Historian of Tudor England. Studied under S. T. Bindoff. He taught at the universities of Liverpool and Birmingham and wrote on faction at the Tudor court, Anne Boleyn and Lady Jane Grey.

An account of Anne Boleyn's life that leaves no stone unturned.From her family background to her death on Tower Green many complex details and not so complex details emerge from this fascinating bio.I think what struck me the most is the very compelling account of her arrest,imprisonment and trial.Also,the research on her accomplishments and duties as queen,the factions of the court and Henry VIII's admission ten years after her execution.Mr.Ives constructs a brave,charming,intelligent, and tragic Anne Boleyn.

Beware this book is phone book sized--simply mammoth. Though I appreciate his thoroughness on the subject, there are times I disagreed completely with his ideas on Henry VIII's or Anne Boleyn's motives.

The author tends to get bogged down on too many details in certain areas and not enough in others. His language is confusing at times and it almost feels the author is trying to impress his readers with his extensive vocabulary. In terms of using this book for research as an author, I found other resources much easier to understand. I had to use a dictionary and thesaurus to decipher some of what he was trying to convey, and that's ridiculous on seeing how I have been studying this period off on and for years. I have read dozens of books on Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII and I find his book one of the more laborious to get through.

That being said, I do love one portion in particular I was not able to find in as much detail in other books. On page 117 there is a choice retelling of Anne's return to court in 1528 and her exuberant reuniting with Henry. It made my heart sore to hear how elated they were to see each other once again.

All in all, a good resource to have, but not something I want to read often because of complicated way the author presents the material.

So I wasn't a fan of this book....I BARELY finished it.What I didn't like was the way that it was like fact after fact thrown at you.I know this was a biography but still it wasn't that great..I just wasn't a fan..Sorry

Whew! Scholarly indeed but tough to read. Ives assumes the reader already knows a lot of detail about the period and offers more with Anne as the focus. For true followers of Anne Boleyn only!

A great read full of historical facts that answer many questions yet raises many more.

This book is the one to read and the one by which all standards are made in comparison. Quite frankly, it is the best book written on this subject.
