”It took me too long to figure out she’s exactly what I want.”
This story starts off with a choppy beginning, as the author brings a reader up-to-date on what happened in the prior book. It seems that the heroine Sydney Fairlane and the hero Heath (Heath was in a love triangle in the first book for Kacey. Please note that I didn't read the first book so the presentation of the facts was a bit confusing.) had started sleeping together and to this heroine, Sydney it was the beginning of something very special. The announcement of Heath’s engagement to Kacey not only embarrassed put hurt Sydney and had her questioning herself. The outcome of book one left Heath without the girl he proposed to, even if they had their reasons for deciding that getting married was a good idea. In this book, Heath realizes that he had the beginning of something amazing with Sydney and wants a second chance.
”I messed up,” he murmurs. My eyes close and I hug myself. He messed up. My anger cools, disbelief replacing it. “You were going to marry her,” I whisper. “it was complicated,” he argues.”
Heath’s grovel for a second chance with Sydney was well done as was his twisted reasons for proposing to Kacey. Though the hero was late to catch on that Sydney was the girl for him in the prior book and not just some hook up. Heath's road to forgiveness and trust is a bumpy one…
”That may be the thing that is holding me back from Heath Mackey most of all. Before him, I thought I was great. I thought any guy would be lucky to have me. He took that away from me.”
When an accident occurs, Sydney sees yet another side to this sexy man who broke her heart as he takes care of her and protects her. This couple was terrific together. Sydney was a fantastic heroine to root for. She was just the right amount of feisty while written with the level of sensitivity and inner thoughts that were very relatable to any woman. Heath slowly shows Sydney all the sides of him and lets her into his life and the heartbreaking situation of his dying mother.
”He’s a contradiction. He left me but he’s staying by my side. It’s confusing. Which side of him do I believe, the one that looked past me, or the one that’s watching over me?”
While Heath helps Sydney recover and they form a solid relationship parts of the story including Heath’s mother was just heartbreaking while others like Sydney’s shallow friends, the couple from the prior book, and of course Sydney’s awesome grandmother, all added just the right amount of extra drama to the story. I truly enjoyed this book and am interested in trying other books by this author out in the future. Please let me know what other books I should one click and try because this maybe the beginning of a beautiful relationship between the author’s stories and myself!

3.5 stars. I liked it but didn't love it as much as I wanted to. Because, while I enjoyed this book, I will say I found it a bit contradictory at times (see safety spoilers below for further details).
What I liked:
- That the h wasn't a pushover. The H messes up big time & I LOVED that she doesn't just take him back. In fact
- While I personally feel he could have groveled a tiny tad bit more, he definitely worked to get her back.
- The different ways he tries to makes it up to her, especially the scene where he washed and combed her hair.
What I didn't like:
The reasons & quotes listed in the next section are also why I say this book is safe with exceptions with twist of that exception.

- The exception takes place in book 1 of this series which events occur between the prologue and chapter 1 of this book. Any scenes w/ the H and the other woman take place ONLY in book 1.

I read this book weeks ago, and I’m so behind on reviews, so this is gonna suck. :) I didn’t read the first book, but in a nutshell Heath and Sydney hooked up for a bit (I’m not sure if that part was in book 1) when he suddenly got engaged to that h (Kacey). The two were friends and other than one kiss, I don’t believe romantic. I think she was hung up on her H, and he was trying to appease his mother that was dying. I’m not sure how bad it was or how hard Heath tried to stay with her, but here, he makes it seem like it was only a friend’s situation. 🤷♀️
This one starts with Sydney learning about the engagement in the prologue, then the first chapter several (3 I think) months after the broken engagement with Heath trying to get back with Sydney. We get both POV’s , so we know that originally Sydney was more invested in the “relationship” than Heath. It took the separation for him to realize she was what he wanted. They are VERY different. He comes from a wealthy family and has a professional job. She’s covered in tats and is a waitress.
The writing was confusing and conflicting at times. Sydney’s thoughts could just flip on a dime to try to provide us with the response the author wanted at that point. She’d flip from tough to weak, to confident to insecure, and some parts made zero sense. Like him telling her
Bottom Line- It was ok. I thought the author did a good job of convincing me that Heath was all in, and Sydney definitely made him work for it, but I dislike it when an “event” causes a forced proximity reconciliation. There’s a teeny tiny bit of OW drama from her ex-BFF that I’m not sure I agreed with. Both their families were lovely and supportive.

This was a FB recommendation. The blurb does not say much, as the whole story takes some surprising turns. I loved the idea behind the romance in this one. Based on the barebones of the romance, this book could have been a 5 star read. However, the actual execution felt lacking in many places, for reasons that elude me.
The outline and timeline of the angst drama between the H, Heath and the h, Sydney is as follows (spoilers ahead!):
1. They both hooked up one night and spend each night in the ensuing week locked in blissful, lovey dovey passion.
2. So a week later, while Sydney is still all starry eyed over their budding romance, she learns from the town gossips that Heath got engaged to another girl!
3. Heath never got back to Sydney to explain, until three months later, once his engagement is over (due to the romance from Book 1). This made him realise what a mistake he did when he left Sydney. He comes to her place of work, makes an apology and wants to meet her again. Sydney who was heartbroken by his callous behaviour and had to endure watching him and his fiancée during these months rightly dumps soda on him in public.
4. Heath seemingly does not get the message and tries time and again to get her to give him the time of the day. In her haste to get some space from him, she gets caught in a chain of events that gets her life endangered. During her recovery, Heath makes himself omnipresent, against her wishes.
The above is basically the first 6 chapters of the book (out of 23). I clearly suck at recounting plot succintly but I hope I got the gist out. So, my point is that based on the above outline, this should have been an awesome angst read, with all the feels. Except that, there were glaringly missing scenes to sell credibly the angst and the grovel!! I am always dumbfounded when authors choose to bypass and gloss over key moments of a romance. I am like, why?? Why cheat us on all the goodness?? There were two scenes that I felt cheated on:
🥧 The work place scene! That would have been the gold medal angst scene! But nope, we are not privy to what he said exactly, how he said it, the ambience around it, her feelings when he dumped his words on her, her fury, the soda dumping... Nope, nothing, nada, zilch! 🧐 Why? Why?? Why such a weird editorial choice?? Cold reporting of such a key moment, over few sentences is quasi criminal in a romance book!!
🥧 The emotional buildup and inner reasoning of why Heath went into dogged pursuit of Sydney after his engagement broke down. There was a two liner explanation out there that kind of explained his attraction to Sydney and that having his two bffs (one of them being his ex-fiancée) found their HEA being eye opening on how he fucked up with Sydney. I also understood why he blindly jumped into the engagement and held it for three months. BUT that still was not enough to make me understand and feel why he was so desperate to get Sydney back and why he knew he made a mistake. Clearly, the psychology part was dearly missing here. How can I believe in his grovel efforts when I don't even know why he wants the girl in the first place? And to add to my confusion, he himself admitted that his week with her was just for fun and pleasure. He admitted attraction, but to my mind, attraction does not legitimise his desperate need to get her back. There is definitely a missing fill-in-the-blank imho.
That said, if I make abstraction of these first confusing 6 chapters, the grovel part was interesting in the way it was imagined and plotted. Basically, for Heath, his brand of grovel consisted of invading every aspect of her life (mainly because of her long physical recovery), in a silencious, gentle but relentless manner. Funnily, just before this book, I re-read The Marriage Bed which coincidentally also had a bulldozing H who imposed himself in the h's life against her consent. After these 2 books, I have to say I have developped some aversion to these kind of Hs - I think because there is an irritating/ revolting aftertaste in the way they act against the h's wishes. Hence, not my favourite type of grovel. That said, Heath did it better than John (from The Marriage Bed) because at least he showed and proved that his every bulldozing action was motivated by a need to be devoted to Sydney and take care for her. I still do not like that type of grovel but it boils down to my personal preferences.
As regards the writing style, I found it sincere and brilliant in some places (e.g. the mud slide scenes, the realism of the physical therapy parts, the parents scenes). But I also found that in other parts, the style lacked some finesse and emotional depth - it sometime read as too much 'in your face', esp. by the use of the 1st person narrative in present tense.
The storytelling got better, smoother in the last half of the book. Towards the end, the romance veered unexpectedly in another direction: the grief surrounding the H before and after losing a parent. These chapters were well done, but their apposition right after the angsty romance journey between Heath and Sydney felt a bit odd and jarring to me. Like I found myself suddenly landed into a story with another tone and purpose.
To sum up, this book had its great and less great moments. The story was very original and I welcomed it as such. But I am very marked by a feeling of incompleteness and missed opportunities (bafflingly so!). The story deserves to have a tigher editing to really make all the plot elements come together smoothly and soundly into their full potential. Hopefully that can still happen. I would re-read with pleasure if the story was tweaked.

I have no idea where I have been for the last couple of months, because I cannot believe I didn’t see Ms. Heywood had this beauty out! Once I saw it, I knew I had to read it—and I was totally blown away by it.
Man, there were times when I wanted to punch some sense into Heath's little brain, but thankfully, Sydney did an awesome job there. I loved it, and I loved how protective Gigi (Sydney’s grandmother), her grandfather, and Cecil were of her.
There is a moment that had me on pins and needles, hoping that Ms. Heywood did not just rip my heart apart... She did not, though I was this close to throwing my phone across my office. Well, that "moment" helped me to see the true Heath, and I fell back in love with him—he let the real Heath come out and shine to Sydney, as well as the whole town.
I honestly think what Heath and Sydney had was something many of us wish for, and when we have it, we have to fight to keep it, no matter what anyone says. There are so many emotions and feels to this beautiful second chance romance.
Thank you, Ms. Heywood, for giving us Heath's story. Everything he went through, not only with Sydney but especially with his mother, had me in tears because that is exactly with my husband went through with his Momma.

I had read the first book so i was surprised when this was released that auth wrote a book for the weak, douche exfiance. And what H did to h was minimally douchey and i couldnt help cringing, along w/ the h, every time it came up. So im thinking, screw this book if theres not some serious groveling. Well, there was some serious grovelling and slowly douche H started winning me over such that by 65% i was H's fan. The h is no doormat and holds strong in demanding and getting what she deserves which is a refreshing change because too many times Hs are forgiven too fast & easily for doing much worse than wat happ in this book.

The start of the book had some rough writing, closer to teenager fanfic quality. The author was trying to recap the previous book and somewhat explain MMCs motivations which you can kinda maybe understand if you squint. But that didn't deter me, I wanted to read a book full of grovel so I continued, after the recap the writing got better, but MMC got increasingly worse. Even tho they haven't been together for months (cos he ghosted her to get engaged to someone else) he feels entitled to her physically. He shows up at her place at 3 am, he constantly touches her, he kissed her while she was pushing him away and only stopped just before she kneed him. Then FMC gets into an accident, she's in the hospital practically immobile with jaw wired shut. He kisses her forehead everytime he visit despite her disliking it. And now at 32% im dnfing becouse her "loving" family just moved her in with him without her consent while she's still disabled and cannot leave on her own. Absolutely disgusting

To be honest I wasn't sure what to expect when I requested to read this book, all I knew was that since it was written by Carey Heywood it is one that becomes an automatic read as I love her books. In Why Lie ? however, the main female character made me want to scream and I was like really, godamn you get over yourself and stop making it all about you. I have not felt this strongly against a character in a while but OMG the character of Sydney really annoyed the heck out of me and despite everything that happened to her I found her to be acting like a spoilt brat. Why Lie ? starts with a wonderful and romantic week between Sydney and Heathcliff aka Heath. The pair haven't let anyone know about them yet and are still in really early days. The next thing though Sydney learns that Heath has just proposed to another chick. Was he using her for sex and nothing else ? Was Sydney just something fun before committing ? Hurt and feeling rejected, Sydney runs away and during this time the engagement is off and we discover the reasoning behind the sudden engagement and the reason it is off. This is why, I believe that you should never propose drunk as you may live to regret it when you are sober. During this time Sydney heads to her grandmother's cabin when tragedy strikes. Realising he doesn't want to give her up without a fight, Heath stands by Sydney right the way through recovery. What really annoyed me was that you can see that Heath wants her forgiveness and is trying to do everything to make it up and she wants to give in but has this damn stubborn streak which I hated as it's like he has personal issues going on , stop making him hurt even more. You either want to be with him or not, stop pusyfooting and playing games. As I haven't read the first one yet, I am eager to read it as I do like Carey Heywood.

Is a romantic story for all those who have loved and lost and especially those wanting to gain a second chance with the ones they truly love and adore and will do anything to make it possible even for a single moment. To be honest I wasn't sure what to expect when I requested to read this book, all I knew was that since it was written by Carey Heywood it is one that becomes an automatic read as I love her books. In Why Lie ? however, the main female character made me want to scream and I was like really, godamn you get over yourself and stop making it all about you. I have not felt this strongly against a character in a while but OMG the character of Sydney really annoyed the heck out of me and despite everything that happened to her I found her to be acting like a spoilt brat. Why Lie ? starts with a wonderful and romantic week between Sydney and Heathcliff aka Heath. The pair haven't let anyone know about them yet and are still in really early days. The next thing though Sydney learns that Heath has just proposed to another chick. Was he using her for sex and nothing else ? Was Sydney just something fun before committing ? Hurt and feeling rejected, Sydney runs away and during this time the engagement is off and we discover the reasoning behind the sudden engagement and the reason it is off. This is why, I believe that you should never propose drunk as you may live to regret it when you are sober. During this time Sydney heads to her grandmother's cabin when tragedy strikes. Realising he doesn't want to give her up without a fight, Heath stands by Sydney right the way through recovery. What really annoyed me was that you can see that Heath wants her forgiveness and is trying to do everything to make it up and she wants to give in but has this damn stubborn streak which I hated as it's like he has personal issues going on , stop making him hurt even more. You either want to be with him or not, stop pusyfooting and playing games. As I haven't read the first one yet, I am eager to read it as I do like Carey Heywood.

Carey Heywood er en mester i kærlighedsromaner med et tvist og denne er ingen undtagelse. Jeg elsker at læse om personer man har mødt før fordi det giver en dybde og fordi man så også kan følge med i deres historie selvom fokus nu er på andre. Det er en rigtig god kærlighedshistorie som dog også indeholder emner som sygdom, det at miste, sorg, venskaber og meget mere. Jeg advarer om at det vil være godt med et par kleenex inden for rækkevidde - i hvert fald hvis man har let til tårer som jeg

There are just some times when you read yourself into a bit of a book funk and just need something light and well written for you to get out of it. Well that and so much more is exactly what I found in, “Why Lie?’. Carey Heywood’s writing is flawless in this book, 5 wonderful stars.
Although this is the second book in the series it can definitely be read as a standalone but will give you spoilers if you haven't read the first book and want to go back to it. Personally for the full effect I think you should read the first book before starting this one.
Sydney is usually a confident and feisty female and is quite happy in with her life so when someone who she never thought would be interested in her (won;t say who as its a nice surprise) flirted a little bit one night she goes with it and is happy to see where it goes. For one intense week Sydney opened herself up to him and let him and things escalated into a bit of a hot and passionate fling. Problem is, Sydney had feelings for him so is rocked to the core when the small town they live in is buzzing with the news of his relationship with someone else literally only hours after he had left Sydney’s bed.
Months later he is determined to win her back but she (very rightly in my opinion) wants nothing to do with him. At this point I was furious with him and the balls he had to think that that she would. However of course things change and he totally won me over.
After n accident Sydney needs help and he is the one that is there for her whether she wants him to be or not. Not only is he with her every day he takes it further and when she is home he takes her in to look after her and cater for all her needs. Slowly her opinion of him changes from haters to some of the feelings that she might have had for him before but her biggest stumbling block is can she really trust him not to hurt him again.
The male in the story has so much going on in his life but the way he looks after and apologises to Sydney does melt your heart and believe mine was quite against him at the start. I loved how you see him realise that mistakes he made and how he will do anything to prove he should get a second chance.
I loved this book from beginning to end and just could not put it down, I ended up staying awake all night to finish meaning I wasn't quite awake at work the next day but at least the book was worth it. The story is of two people who are meant for each other but are broken apart by mistakes that he made and now need to build trust and friendship before things can go any further. We watch their bond grow and the intense feelings build and build. It was such sweet, endearing, loving and heartbreaking story all wrapped up into a perfectly written bundle. Even the epilogue had me tearing up but smiling at the same time. I couldn't recommend this book enough.

After finishing Why Now? I was eager to dig into Why Lie? the characters that Carey Heywood had created were so likeable that I was happy to spend more time with them. While Why Lie? definitely can be read as a stand-alone, as it revolves around a different couple, I would highly suggest reading Why Now? first because there is some backstory in that book that makes Why Lie? more easy to slide into.
I’ve got to be really honest and say I wasn’t a huge fan of Heath when I finished Why Now? and the prologue to this book made me like him even less. After getting into his head I slowly came around to him. He was still a little overbearing for me, but given his specific situation I was able to forgive him for his transgressions. He was obviously trying to control at least one aspect of his life while another part of his life was so desperately out of his hands. By the end of the book he had won me over, had even shed tears for Heath throughout the novel.

Why Lie? Made me fall in love with Sydney, she was such a strong character, I appreciated her refusal to just accept things in her life. I loved that she fought for herself, even when it would have been easier (and probably more beneficial) for her to accept the help offered her. She was fierce and amazing, and I am still in awe of the type of person she was.
Why Lie? absolutely destroyed me at various times. It was so much the story between Sydney and Heath that was so devastating, it was the moments where we saw Heath interacting with his mother. Those moments were so beautiful, so sad, they just broke me. There was so much love there, love that Heath was able to embrace and learn from, there was no question that Heath was exactly the type of man that Sydney needed.
I wholeheartedly give this book 5 stars. I didn’t get everything I wanted in book one, Why Now?, but I got everything in this book. Everything. Hurt, healing, love, pain, all of the things that I look for when I am searching for something amazing to read.

This book the second book in a standalone series called Love Riddles. In this book you get a better look at Sydney and a male character (not going to spoil the reveal ;-)) Mind you I read the first book (Why Now?) just days before getting this one and when I started I still didn't know who he was for a little bit. I thought that was GREAT!!! I loved the reveal and then other things/scenes started to fall into place from Why Now?. This book could definitely be read as a standalone; however, like I just said it was fun (for me) to start putting things together.
I LOVED Sydney and the mystery male character!!! Their story is romantic, sad, touching, sexy, and just touches you with every word. This book made it to my favorites list and I will revisit them again even if I did cry off and on for 50% of this book.

Carey Heywood shoved a knife deep into my black heart, twisted it around a few times, then pulled it out to watch it bleed. All the while, I devoured every single word, cried, fell in love, sobbed, had said black heart trampled over some more, and it ended with the ugliest cry I've ever experience.
This book is a beautiful love story...but it also made me hate Carey with the fire of a thousand suns. Just saying.

I loved Why Now so much I had to get this story. Sydney is not sure where she fits in but her Gigi wants to retire and have Sydney take over the diner but after Heath she doesn’t know if she can stay.
Heath was seeing Sydney for only a week when he announced his engagement to Kacey just when Sydney was getting feelings for him. Heath has apologized and apologized but Sydney wasn’t hearing him so she decided to go to the cabin to think and it almost cost her life. This story had a whole lot going on and that was just part of it and I really loved Sydney and Heath together but it may not be fixed.

This book has been an emotional ride. It was a book with some strong messages. It must have been so hard for Heath to see both his mom and Sydney in pain. He was supportive and made sure to spend time with both of them. Sydney was smart to not just give anyone a second chance but to let them work for it. It is so lovely to see how she and her grandparents have such a beautiful relationship. This book was very beautiful and emotional! Thank you Carey for sharing it with us!

You know what happens when you haven't read anything by a certain author in a while? You forget their ways of sucking all of the emotions out of you. This is what has happened here. Damn you, Carey Heywood! I don't even know where to begin. Like every other book of hers, I was immediately glued to the pages. We're finally getting more of Heath Mackey. I always knew there was more to his story than what we previously learned about him. Now we see what happened before he proposed to Kacey and tried to rush an engagement as we also get to see what happens after that facade is over with. He has to win back the trust of a girl whose heart he cracked. She's not one to forgive that easily. She'll make him work to prove that she can trust him, that everything he does isn't just out of guilt.
It's not all just about the two of them. We also see what happens with his mom. The last 15% of this book killed me. I just so happened to be sick while reading so I told my family I was going to soak in a bath and locked the door. It's just coincidence that all of that sniffling was more prominent then. I couldn't even stop crying after the end. Heck, if I was writing this on note book paper there'd be tears mixed with the ink. It's a fabulous book that I can't wait to read again. It's one of those.

How do you try to please a mother that is going to die? Do you put what you think is best for her first and lose what you have? When you start this book you see something happen that you don't understand the reasoning until you read the whole thing. Do I think he made the right choice? I guess that is not up to you decide. If you are trying to see if you can make you mother happy before she dies, you do what you think will help her. Trying to find the right words for this book is difficult. At the beginning of this book you want to hate Heath. Never to forgive him is what runs through your head. How can someone be so cruel? How can he do what he did to Sydney? Once again you have to take a look at the big picture. Not everything is black and white, that grey area always messes with people. Heath is a person that family will always come first. If he can make them happy, that is what he will do. It is such a good quality, but it can also be bad. It's bad when it ends up hurting people around him. He is a pillar of strength throughout this whole book, and the story that he was given is worth the read. Sydney is that girl that is caught in her emotions. She knows how she feels, but will fight it every step of the way because she was hurt. How to fix a broken heart? How do you learn to forgive? When does that grey area come into your life. Sydney is a very strong person, but being strong doesn't mean you don't need help finding the right path to choose. In this story will see heartbreak, friendship, lies, mistrust, death, healing, and love. What more can you want. I loved seeing all of this happen. The author not only brings you into these people's live, but lets you feel everything they are feeling. There is not much more you can ask for in an author. Feeling everything that you is done in this book makes you feel that life has twists and turns, but if you are willing to give it your all you can come out ton the winning end when sometimes it takes you a long way to get there.
Loved this author loved this author. this is the first time reading her and I fell in love with this book. She wrote a story that could have gone terribly bad, but made it beautiful instead. I can't wait to read more from this author.

I adored Why Now? and couldn’t wait for Heath’s story, but Why Lie? it blew Why Now? out of the water! This book was beautiful, heartbreaking and absolutely amazing!
If you’ve read Why Now? then you know a bit about Heath, and his failed engagement to Kacey, and were probably left wondering why Sydney, the quirky and sweet girl who works at Lola’s ended up spilling a drink on his head. Well we finally get those answers in this book, and I was shocked. Heath really had a lot of making up to do, especially after we found out why Sydney seemed to hate him, and he tried so hard to make things right with her, but it was a long journey.
The dynamic between Heath and Sydney is amazing. Their banter, even when Sydney is brushing him off and angry with him, is hilarious. Sydney doesn’t take crap from anyone and knows she is worth more than how Heath made her feel. He had to do a lot of groveling and work to get her to see he realized his mistake and to give him a second chance. Watching Heath work on gaining Sydney’s trust back was beautiful. I may have not been a fan of his in the beginning of this book, but over and over again, I fell more and more in love with his character.
Not only do we have the beautiful relationship (though sometimes chaotic and crazy) between Sydney and Heath, but we also see some heartbreaking moments for Heath. I became some invested in some of these characters, and even though I knew the time was coming for one of them, I wasn’t prepared for it, and teared up quite a bit.
Carey Heywood did an amazing job at pulling at my heartstrings in this book, making me fall in love with a character I didn’t want to, and to truly believe in second chance romances. This book had everything and I couldn’t put my Kindle down. As soon as I started this book, everywhere I went until I finished my Kindle was attached. Why Lie? is a beautifully written story that will stick with me long after I write this review! I highly encourage anyone who is looking for a second chance romance, a hero that is redeemed, and a few tears, to pick this book up ASAP!

He had to do a lot of groveling and work to get her to see he realized his mistake and to give him a second chance. Watching Heath work on gaining Sydney’s trust back was beautiful. I may have not been a fan of his in the beginning of this book, but over and over again, I fell more and more in love with his character.
Not only do we have the beautiful relationship (though sometimes chaotic and crazy) between Sydney and Heath, but we also see some heartbreaking moments for Heath. I became some invested in some of these characters, and even though I knew the time was coming for one of them, I wasn’t prepared for it, and teared up quite a bit.
Carey Heywood did an amazing job at pulling at my heartstrings in this book, making me fall in love with a character I didn’t want to, and to truly believe in second chance romances. This book had everything and I couldn’t put my Kindle down. As soon as I started this book, everywhere I went until I finished my Kindle was attached. Why Lie? is a beautifully written story that will stick with me long after I write this review! I highly encourage anyone who is looking for a second chance romance, a hero that is redeemed, and a few tears, to pick this book up ASAP!

Why Lie is a new, contemporary romance novel by Author Carey Heywood. It is the second book in the Love Riddles series, but can be read as a standalone.

The first few chapters of Why Lie seemed to start out a little slow for me, but I hung on because of the initial premise of Heath and Sydney's story. I'm SO glad that I was persistent in reading, because the remainder of the story was a sweet gem to be cherished. The main characters, Sydney and Heath were both strong in personality and in will. When Heath decided that life was so much better with Sydney, he went all out. Swoon. I love it when a man fights for the woman he wants and loves. And then, when he cherished her even after the fight, it made him the most valiant hero of all. But, this love affair was not one-sided. Sydney was such a caring and responsive young woman, giving all that she had to ensure life was worth living.
Of the secondary characters, one in particular captivated me, speaking simple, but heart-huge words that made me cry like a baby. This special person added a component to Why Lie that was life-changing and shown a large spotlight on character personalities which otherwise might have been unseen.

If you are looking for a novel with strong characters, enduring love, and swoon-worthy moments, you MUST check out Why Lie.

Oh Heath, precious Heath. Heath is the ultimate good guy, until he makes a drunken mistake. In the aftermath of this mistake, he tries to do the “good guy” thing and ends up breaking Sydney’s heart. Heath and Sydney happened quickly, but it was meaningful for both of them. After Heath’s mistake, it’s hard for Sydney to forgive and forget quite so easily.
I love that Heath refused to give up. He stuck around and showed Sydney that he was really in it. That he really believed in them. Sydney has a tough girl exterior, but on the inside she’s just a person that gets hurt and feels inadequate at times. She doesn’t believe she’s good enough for Heath and Heath’s mistake further proves that. Once she starts to let Heath back in, she does so tentatively, he’s burned her before, and he has the capacity to leave her in pieces. Sidney refuses to let her heart be vulnerable at the hands of Heath Mackey again.
I absolutely LOVE that Heath’s friends take in Sydney so easily and happily, they’re truly great people and Sydney deserves people like her around her, especially after her so called friends turn out to be literally the worst.
I’m intrigued by the tiny bit of Trip/Reilly chemistry and low key hope that’ll be who Reilly ends up with. Either way, I’m very excited about Reilly’s story!!

This is the second book in Carey's Love Riddles Series, and I could not be more excited that it was about Heath.
We meet Heath in book 1, Why Now? and even though I wasn't crazy about his actions, I could see underneath was a good guy with a big heart. He's a people-pleaser, and with a terminal parent, he does everything in his power to make wishes come true. Including hurting a girl he was falling for.
Why Lie? is Heaths chance to make it right. And if there's one thing Carey does fantastically, it's write a swoon-worthy male lead who deserves a second chance. And who he wants it from is Syndey.
As much as I love Heath, I ADORE Sydney. She's spunky, tatted up, and doesn't usually care much about what people think about her. Underneath that persona is a simple girl who wants what everyone wants. To be loved. She has the support of her grandparents, and after being a bit of a vagabond, she's settled in their small town of Ferncliff.
I love the way Carey brings these two together. The overall tone of this book isn't hearts and flowers and sappy moments. It's raw, and emotional. There are some gut-wrenching passages that will bring tears to your eyes. That's not to say that there isn't an HEA, because lucky for us, Carey is kind.
I was actually very sad to finish this book. I wasn't ready to say goodbye to Heath or Syd. I am looking forward to the next book in the Love Riddles series, and I hope whoever she brings us next, she includes a bit of these two.

I received an advance copy of this book for an honest review.
First, if you haven't read Why Now?, I suggest you read it. It's not necessary, since these books are standalone romances, but you get a little taste of Sydney and Heath and the reason for their turmoil. You'll also be introduced to all the characters.
Carey Heywood is a master at pulling your heartstrings! She has this way with words that puts you right in the emotional turmoil that her characters experience. This book was no different. I felt all of the despair, hurt, uncertainty, and self doubt. Then the love and longing for each other that Sydney and Health felt. Added to the mix of their love story was his mom's health problems. I needed a box of tissues!
When it came to their journey, I couldn't understand how Heath could be so utterly clueless about what he did. I guess when you're so worried about your mom and being perfect, you don't think clearly. When he does come to his senses, is it too late? Has he done too much damage to redeem himself and make up for the pain he caused Sydney?
I was amazed how someone so confident and sexy like Sydney could be left with such doubt about herself. She lost that spark that made her who she is. Heath made her feel less than. She's different from most girls in their tiny town, and she believed that she wasn't "the marrying kind" after Heath's betrayal.
I loved these characters so much! They both show such strength of character. This is an emotional but sweet journey to forgiveness and true love. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

This is the first book by Carey Heywood that I have read and I really loved it. This is the second book of the Love Riddles series and I am really excited to go back and read the first book in this series.
Sydney is a just a girl who thought she was finally finding true love, but then turns out that she would just get hurt in the end. Seriously, when Heath did what he did, I was so mad at his character and I was happy that Sydney kept strong and didn't just forgive Heath right away. Sydney is a very hard working and proud woman. Her strength is intimidating to people, but for Heath, that is one of the things he loves most about her.
Heath is a swoon worthy man who just needs a little direction in his life. He is very devoted to his family and loves them deeply and just wants to make them happy. He knew he messed up and he let go of the girl who was meant to be his, but he would stop at nothing to get her back. When Heath finally starts letting Sydney in and showing her the real Heath, Sydney's walls start coming down and soon, these two people are falling for each other all over again.

I loved the family connection that Heath brought Sydney into with his family, the devotion and emotions between these two characters as well. Carey Heywood really knows how to write a story line that will keep you captivated and characters that you will just fall in love with.
