From the Winner of the Scholastic Montegrappa Prize for New Children's Writing It's Halloween at Saint Smithen's. When the Brimwell town hall burns down, the amateur production of Macbeth is moved to the school and it's all hands on deck. But when the play is struck by a series of mysterious attacks, it's up to Poppy, her friends and her circus family to save the play and unmask the culprit.

I’m absolutely loving this series so far. It’s so much fun. Amazing characters, mysteries, humor, writing, & still loving the circus people element so much. I also loved the theatre element used for this mystery as well. Can’t go wrong with including Macbeth too lol. ALSO, it’s Halloween-time at the school, so that adds even more atmosphere & awesomeness. I fell more in love with Poppy with this one, as well as Ingrid & Kip. Such great kids, with the best friendship. They make the best little detective team. There’s a bomb dropped towards the end that had my jaw on the floor as well! Excited to see where THAT goes next lol This has everything, including an army of Guinea pigs lol. Highly recommend! Another BEAUTIFUL cover by Beatrice Bencivenni too.💜
Oh Poppy Pym! If anything I enjoyed this even more than the first one and I thought that would be impossible! Now firmly settled into Saint Smithens Poppy and her friends, Ingrid & Kip, are still on the lookout for a mystery to solve so when the town hall burns down when the drama society are rehearsing that Scottish play it's the perfect opportunity for the trio to put their detecting skills to the test once again...
Between invading hordes of guinea pigs, wannabe movie stars starring in a vampire movie and cast members dropping like flies thanks to the curse of that Scottish play Poppy is soon up to her neck in the investigation. This time they're trying to solve two mysteries at once so things are even more hectic than usual. Poppy's circus family are soon called upon to help and the arrival of Fanella, Luigi, Pym et al lives the story up even more.
Poppy is a little bit more grown up in this book and thanks to her archnemesis Annabelle Forthington-Smythe is starting to wonder about who her birth parents really might be. There are some really touching moments between her and Madame Pym about this and I look forward to reading more about her search if she decides to go ahead. Although, I do have to say that bombshell dropped on page 293 left me with my mouth hanging open and cursing the fact that the book was finished! I sincerely hope that Laura Wood is writing book 3 now as I'm not sure how I'm expected to wait too long after that...
As per the first book there some great supporting characters and I have to say Letty, Poppy's other roommate, is my favorite. The girl belongs to so many clubs I'd like to know when she finds time to sleep between them and school. Miss Baxter, Fanella, Luigi, Marvin and the other circus members and teachers are all equally as good - but especially Fanella who I think had some of the funniest lines, and the Brimwell Bugle agrees with me!
A good solid middle grade adventure about friendship, family and how to be a good detective, this is the sort of book I would have devoured at that age and indeed absolutely adored at my slightly more advanced age now...

A fun middle-grade adventure centred around a treasure hunt and The Scottish Play. I found the audiobook version slightly irritatingly bouncy, but since I listened to this before reading the first book I was missing a few details which made it hard to get into. Super for Y4 upwards.
Pesan moralnya bagus.

I can’t believe I had never heard of it before, especially since it has become a firm favourite of mine. The upside was that I didn’t have to wait at all between book one and book two!
Poppy is back, along with Ingrid and Kip, to investigate another mystery – or two! The Brimwell Players’ rendition of the infamous play, Macbeth, is under threat as more and more mysterious accidents keep happening, but Poppy and friends suspect foul play and begin investigating. Meanwhile, they unearth a secret in the school’s past that could lead to an exciting discovery!
There’s always a worry that the second book in a series isn’t going to live up to the first book, and I always love it when a book throws that worry out the window. Poppy Pym is a great read for a reason: Poppy is fun, energetic, chaotic, and a brilliant detective! She’s everything kids love and her stories are alive with characters that are lovably eccentric.
One of the fantastic things about this book was being introduced to more of the world that surrounds Saint Smithens. The town of Brimwell was full of bubbly characters that were a welcome addition to the pages. I particularly loved the cat-crazy Miss Farthing! Girl after my own heart, that one. The Brimwell Players were all brilliant, and I particularly loved that they were all amateur actors – well, except for Lucas Quest.
Ahh, Lucas Quest. Gosh, he was brilliant. I loved that whole plot. The not so subtle nod to the Twilight-esque obsession with young actors who play vampires was hilarious.
Another great thing about this second book was that it involved several different story lines all weaving together to create the double mystery that’s prevalent this time around. The mystery of the curses befalling the Macbeth performance, and of course the secret hidden deep in the school’s history. Then there was also Poppy’s struggles with Parents’ Weekend and not knowing who her real parents actually were. I loved this in particular, I’ve been very curious as to whether her parents would ever turn up or not.
And I have to say, that ending was perfect. So tantalising for the next book and yet still satisfying for this one. Now I just need to wait a year or so to read more! A fantastic mystery series for young detectives, Poppy Pym is not an adventure you want to miss out on!
I loved the first Poppy Pym book so I had high hopes for this and it didn't disappoint! Funny and exciting, it's the perfect choice for any young reader aged 8-12ish, but also great for us older readers who like a bit of nostalgia. I think I enjoyed it even more than the first (which is saying a lot), and that ending....what a cliffhanger! Already looking forward to book 3.
