About the author

Her writing focuses on contemporary social issues. She is a perceptive observer of the changing urban milieu and her writing closely examines the contemporary Bengali middle class. Crisis in human relationships and the changing values of the present era along with degeneration of the moral fibre of the society in the backdrop of globalisation and consumerism are depicted in her prose. Exploitations and sufferings of women regardless of their social or economic identities find a distinct voice in her writing. While she is famous for her writing on women's issues, she does not consider herself as a feminist. She took up many odd jobs in her early youth and finally joined the public service which she left in 2004 to become a fulltime writer. Her long career is reflected in many of her stories and novels.

Over the past two decades, Suchitra has written about 24 novels and a large number of short stories in different leading Bangla literary magazines. Some of her acclaimed novels are Kachher Manush (Close to Me), Dahan (The Burning), Kacher Dewal(The Wall Of Glass), Hemonter Pakhi(Bird of Autumn), Neel Ghurni, Aleek Shukh(Heavenly happiness), Gabhir Ashukh (A Grave Illness), Uro Megh(Flying Cloud), Chhera Taar, Alochhaya(Shadows Of Light), Anyo Basanto(Another Spring), Parabas, Palabar Path Nei, Aami Raikishori, Rangin Pritibi and Jalchhobi among others. Her novels and short stories have been translated into many Indian languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Oriya, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi and English. She also writes novels and short stories for children. Her novel Dahan was made into a movie by famous Bengali director, Rituparno Ghosh.

বুড়ো হয়ে গিয়েছি কিন্তু তাও মিতিন মাসি সিরিজের বইগুলো এখনো ভালো লাগে। গোয়েন্দা কাহিনী হিসেবে তেমন মারপ্যাঁচ নেই কিন্তু পড়ে খুব আরাম পাই।

পুরোনো শারদীয়া আনন্দমেলা ১৪২১ থেকে পড়লাম। বেশ লাগলো। দশ বছর আগে হয়তো পড়েছিলাম একবার। তাই এবারে পড়তে গিয়ে আবছা আবছা স্মৃতিতে গল্পের প্লটটা চেনা চেনা ঠেকছিল। মানুষের মস্তিষ্ক আশ্চর্যজনক একটা জিনিস। আর সেই মস্তিষ্কের আশ্চর্য ক্রিয়াকলাপ নিয়েই এই উপন্যাসের প্লটের শুরুয়াত।

টুপুরের ক্লাসফ্রেন্ড শালিনী হঠাৎ তার ছোটদাদুর আগমনের দিন থেকে ভয়ানক একটা স্বপ্ন রোজ দেখতে শুরু করে। শালিনীর পরিবার জৈন মারোয়ারি। জগতশেঠের বংশধর! সেই স্বপ্নের উৎস সন্ধান আর গুপ্তধন হান্টিংয়ের একটা মাইল্ড ডোজের রহস্য-কাহিনি।

খুবই সাদামাটা রহস্য কাহিনি। অ্যাডভেঞ্চার-মূলক নয় সবটাই হু-ডান-ইট বা হোয়্যার-ইজ-ইট গোত্রের। হালকা মেজাজের লেখায় শৈশবের স্মৃতি রোমন্থন করা গেল।

Tupur with her aunt Mitin Mashi return to unravel the mystery of dream and to find the apparently vanished idol in the ancestral family of Jain Successors belonging to the famous businessman Jagat Seth. But may be too much background research was already available beforehand and so very little sleuth work was done in this story. Mitinmashi has always been my favourite bengali sleuth among many famous others. The joy here is not in the Sleuth work but the way in which Mitin mashi approach each case along with Tupur.

সুচিত্রা ভট্টাচার্য লেখিকা চমৎকার। তার প্রায় প্রতিটা বইয়েই কেবল কল্পনার জটিল বুনন থাকে না, থাকে গুঢ় রসিকতা, অল্প বিস্তর স্থান কাল পাত্রের পটভূমি আর সর্বপরি মগভীর (মধ্যম মানের গভীর) ইতিহাসের প্রেক্ষাপট। এককথায়, তিনি গবেষনা করেই লেখেন। তাই, তার ছোট পটে সাজানো গল্পের প্লটগুলো বেশ উপভোগ্য। এই বই পড়ে সেটা পুনরায় প্রমানিত হল। বড় কোন জটিল বই শেষ করে নির্দ্বিধায় মনযোগ হাল্কা করে নিতে তাই মিতিন মাসির বইয়ের জুড়ি কমই।
