This is one of those books that looks good on the outside but not as tasty on the inside. Going into this I thought the premise sounded great--a woman married on paper to a famous actor and planning their agreed upon 'divorce' only to finally meet his parents and end up falling for his brother. It sounded just like the potentially angsty but ultimately beautiful love stories I've come to love. The synopsis even had me thinking of 'Meant To Be' by Terri Osburn, another taboo love story that blew me away. Unfortunately this book didn't come close.
I've been trying to figure out why it didn't work for me. I finally concluded that it was LACKING. Lacking in heart, angst, addictive quality... The tone itself fell flat. There were also a few tandem sub-plots that didn't impress me but instead felt like they were taking away from the story. The chemistry between the two main characters involved in this taboo love was not as strong as it should have been. Even the love scenes were dispassionate.
I guess we can't love everything we read but I do encourage anyone interested in this book or series to give it a go. We all have different tastes and I'd hate for one negative review to dispel anyone from a potentially enjoyable read for them. This book is part of a series but each could be read as a standalone.
★★★½✩ (This is a review of the audiobook.) Tanya Eby does a nice job narrating this one. Some of her voices sound the same, but I could still tell who was who.
I was slightly disappointed in this one. I don't particularly like the “brother vs brother” theme in Romance, but this was a little different, as the husband is gay and the heroine knows it when she agrees to marry him. I wanted to see how Ms. Bybee handled it - and she does a great job. However, there wasn't all that much romance or interaction between the H/h, and time was spent on another storyline. I don't really mind that, but, as I say, I wanted to see how CB handled the primary story.
Still, I'm loving the whole Weekday Brides series and will continue.
3.5* not rounded up because of the (in my opinion) cheating
Karen has made it to one year of her Alliance arranged marriage to superstar Michael. At the end she'll receive a million dollar settlement that'll allow her to open a home for runaways. At her anniversary party however her husband's brother appears.
Zach goes to his brother on behalf of his family who all miss Michael. Checking on his brother's marriage is another part of his visit. Karen isn't the fake or perfect Hollywood type wife he expected and before Zach knows what hit him he's falling for his brother's wife.
To me this was the best of this series so far, well written with a plot that was interesting and flowed well I didn't skim a word and enjoyed it from beginning to end. With that being said I had some major issues with aspects of the story.
When Zach initially visited his brother the sparks flew between him and Karen and they almost kissed. At that time not only was Karen married but Zach had a girlfriend! He broke up with Tracey after he went back home and realized he couldn't stop looking at or thinking of Karen but he not only almost physically cheated he emotionally cheated as well. Then to compound matters, he had sex with Karen while he was single but she was still married to his brother! And he thought they'd been intimate! Wouldn't that have been his first question? I honestly was a bit grossed out. Had the sexy times occurred after Mike had filed for divorce or at least Zach knew the details of the marriage it would've been more acceptable to me but he didn't. It just made their relationship start off on a sleazy note #messymessymessy
Karen had a terrible incident occurred in her childhood that propels her to help troubled teens. Michael is her best friend but she couldn't quite hold off on her attraction to Zach. Though she did tell Mike that she was attracted to his brother and they had set a time to divorce it doesn't change the fact that when she and Zach had sex she was still a married woman! Nevertheless I liked Karen and her bleeding heart.
Their ily I didn't 100% believe because as although they'd been attracted to each other from the beginning they actually didn't spend much time together as a couple.
Good secondary characters with the set up for the next book and return visits from the previous couples though at then end I STILL wasn't sure I actually liked Zach's father.
I'm also a bit surprised that Mike wasn't out. Hiding his sexuality felt a bit weird especially as he did hook up with his old friend while he was still married.
The ending was rushed especially with their arrest and such.
Even with all my issues I liked the one though I'm still a bit irked at the cheating. Nevertheless moving on to the next.
*H/h didn't cheat on each other *Miscarriage to a secondary character *Abuse of a teen *Teen pregnancy
In order to make money so she can someday open a home for teen runaways, Karen Jones enters into a marriage of convenience with Michael Wolfe. Michael is a closeted Hollywood actor who doesn't want rumors to ruin his leading man status. Now celebrating a year of marriage, Karen and Michael are surprised when his brother Zach Gardner crashes their anniversary party. Zach tells Michael that his family is upset. Michael's been married for a year and they still haven't met his wife. They are wondering if she was even real. Michael promises that he and Karen will visit the family in the near future. Karen knows she will have to call on her acting skills to play the happily married wife around Michael's family. She'll also have to pretend she doesn't find her brother-in-law extremely sexy.
This is the fourth book in the Weekday Brides series. As I said with the last book, this series just gets better and better. The characters in this book are well developed and feel like real people. I liked the pairing of Karen and Zach, and the fact that they felt guilt about the attraction they felt for each other. I loved Michael and Zach's family and hope to see more of them in future books. My rating: 5 Stars.
I really enjoyed this story. As someone who's read the previous Weekday Brides series books, I was wondering how Catherine Bybee was going to give Karen her happily ever after...considering she had just entered into a marriage of convenience at the end of FIANCE BY FRIDAY. But she crafted a wonderful story the had me riveted until the very last page.
Karen and Michael had a beautiful relationship, despite the ruse they were putting on. Every time they were together, you knew the two of them truly loved each other. Granted, it was in a best friends kind of way, but the feelings were there and had me hoping against hope they would remain that way when their "paper only" marriage ended. I loved how they were so honest with each other and would tell each other when they needed to be with someone else.
Then there was Zach. Zach is Michael's older brother, who is sent to LA to find out why Michael has avoided his family for so long and if the marriage they keep hearing about is real. The moment he sees Karen, he's captivated by her. He fights the good fight against the attraction. Runs home when it gets to be too much and then stays away from her when she and Michael make it back to Utah. But the attraction to Karen isn't the only struggle Zach has. It's also being stuck in their small hometown in Utah. You could tell that Zach longed for more. Not only a woman to truly love, but to find some kind of work that would have meaning. Given those desires, it was no wonder that he would be perfect for Karen.
There are plenty of side characters in this book and we get to meet who I hope is our next couple, Judy and Rick. But this wouldn't be a Weekday Bride book without a bit of suspense and we get that when Karen tries to rescues a teen she runs across in Utah. That ends up bringing the cavalry into Utah to save the day.
I think this is my favorite of the series. I hated when I had to put it down, but when it was in my hands I didn't want it to end.
Wishing there were more days in the week, seven installments are never going to be enough.
Very pleasurable read with incredible characters and a unique storyline. I adored Karen; the author gave her all the characteristics of a lady - sophistication, courteousness, and respectability. She navigates the various worlds she inhabits with ease. The entire Gardner clan is astonishing, each character contributing equally to the story. Zach is an unusual protagonist – in the best ways.
These books are stand-alone but I recommend them all.
Disclosure: This book was provided to me free of charge for the sole purpose of an honest review. All thoughts, comments, and ratings are my own.
*ARC from NetGalley and Publisher in exchange for an honest review.*
I read this in one sitting. I loved the exploration of all sorts of love in this book. The loyalty and trust of a real friendship. The patience and hopefulness of familial love. And of course, the wonder and angst of romantic love. The characters were all complex, loving, patient (and exasperated), strong, soft and slightly dysfunctional. And that kept them ALL interesting and the story moving in a fast clip. I loved Karen’s sense of loyalty, sacrifice and tenacity. Loved the dialogue and the genuine emotion flowing from one character to the other. I want Michael for my best friend!
I am a little bummed that I did not get to explore Karen’s friends thoroughly in this book or previously…I need to hit the local bookstore for the Weekday Brides 1,2 & 3!
There is an old England Dan song that goes something like this, ‘how sad it is to belong to someone else when the right one comes along’. That song could be about Karen and Zach in Single by Saturday. Karen agreed to marry Hollywood heartthrob, Michael Wolfe, for one year, in name only, to help his career. Since they know the marriage will end, Michael never had Karen meet any of his family. That is, until his brother Zach shows up at their house. Karen’s immediate attraction to Zach has her heart singing and her brain in turmoil. Zach is also in upheaval, as he has fallen for his brother’s wife, and doesn’t know the full story of their marriage. When Michael and Karen go to his hometown for a visit, they have even more to worry about. Throw in an angry ex-girlfriend, a runaway pregnant teenager, paparazzi, a kidnapping charge, and you’ve got a fun and crazy romance that will keep you cheering for all three to find love in the end.
The Best One Yet in the Series I don't know if it's because I've come to know the various characters, or what, but "Single by Saturday" is definitely the best in the series so far. I was really afraid after the last book went astray (too many technical problems with the military aspects) that I might have to dump the series, but this one was terrific, picking up on Karen & Michael's story (which was the best part of the last book, I thought).
I rarely give romance novels 5-stars - but this is one I will definitely read over and over again. Obviously the main plot is a romance, but the sub-plots are intriguing and tie together beautifully.
Great backstory, witty dialogue, great characters, tough friendships, heated sexual tension - whew - I couldn't put it down. Highly recommend!
Are multe aspecte discutabile si cumva incriminate in mare parte in carte. Facand o medie ... 3 stelute.
3 stars. This book built on the story that started in the last book of this series, so definitely don't attempt this as a standalone. This series needs to be read in order.
This book was a hit and a miss for me. I liked the heroine a lot. Loved her even. I actually liked the sibling angle of this book, which made the story messy and added some angst. The heroine, Karen, married Michael a year ago as part of a marriage of convenience. Micheal is a famous actor, but he's also gay and in the closet. He thinks that he needs to marry a woman to keep up the facade of being straight. He expects he would lose movie roles and money if the truth of his sexual orientation got out. Karen steps in to be his fake wife for a year, during which time they become really good friends. Everything is going great, and they are planning their divorce, when Karen and Michael's brother, Zach, meet and have an instant connection and deep attraction that's hard to ignore
Karen and Zach fight their attraction, but unfortunately they don't fight it for long enough. Karen is technically married, and under a spotlight because of Michael's fame. Zach has a girlfriend, and there's a little bit of emotional cheating happening before he finally ends things with her. There's a lot of drama and I was very curious to see how the MCs would get to a HEA. Unfortunately, the ending fell a little flat for me. I felt like the author skimmed past the fall-out of their actions just a bit too quickly, which made the ending seem somewhat incomplete. Still a good book overall, but not my favorite of the series.
Safe with exceptions; no virgins, heroine has been celibate since before marrying Micheal, she is still married to him through essentially the entire book. Their marriage has always been in name only, nothing sexual ever. Micheal actually goes out and hooks up with someone during their marriage, which Karen had no problem with, so I really don't consider anything that Karen did as cheating. However, Zach has a girlfriend for about half of the book. He doesn't have sex with her after he meets Karen, and quickly realizes that he needs to break up with the g/f because his feelings aren't very strong. I still consider what he did to be emotional cheating. He spent a lot of time fantasizing about Karen - and really should have ended his relationship much earlier than he did. H&h do almost kiss at one point while Zach is still in a relationship, but nothing physically intimate happens before he is broken up from his g/f. I'm still a bit grossed out that Zach was willing to be with his brother's wife. Zach did not know that Karen and Mike weren't a real couple. There's OW drama from the g/f & OM drama (more like jealousy) caused by Karen and Micheal's marriage, no scenes with OM/OW.

I expected much better from this one, as I really liked the lead character, Karen, and her pretend husband, whose brother was to be the hero. And he also delivered. However in this case, the plot created more than one area of discontent. I really did not like it much to see several questions opened and never really dealt with later, even though they were legitimate and very important ones. First thing that strongly disturbed me, when Zach and Karen first have sex, Zach still had no clue their marriage had been paper only, all he knew was they intended to divorce; in his mind, Karen could have had sex with his brother just a few days earlier before their fall-out. Urggg, not so nice IMO. Then I did not understand how they handled the paparazzi who had photographed one of Hollywood star's wife right after she cuckolded him with his brother. It seemed that just announcing they would get a divorce and showing himself with a new starlet was enough to save him; that seemed easy. And the family also never seemed to really ask questions. So I liked the premises, I liked the characters but I really did not like the way their story unfolded.
There was a lot I liked about this book. The fake marriage, the forbidden romance, the kids the heroine was passionate about helping, and the family drama.
I loved both the MCs. I'm all about the instant connection, so when that's what happened with Karen and Zach, I knew I was going to love their story.
Karens character was extremely likable. She was nice and real. Her love for lost kids made her even more lovable. I loved her relationship with her fake husband and I loved the spark she had with his brother.
Zach's undeniable attraction to Karen was something I love to see from a hero. He didn't know the true reason she married his brother, so you get to see him battle with his morals about his attraction to her. Despite the tough situation they were in, I felt the author did a great job of still being able to bring us a romantic courtship between the two.
You also get the usual side characters from previous books. We also got Michael and Zach's family to meet and enjoy. I love the hints to their sisters upcoming book. I'm already intrigued by her and Rick's story. And on that note, I will start reading their book next.
Adorei ! Adorei ! Ainda choraminguei 😥
While I've never been the biggest fan of the falling-in-love-with-my-ex's-(or-boyfriend's)-brother-trope, I quite enjoyed Single by Saturday.
We know Karen and Michael from the previous books in this series and in this installment their fake marriage is about to come to its planned end when Karen is finally introduced to her husband's family. And immediately falls in love with them (figuratively), especially Michael's brother Zach (literally). You can imagine all the angst that comes with such a situation.
Karen as a character is a real girl boss. She's sassy, independent and has put it in her mind to help every teenager who needs help as best as she can. Which brings us to an important plot point: in Michael's hometown Karen tries to help some young adults who have found themselves in a rather difficult situation. (Trigger warning for domestic violence and teenage pregnancy)
However, while I quite enjoyed this story line, the relationship took the back burner because of it. Generally, it doesn't feel like a romance at least not with Zach as the love interest. Throughout the whole book it seems like we have more chapters from Michael's pov than we do from Zach's and therefore, I don't feel particularly connected to him. Which is especially sad since I love Karen so much but well, not every book can be a favorite.
I really loved Single by Saturday, it's a fun and enjoyable read.
Single by Saturday is the fourth book from the Weekday Brides series and it can be read as a standalone but I highly recommend you read them all as they are well written and very entertaining.
I loved all the characters, they will make you laugh and leave you with a heart full of happy feels.
Thank you Catherine Bybee for writing this lovely series, looking forward to Taken by Tuesday :)
Thank you to Netgalley and Montlake Romance for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Tema Fake Arrangement sebenarnya favorit saya, tetapi sayangnya novel ini gak menyuguhkan hal menarik ttg tema ini.
Di buku sebelumnya, "Fiance by Friday", Karen, teman akrab Gwen mau menikah palsu dgn Michael, aktor yg terkenal.
"Wajar" saja Michael diem-diem wae istrinya "berselingkuh" dgn abangnya, walaupun hubungan pernikahan mereka hanyalah platonik. Dgn kata lain, bullshit alias hil yg mustahal bakal terjadi.
Breve resumo.. É pecado cobiçar mulher do vizinho. Então....e a do irmão?
SINGLE BY SATURDAY is the fourth book in Catherine Bybee's Weekday Brides series and IMHO the best of them all. Which is saying a lot because I have loved every one of them.
This is the story of Karen Jones, who we met briefly in the very first book, Wife by Wednesday, as the director of the care home where Samantha's sister, Jordan was staying. She is also one of the Alliance clients Sam suggested to Blake when he needed a wife. Her role in each subsequent book has increased as her friendship (and eventually working relationship) with Sam, Eliza and Gwen has grown. When the gorgeous superstar action hero Michael (Gardner) Wolfe needed a wife of convenience to protect his status in Hollywood Gwen suggested Karen. She and Michael hit it off, easily came to a mutual understanding with temporary terms, were married, and became the best of friends while they waited until the agreed upon time for their friendly divorce.
I loved Michael! He was kind, thoughtful, caring and a wonderful husband to Karen in many ways. It was obvious in everything he did that he had come to love her very much... as a best friend, nearly as a sister. He treated her like a queen and helped her support the causes that were important to her. She in turn helped him with the Hollywood facade he wanted to present. The one of a successful actor with a beautiful and loving woman at his side supporting him.
Because they both understood their marriage was only temporary they chose not to involve others so no one would be hurt by their split. Including Michael's family. However, he comes from a large and close-knit family so this doesn't sit well with them. They send Michael's older brother, Zach, to investigate Karen and their marriage and then bring them back to Utah so they can all meet her. Unlike with Michael, Karen feels an immediate and overwhelming attraction to his brother, which he feels in return. And so the fun begins!! They all head back to Utah where we meet the rest of the delightful Gardner clan and, of course, they all love Karen. This brings on the guilt feelings for Michael and Karen knowing they will soon split. With the whole family in such tight quarters Zach and Karen are repeatedly thrown together and have to fight their attraction, but it's easy to see they are falling in love despite themselves.
As with all of Ms. Bybee's books, the characters in SbS feel real and down-to-earth, are distinct with well-developed personalities, will sometimes have you laughing out loud at their antics and banter, and other times will frustrate you as only someone you care about can. Because that is one of the things that make Bybee such a great writer, she makes you really care about her characters and their story. I find myself emotionally right in the middle of it all and hanging on every word to see how things could possibly work out for everyone. But she does it. Every. Single. Time. I won't even try to explain the wonder of how she works through her plots and subplots hooking you chapter by chapter with her typical wit, and just enough intrigue and danger to keep you guessing. But I will say I loved Michael, Karen, and Zach regardless of their crazy love triangle and was thrilled with the outcome and ending.
