantly found myself shaking my head over what Eric was doing while also being so engrossed in what was happening

Wow, this guy can write.

I can't believe the level of writing. This book has the flash of LA life, money, wealth, and sex. Man, I could put it down. Warning...lots of sex. Can't wait to get started on the next one. Keep it up Michael. I am a fan now.

First off the title of the book is misleading. This book is writen by a male author so you get more of the male pov. Lots of explicit sex with lots of different girls. I enjoyed this read. I look forward to reading the next book.
