I will be going through live hypnotherapy training with Marisa Peer (the author) next month so I decided to read her books to understand her process and prepare for the course. I got this one first so that I could gift it to loved ones who'd been struggling with weight, and I had no intention of using this book to get thin or change my eating habits. I just finished the book, and I haven't even started listening to the accompanying cd yet, but even though I didn't plan to use this book to lose weight and I didn't even do the exercises, my whole mindset about food has changed. I can't look at certain foods the same way again, and I already feel healthier and happier with the changes I have implemented. I find it wonderfully amazing that just reading this book with absolutely no intention of using it for its purpose had such a big impact on my habits of mind and action. Thank you Marisa Peer! I can't wait to share this book with my friends and family!

Loved the first half hated the second.
I am vegan, so the big meat promotion during the end wasn't really for me, obviously.
I also disagree with some of her logic, she rants about sugar (which I agree with) then writes something like "But you can still give your children sugar", so it's okay to raise another generation of addicts. I don't know.
I really connected with her during the beginning, I still hope that some of her statements and exercises work for me. However, it's harder to believe even the stuff I believed during the first part, as the second part was just really disagreeing with almost everything that I believe in.
And you don't have to be vegan to see some flaws in her logic.
I'm still going to listen to her audio, I haven't so far. I hope that the audio is much more neutral and not tapping into the "what to eat" area too much.
I usually like to re-read books that helped me in the past. At this point, I don't think I could ever re-read this one, as I had so many mixed feelings during the end.

In conclusion, I think that people can pull some benefits out of this. You learn a lot about emotional eating and how to work through that. She also gives some tips on how to beat cravings, which worked for me so far.
The nutrition part of the book is more for the people that buy into the Paleo/Low-Carb thing. Definitely wouldn't recommend it for Vegetarians or Vegans.

It had good reviews, so I listened to it, hoping of course that it would be good. Sadly though, I seem to be in a minority in disliking it. I just found her voice too .. patronising..?
Admittedly I have not read the book that this accompanies and which you're supposed to read first; and interestingly, the only other review that I have seen that is not 'rave' was by someone who also hadn't read the 'main' book...
So, I will up my rating to 2 and perhaps read the main book. I'll be delighted to come back and say how wrong I was and that it changed my life!........... :0

According to Goodreads description, two stars mean "it was ok". Which it was.
I can't say I actually liked the book because I disagreed at some points - some claims are certainly biased, and ocasionally contrary to what science has learned - but overall it gives you plenty of food for thought. Which is useful indeed.
The mind is so powerful, we better use it to our advantage and not against us!

I've just had the most delicious dinner.
I ate and enjoyed every bit.

If like me you used to rush down food to feel unsatisfied after eating a huge meal.
YOU NEED THIS BOOK.AND ONLY THIS BOOK.

It is truly not a diet book.it's more of a health book.it's not restrictive.I can eat what I want.but the major statement there is what 'I' want.

This is by far the best health book I've ever read.Marisa Peer helps you understand your own mind and body.to figure out why you are over weight in the first place. I find her subconscious suggestions refreshing (there's no preaching here) I've learned to think feeding my body and mind, not stuffing down half a packet of biscuits before dinner. This book has given me the empowerment that I lost in my teens. I haven't even listened to the accompanying cd yet. All I can say is 'thank you marisa

This book has amazed me I have been on various diets for many many years but I have always craved the foods that cause weight gain. When someone told me this book would allow me to lose weight without dieting I thought it would be a load of rubbish. However I cannot recommend it enough since reading this book I have not wanted to eat bread cheese crisps cakes biscuits in fact The thought of eating then makes me feel ill.
It is quite controversial and goes against a lot of what swimming groups tell you to do try it for yourself and see what you think.

Everyone needs to read it

It is a quick read. The title is a little shocking, but it really gets you into the mindset of wanting to change your eating habits by explaining the science behind every statement.
I have already started applying the info found in it and my mindset has already started shifting incredibly fast.
Thank you Marisa, you have no idea how much you've helped me and thousands of others.

Very helpful

I loved reading this book. Opened my eyes to the things I was doing wrong in my diet. I now know what I need to eat (and not eat) and why that is. I love knowing the “why”. I also love the science behind what I’m supposed to think and say about myself. I recommend this book to anyone who has struggled to lose weight and keep it off.

Growing up as an obese child in the 90s in India, I was always taken to 'dietitians' who would fat shame me, a child, for having 'no will power' and one of them even called my mother 'shameless' for letting her child eat bad things in large quantities. Most of them imposed their religious/cultural beliefs upon me, calling non-vegetarian food as 'bad' and making me consume copious amounts of dairy and wheat(without even analyzing and knowing that I am dairy intolerant). When told of my symptoms, I was called 'excuse maker' or 'attention seeker' As a result, my digestive system got fuc*ed up and my childhood traumatized.

According to Marisa Peer, 98% of diets fail and that's actually true. Dietitians/Nutritionists tell you what to eat and what not to eat(naughty foods), but NEVER TELL YOU HOW! In addition to this, 'famous dietitians' in India have an elite clientele that has maid/manservants in waiting, that make sure that 'baby'/'baba'/'Sir'/'Madam' get their healthy food shoved down their throats. It's just not doable for most everyday people.

This book is NOT a Diet book at all. This is a psychology book that is written in a hypnotic way. This helps you:
1) Go to the root cause of wrong eating patterns(viewing food as love/pampering, being big to feel significant, incidences growing up those incorrectly wired individuals to not eat as they were intended to, etc.). This is called 'regression'.
2) Change your beliefs about yourself/food and your relationship with food. Your a** is not the size of a barn, you are not starving or famished, a happy meal does not make an unhappy person happy, you don't eat 24*7, etc.
3) Creative visualization to think, feel and eat like a thin person
4) Changing the emotional connection/dependency on unhealthy foods.
5) The NEW YOU eats as infants do. Only eat enough and when you are really hungry.
6) Hypnotherapy audio to listen to for at least '21 days' to rewire your brain to eat your way to health and a lean you for life.

Sounds fabulous, but does it work? Yup, it did on me during 2017-2018. I reduced 25 kgs/55 lbs. Unfortunately, I stopped using this book+audio and it went down in a spiral for me.
Now, I've read this a second time and I'm already off sugar and midnight dessert.
This time, I'll treat this book like I treat my Bible. This MUST BE USED FOR LIFE, else it is easy to be rewired to eat like crazy again because we're surrounded by ideas/brainwashing about food that fill-up marketers', restaurants' and food companies' bank accounts, while slowly but surely digging our graves!

Powerful!
Reading Marisa's book really enables me to think, say and make choices in a way that supports me to drop harmful habits, reduce weight and feel safe in my body.
Her motto of "Restrict your eating instead of your living" has become my motto as well.
I like the way Marisa points out that we might have been hypnotized by the advertisers to believe that some foods are beneficial for our health, while in fact they can't be more detrimental and may be responsible for driving us to overeat. She then teaches us to self-hypnotize just like what various food advertisers have been doing, but for the good. I now don't eat any dairy products and seldom flour, and I am very happy about this choice.

Quite some thought provoking ideas like how weight loss is an unhelpful concept because we usually see loss as something negative. How we don’t want to be restricted by what we are eating, but we are restricted in our clothes, how we feel etc. it’s also normal to be restricted when you get married, start a new job or other things in life and we see them as a good thing! Most of us don’t abandon our spouses when things don’t work out, but we do it with our diets. Most people don’t reach the end of their lives and regret not having eaten more biscuits, they regret not having done more, seen more, spent more time with friends and family.
I couldn’t relate to everything she wrote, but I guess I won’t get Coca Cola = liquid osteoporosis out of my head for the nearest future! 😉

When reading this book about 10 years ago, I couldn't find the EU directive, referred to in the book. When reading it this time, I also find it a bit inconsistent regarding what to eat. Avoid additives and yet, eat soy yoghurt, which, does include additives that I don't want to eat. And canned pineapple, is that really healthy? When checking a can, apparently there is no added sugar, however 12% of the 15% carbohydrates comes from sugar so perhaps is it only the sweetness of the pineapple?

I do like the part of the book inspiring to change the way of thinking, which was also the reason I read the book again.

Life changer

I have read this book cover to cover, I have completed all the exercises, and in the process I have shed 6 pounds in one week. I have 5 stones to go, but have never felt more confident, that I will lose each and every ounce of unwanted fat without a great fight with myself. Here's to health. Thank you Marissa.

3.5/5 - I admit I'm super embarrassed to have read a "dieting" book, but I love Marisa Peer, who I was mainly introduced to through her appearances on various podcasts, and I thought this would be a great motivation tool to quit sugar. I did enjoy it - super practical advice, and it's more up to date with the science than I thought it would be (i.e. fat isn't necessarily so evil). Definitely a great tool to inspire better eating - my favourite parts were definitely the sections on visualization, which I'm interested to keep implementing into my own life.

I read this as part of my ongoing interest in food and nutrition (and I think it might have been attractively priced on Kindle). I found the book readible, I'm not sure about the validity of some assertions made and whist it does present a way of eating which undoubtedly supports maintaining a healthy weight, it makes food a functional thing, for me it's lacking the pleasure and enjoyment of it.

I am a fan of Marissa Peer and love all of her books, including this one! The book gave me a new, real perspective on the food that I eat, and has helped me make better choices. The words she uses to describe certain foods alone will want to make you stop eating them. Great exercises and insights throughout the book!
