La mia strada sei tu

Rate this book

It has been weeks since I first finished reading this book, and days sicne I finished it for the second time and still, I am trying to pull myself together and write the review that will make you see how much I love and appreciate this story.

I don't have the recipe for the perfect novel (if I did, I'd become a best-selling novelist myself, or any kind of novelist in that matter), but I do know what kind of ingredients I like in my books.
And guess what?
This book has all of them.

I will try not to go into too many details because I don't won't for this review to have a lenght of a novella, but I will try to explain what I liked in the best way that I know.

Fist, and the best part of this book is the writer's ability to describe the place in such a beautiful way.
Her writing style amazed me and the way she used words to express the beauty of Greece, landscape and all those little things that we see in our every-day life, was like she had the ability to transport us there, on those pages, or at least she awoked the desire of a reader to be there, in that story, and see the beauty for himself.

When Holly and Aiden were on the boat, looking at the stars, I wanted to be there with them, and see those stars with my own eyes, because I don't believe the stars were ever that beautiful as they were in that moment.

Second, Broom described the chemistry between the two characters in very realistic and yet very passionate way. The tension was almost touchable and those swoon-worthy scenes were, in some way, compelling.

Third, the characters were gray. And when I say, I mean they are as gray as they can be. They have many flaws, they make mistakes that they are aware of, they do feel guilty, they do get lost, but they also have dozens of good qualities and everything boiled together in one pot make them realistic.

In one particular scene, our main character finds herself judging and deprecating the other character, but then it hits her she did even worse thing and the guilt washes over her and stops her from saying anything.
That is just one scene, but the book is full of similar situations that show us the nature of characters.

Also (really not key attribute but to me, personally, pretty important) Aiden, one of the main characters and love interest in some way, has ginger hair, which is so rare in books I read that I welcomed that little component whole-heartedly.
I feel like women's fiction genre is full of dark macho men and every „diversity“ in that aspect I salute!

There's one more thing I have to stress out: My Map of You is full od secondary characters that I couldn't help but fall in love with (her boyfriend Rupert especially).

Fourth (and now we come to the hardest part of expressing my feelings), this book covers some really important issues, and one in particular that coused all the emotions to arouse and come over me.

I am not sure how much can I tell without spoiling the story, so I will say that this story doesn't follow only our main character, but also her deceased mother who's story we learn, in some parts from Holly herself, and in some parts together with Holly.

Fifth, the way the story is written is amusing. In third person focussing on Holly's POV, we follow chronological approach with with the glimpse of past, but we also get to read letters that were written by Holly's mother, aimed for Holly's aunt.

Overall, My Map of You is the best book I have read this year and I know I will be coming back to it many times in my life.
It is a realistic story presented in a beautiful way.
This book is an example of how a great novel should be done and, in my opinion, it wouldn't hurt for aspiring authors to check it out.

Stephen King once said that every good (or maybe great) book demands to be read twice: first time to satisfy your curiousity and to enjoy the story, and the second time to analyse everything and see what you missed the first time you read it.

Now, after finishing this book for the second time, I can give it nothing but pure five stars rating because it deserves all the stars (any when I say stars, I refer to those beautiful stars Holly and Aiden were looking at).

Note: I got a copy of this book via Netgalley in an exchange for an honest review. Thank you Penguin, Michael Joseph.

I read a lot of books.

I read a lot of books, from a lot of genres. I read books by male authors, and female authors. I read fiction, I read non-fiction. I read a lot of books. I very very rarely call a book 'perfect'. There's been The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough and A Woman of Substance by Barbara Taylor-Bradford - they were many many years ago. There's been The Vanishing Act of Esmee Lennox by Maggie O Farrell and A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. Each of those books are 'my' perfect books, for many reasons, but all personal.

I'm so happy to welcome another book to that special party; take your place My Map of You by Isabelle Broom,

I'll start with the beautiful cover. Blue sky, blue sea, a glimpse of the dazzling white buildings, the tree covered hills, the colourful flowers, in the the background, a faint, hardly noticeable hand-drawn map of Zakynthos. Evocative and inviting and draws the reader in without even having read a word.

There is absolutely no doubt that My Map of You has been written by an author who knows and loves Zakynthos. I too love the Ionian islands, I've visited them all, even the small ones that most people miss, and reading this book is almost as good as being there yourself. Isabelle Broom has perfectly captured the sights, the smells, the people of Zakynthos. She takes her readers to the small, traditional villages and also to loud, brash Laganas. The characters eat cheese pies and drink village wine whilst listening to the cicadas and locals arguing. They also experience the 'strip' at midnight; the neon lights, the goldfish bowl cocktails, the sunburn. For me, this makes the story so realistic, it would be wrong to think that Zakynthos is purely secluded tavernas and fresh fish, this well-balanced view gives the reader the opportunity to experience the whole Zakynthos experience.

Our lead character, Holly, is a troubled woman. Finding out that she's inherited a house on a Greek island that she knows nothing about, from an Aunt that she didn't know existed has been a shock. She's spent most of her life creating an invisible armour around herself, rarely allowing people to get too close .... in case she loses them. The death of her mother hit her hard, she looks back at their relationship that for the last few years centred around a Vodka bottle and an empty belly and struggles to feel any love or affection for the woman that used to be the funniest, most loving mum in the world.

I'm not going to go into depth about what happens to Holly on Zakynthos, that wouldn't be fair, and really everyone should buy the book and find out for themselves. However, I do want to say that Isabelle Broom's writing will transport every reader to the heart of this beautiful island. The reader will meet Greek people who are so wonderfully drawn that they become a part of life whilst reading the book. You'll be delighted by the descriptions of the island, the food and I can promise you that you will be Googling 'holidays to Greece' within minutes of finishing this heart-warming, beautifully written story.

I really try not to 'gush' when I write a review of a book, but My Map Of You landed in my hands at the perfect time for me. It made me able to put some huge, frightening changes in life to the back of my mind for a few hours, and it took me to one of my favourite places in the whole world.

Me? I fly to Corfu in a fortnight. Bring on the cheese pies, the Mythos and the sunshine! Yiamas!

5 stars to another gorgeous Greek ChickLit read!

I would like to thank the publishers Penguin Random House and the author Isabelle Broom for sending me a copy of My Map Of You in exchange for an honest review. I would also like to apologise for the late review, I'm sorry!

The story takes place both in London and on the Greek island of Zakynthos. From reading and exploring the settings of Zakynthos within the story, it looks and feels like the dream place not just to stay on a short break but to live there altogether. The descriptions made me feel like I was a tourist there spending time in the bars and chatting with the locals.

The main character Holly receives a letter stating that her aunt has passed away and in her legacy has left her house on the Greek island to Holly. Bewildered and confused, Holly leaves her boyfriend Robert and her domineering work boss behind to clean up her aunt's Greek home in preparation for selling it on. But what looked like an easy task turns quickly into discovering more about her aunt's past. Throughout My Map Of You, we uncover secrets that Holly learns that have been buried away from her for many years.

Without her boyfriend Robert, Holly meets the next-door neighbour to her aunt's house Aidan who shows her around Zakynthos and teaches her some Greek. But Holly isn't sure what she wants and on exploring through the novel, her decision whether to stay on the island or to sell and move on whatever happens will change her world forever.

There are plenty of laughs, joy and emotion to discover within My Map Of You. My recommendation for any readers interested in reading this novel would be to travel somewhere warm and read it. Perhaps on a beach or maybe in Greece itself?

I look forward to reading Isabelle's next novel A Year and a Day being released this coming November 2016.

Puf.

А тя авторката много точно си го е озаглавила "My Map of You".

I never heard about this book before i saw it in my library and thought that the cover looked like a perfect easy summer read.

It was a nice summer read and the first almost 150 pages where interesting enough that i thought it would be a great read... bad sadly after around 200 pages the book really started to get boring for me. I am not completely sure what it was but it just felt like the story dragged out endlessly, we constantly got the same information in just a little different way and the actual plot didn't really move along.

Its a good story, but for me it was a bit too slow moving, a bit too dramatic in some moments and bit too "i have sad moments!" book to be a great book or the perfect summer read.

All in all its worth a read if you don't mind a huge bucket full of family drama and boyfriend drama in a beautiful Greek setting with good writing.

Disclaimer: I received this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

You had me at ‘Greek island of Zakynthos’. The setting for this book, beautifully depicted on the cover, hooked me at once. What a perfect backdrop for romance.

I was expecting this novel to be a love affair with the island, and in some ways it is; but there is so much more on offer.

First, Holly’s love life. Strictly speaking, there should be no developing romance in the book, because Holly already has a boyfriend, the affable Rupert. But early on the author signals that their relationship is on a shaky footing, because Holly has become very adept at playing the part of good-little-girlfriend, rather than herself.

Enter Aidan, her next door neighbour on Zakynthos. It is easy to see why Holly is attracted to him, and not only because he is handsome, friendly and delightfully Irish: with Aidan, she is more herself than she has been for a long time; perhaps ever.

The romance story that unfolds has plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader turning the pages, and plenty of emotion. What I liked best about it was its realism; this isn’t a fairy tale, it is real life, and sometimes that is ugly and messy. The stark reality serves to heighten the moments of romantic connection, so that by the end of the book I was really rooting for Holly.

Alongside the romance, a second, and to my mind even more compelling, story unfolds, concerning Holly’s family. I was gripped by this aspect of the book, and profoundly moved in places. Poor Holly, who grew up so isolated and wounded by her mother, and has missed the chance to get to know her aunt in person. The island, however, offers her a new path, if only she can be brave enough to follow the clues to uncover the secret that tore her family apart.

That leads me to Holly’s personal journey through the book. This was the element with which I most identified. It is so easy to like Holly, and to wish her a brighter future beyond the shadow of her mother’s legacy. Over the course of the story, she warms up, as if the Zakynthos sun is infusing her with light and hope.

The denouement of the novel had me flying through the pages; it really is the perfect ending to the story, and an honest one. I closed the book satisfied and feeling each minute I’d spent in the reading was time well spent.

In all, this is a memorable debut novel with a good mix of poignancy and ‘feel-good’, and I look forward to reading more books by the author.

I didn’t so much fall in love with the characters in this story but the setting, the Greek island of Zakynthos (Zante). I just couldn’t help myself, by the end of the read I was texting my husband “We HAVE to go there”. It was described beautifully and I really felt as if I was right there, sipping cold drinks in the tavernas, queuing for the tour buses, relaxing on secluded sun soaked beaches. This really is a fantastic summer read, really putting you in the mood for that Mediterranean sun.

Holly arrives on the island after having been left a house there by an aunt who she has no memory of at all. It is the story of her journey to discover more about her aunt, Sandy, and specifically why Sandy and Holly’s mum Jenny were estranged with a huge dash of romance thrown in as well. There were parts of the story that were easy for me to work out but it was still a really enjoyable journey to follow. I knew what I wanted to happen, but there were times when it just didn’t seem likely at all, so it certainly is not as predictable as you may think. The romance element itself was particularly good to read with just the right amount of “will they, won’t they, should they, shouldn’t they” dilemmas, misunderstandings and spanners in the works to keep my interest going.

I did like Holly who is refreshingly normal; likeable but flawed and easy to align yourself with. In fact I have to say that there isn’t a single character in the book who I didn’t feel some affection for.

There were a few times when I thought the story was unfolding just a little too slowly but it was still a really lovely enjoyable read in a setting that worked its magic on me, the reader, in exactly the same way as it did on our heroine. It is a read that will certainly find its way into a few beach bags this year but one word of warning - if you are not going to Zakynthos, then this book may make you regret your holiday choice.

The story starts in London with main character Holly. She has a boyfriend called Rupert who she's not really being the real Holly around. Holly's life is about to change when her Aunt Sandra (Who she didn't really know) leaves her a house in Zakynthos, Greece.

Now in Greece Holly meets her next door neighbour Aidan. Holly is much more herself around him. I found much more chemistry between Aidan and Holly than Holly and Rupert. I wished for much of the book that Holly would be more true to herself. Holly does so much wrong but I still can't seem to side with Rupert. The secrets start to unravel about the past of Holly's relatives on the island. Including her mum Jenny and the identity of her father.

The story then goes forward two months between London and Greece. This part dragged too much for me. The book started strong and ended strong with my map of you, how I fell in love with you. I felt it dragged a little in-between. It took me longer to read than I thought it would.

I know some authors dislike their books being classed as Women's Fiction but it is a genre and it's one that I have read hundreds of books from over the years and so I like to think I know something special when I read it. My Map of You is without doubt one of the best books that I have ever read from this genre, and I want to say that it's the best I've ever read but I'm still in that euphoric state of happiness after finishing such a perfect book that I can't make that decision just yet. My Map of You will certainly be one of my Books of the Year come December and it is one that I will be recommending to anyone who will listen.

My favourite place in the whole world is Cyprus, and Zakynthos, where the majority of My Map of You takes place, isn't all that dissimilar to Cyprus and so it was already very easy for me to visualise this setting, but Isabelle Broom has written the perfect love letter to Zakynthos and I actually finished this book feeling like I had been on holiday there myself. Everything has just been captured so beautifully and effortlessly that the book was just a joy to read and as Holly, our main character, began to explore her new surroundings, so to did I. Greek culture is just my absolute favourite. From the warm welcome received by the locals to the delicious food and drink, to everything that there is to explore, it's just one of the best in the world. I am already salivating thinking of all the Greek food and drink I'll be devouring over in Cyprus very soon. There's just no better place on Earth and even though My Map of You isn't set in Cyprus, Zakynthos just sounds like paradise and I so want to visit. Just like there are parts of Cyprus for those who prefer to party and make an idiot of themselves, there are also similar places on the island of Zakynthos and Holly reluctantly gets to sample some of these delights for herself. But, luckily, most of the book does take place at the more beautiful parts of the island and this book really was just such a joy to read.

Holly has headed to Zakynthos alone, leaving her idiotic (or so I thought) boyfriend Rupert back at home. Holly has found out that an auntie she has never met has left her a house on Zakynthos and when she arrives at the house she soon discovers that there's so much about her family that she didn't know and she sets out to find out the truth about a secret that tore her family apart, with the help of her easy on the eye neighbour Aidan, who soon has Holly questioning everything that she left behind at home when she nervously stepped on the plane to Zakynthos. One of my favourite things about My Map of You was exploring the island with Holly with a map that she found that had places marked on that were special to her mum and auntie. Holly visits all of the places with the hope that she will find the answers that she so desperately wants and there are some incredibly bittersweet, emotional, and just really lovely moments as she attempts to do that, with the help of Aidan. I just completely fell in love with these two characters and their friendship and relationship as it progressed was so believable before the inevitable (and obvious) curveball was thrown in the way partway through the story. I annoyingly had to stop reading at a crucial point in the story and I spent the whole of the next day counting down the minutes until I could continue reading.

I think some people might take a while to really like Holly but I have to say that I liked her pretty much straightaway. I think it's because I found myself relating to her at times, not in how she didn't have any family, but more in the point that she was at in her life. And as she was a pretty closed off person at first, it was enjoyable to watch her start to come out of her shell and flourish on the island and discover who and what she really wanted to be. I've always found that it's easier to make big decisions (or feel like you can make them) and to feel like anything is possible when you are on holiday and in terms of character development from the start to finish of a novel, Holly's was probably one of my favourites that I've ever read. She does make some silly decisions at times, but this just helped me visualise her more as a real person, and also had me wanting to shout at my Kindle for her to make the right choices. She was just such a fantastic character to read about though and all through the book I wanted her to find that happiness that she craved. Even when she made some rather stupid decisions I didn't even judge her too much. But, I think that was pretty easy because of how silly I found some of the other characters.

I truly loved how maps played their role in Holly's discovery of the island. I found it easier to invest in the lives of the characters, and Holly and Aidan were so well drawn (and suited) that their story didn't even feel fictional at times. They felt like real people, and it was as if I was reading someone's real life story. I too felt a connection to Holly's auntie and mum because we read letters throughout the book which give away details about what led to them drifting apart. I did half work out what was going to be revealed about the sisters but the other half completely took me by surprise, and there are some really wonderful scenes as the book nears its conclusion (but not without plenty of drama beforehand!). The characters in this book, both the main and secondary, are so memorable that I'll remember them for a long time yet, and this is a book that I will read again and again, in fact, I already want to. The relationships and the friendships all just feel so natural, and this isn't one of those completely predictable reads because even though I had an idea in my head of where I wanted the story to go, I honestly thought Isabelle was going to take it somewhere else! I was so nervous reading the last parts of this book.

I always say this about books that I've loved but, especially recently with what's happened personally, reading is my escape. The reviews on my blog are now all mostly positive because they are only of books that I have read and enjoyed. I have a few hours each week to read books and I want to spend them reading books that I've enjoyed, not finishing a rubbish book and then reviewing it just so I look more like an authentic blogger (whatever one of those is). My blog is a place for me to tell people about books that I've loved, and I always hope that one of my reviews can help somebody choose their next book. My Hall of Fame was set up for those books that are that little bit more special than the rest, and if a book is in my Hall of Fame then you can be sure that I have truly loved it. My Map of You is a book that I honestly cannot recommend enough, it's rare to be able to describe a book as perfect, but, to me, that's what this book was. I just devoured it from start to finish, and never wanted it to end. Oh, and don't even get me started on that ending. Quite possibly one of my favourites that I've ever read in a book. I am fashionably late to the party with reading My Map of You and if you haven't read it yet, then I highly recommend that you do. I cannot wait to see what Isabelle writes next.

My Map Of You is about family secret and lie's, moving forward to forgiveness and learning to love the person that you are.
Holly, works for a London online clothing company writing out the descriptions for each item of clothing in their range. She is dating Rupert; who works in a corporate bank their relationship is fine. But Holly has found herself moulding herself into what she thinks will make him happy, suppressing her until she doesn't know who she is any more. Holly is also guilty of telling Rupert a few fib's about her family past which deeply affects her inside. She knows very little about her family which she has always felt disjointed by.
The Holly revives a letter from her aunt's solicitor abroad after her death telling her she has inherited her mothers sisters house in the Greek island of Zakynthos. Shocked at this unexpected gift from a woman she has no memory of, Holly leaves Rupert behind to work and travels over for a few weeks to sort the house out ready to sell. Holly doesn't know what to expect or if she will even get the answers to the questions she's been asking her whole life.
Holly soon starts to soak up the island and quickly begins to feel at home. She starts to find clues about her mother and Sandra. Her neighbour Aiden a handsome Irish man, who even though she finds him frustrating at times he helps her explore the beautiful island and she is keen to find out more about the lady who left her this gift. Holly slowly being herself in Aiden's company and enjoying their time together. She explore the island and the locals that new her aunt and her mother finding out small clue's in which she has to piece together. Will she get the answer's she's looking for? Why did her mother and aunt separate? What did her mother keep secret? Does Aiden know more than he is letting on? Will she be able to piece all the clues together? Will she go through with selling a house on and island that she has become to love?
Aiden has been a great help and they start to get closer. But how close? But then suddenly both her worlds are about to collide as Rupert suddenly turns up. How will she deal with that? How will Aiden react? Will Rupert continue to be the man in her life? Or has someone else brought out the best in her?
I found My Map Of You to be a truly wonderful story. Isabelle wrapped me up in her words like a cosy blanket. I was glued to Holly's journey as she try's to find out more about her mother and aunt's past. There are many twists and turns alone Holly's journey some of which doesn't always go smoothly, and this kept me turning the pages as fast as my eye's could read!!!!!! Isabelle's description in this book is out of this world, and totally made me feel I was right there in Zakynthos, tickling all my senses as I read. It goes without saying the plot and structure of this story is pretty perfect in my eye's which makes it a dam good read!!!!!! I highly recommend My Map Of You, it's defiantly a must read.

I had been mildly apprehensive when I saw this book was set in Zakynthos, due to having worked there for 3 months before being removed from my job. I had managed to avoid that particular island in real life and fiction since, but was looking forward to reading My Map of You. I'm so glad I put my fears behind me, as all this book did was bring back my better memories of my time on the island, including visiting some places that I had forgotten until I saw the place names in the book.

A lof of Holly's initial sight seeing struck such a chord with me, as I had also visited the sights of Zante and I laughed in recognitions of the description of Laganas, being exactly what I thought of the place. For those that don't know the island. Laganas is the main nightlife town, with all the night clubs, and Club 18-30 culture, with the hen and stag night crowd liking it too. Thankfully Holly didn't spend much time there, and neither had I.

Due to the memories and personal connection to the location, it is very hard for me to judge the book completely objectively. I loved the story, and of course the destination is stunning, and the descriptions of Zante were accurate.

I'm glad to see that the Caretta Caretta (Turtles) were mentioned quite a bit, due to Turtle Island, and that also the stray cat and dog problem was also touched upon, with Holly's next door neighbour in the village being a vet, as well as an incredibly handsome man.

The mannerisms of the Greek restaurant owners, PR people, and others working in tourist areas were so familiar to me, and probably of anyone who has visited Greece. Trying to teach someone the occasional word of Greek also rang true, and it didn't take too long for the 4 or 5 words of Greek I knew to come back to me reading this.

The story itself is one of self discovery for Holly, as she is left a house by an aunt she didn't know she had, and had suffered tragedy herself in her young life. She's in an unfulfilling relationship, and only takes the trip to the island in order to sell the house. She doesn't expect to experience the feelings of deja vu that she got, nor that she would want to know more about her aunt and mum.

At the end of each chapter, there is a message from one sister to the other, telling the basics of their relationship since the apparent relationship, which just led to my own curiosity as to what had torn them apart, and who was presumably to blame.

There was loads of keep me reading, not least my clear love of the island, and I thoroughly enjoyed every page of My Map of You. This is a very accomplished debut novel and I'm already looking forward to Isabelle Broom's next releases.

Thank you to Netgalley and Michael Joseph for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.

ME ENCANTA!
