It’s Wonder against Wonder with the fate of Earth-2 in the balance. The world is barely holding on by its fingertips. Do they dare risk an attempt to reboot their planet with the mysterious Amazonian device? Meanwhile, a new enemy is on the move behind the scenes, attempting to take advantage of situation.
A debate rages between the Wonders over using Fury’s Pandora Casket to recreate the old world and it’s people. But the point may be moot when the Humanites attack with the intention of stealing the casket!
An nice balance is struck between the emotional debate and unexpected action this issue. The Humanite kids are much more powerful than you would think as they storm the tower. They take down Captain Steel in moments and really press everyone to the wall with their powers - and that’s just a few of them! There are more waiting outside. These kids are ruthless and obey every word from the Ultrahumanite - pretty scary concept!
The issue goes from zero to sixty in the turn of a page, shocking the reader as much as the characters. Really amps up the intensity and keeps you moving through the story frantically.
That’s all offset by a really nicely emotional scene between Fury and Richard Grayson. They have a discussion on how hard it is to live up to the legacy of the icons before them. They share a lot and Fury is amazingly supportive and understanding here. We’ve only seen her as pretty hot-headed and antagonistic before. You really feel for Grayson here too, since he’s using the suit to combat the sense of loss over his wife and son. It’s not working out too well for him. But a great scene nonetheless!
Dallocchio’s art remains top-notch this issue. From great splash pages to intense action panels, energy and excitement flow through the whole issue. If I had any complaint it might be that there was some detail lacking in his facial expression this time around, but he still manages to convey emotion well.
Now things are starting to hit their stride! This story is really starting to move!
