Cara Colter was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, surrounded by ranches, but she was always a reluctant city girl. A journalism graduate, she has been making her living with words for her entire adult life. Before published her first romance novel in 1987, she wrote educational materials, newspaper stories, magazine articles and even sermons!
"I am living proof that dreams come true," Cara says. "I am an ordinary person leading an extraordinary life."
Now she lives on a small acreage in British Columbia. She shares her life with her personal hero, Rob, a cat and eight horses. She has three grown children, and already is a granmother.
I loved this book. Shoshauna has been ruled by royal convention all her life. She has had every material things she could wish for, but she has also been incredibly lonely. She is all set to marry a man she doesn't love when gunfire erupts at her wedding. Jake, there as part of the security team, takes her away to keep her safe. He fights hard to keep things professional and she fights just as hard to experience the things she never has.
I loved Shoshauna. She had been a good little princess all her life but she's also been aware that something is missing. She had hoped getting married would fill that void but the closer the wedding came the more she was sure she was making a mistake. When her wedding was stopped and she was taken away she was excited to finally have a chance to be ordinary. I really enjoyed the way she so quickly figured out how to get Jake to help her. I loved how she got so much enjoyment out of doing simple things like trying to cook and make beds. I felt so bad for her when she was telling Jake about why she ended up engaged. It was great to see how being around Jake gave her the chance to see what she was capable of and that she had the strength to go after what she really wanted.
Jake was a soldier first and foremost. As a special operations soldier he knew that being in any kind of relationship was not fair to the one left behind. He also didn't really believe in love after watching his mother chase it for years after his father's death. He was captivated by Shoshauna the first time he saw her, but his duty was always at the front of his mind. As they escape he is surprised by the fact that she seems happy about all of it. As the days go on he finds that the lines between duty and desire are blurring. He wants to give her the experiences she desires but keeping his emotions out of it is getting harder each day. I really loved seeing him help her spread her wings and loved his quiet happiness that she was gaining the confidence to stand up for herself. When they had to part he realized that she had broken through the walls around his heart and that his life was forever changed. I also liked the way that something Shoshauna said helped him patch things up with his mother.
I absolutely loved seeing what happened to them six months after their adventure. Shoshauna had finally become the person she wanted to be and Jake had accepted his own changes. I loved his whole persona and how it really made his part in the story so special.
Princess Shoshauna (I only know how to pronounce this because this is Jerry Seinfeld's wife's name) is getting married today.
Jake Ronan hates weddings. But as the best of the best in his military special ops team, Ronan is scheduled to look after the Princess during her ceremony in the fictitious country of B'Ranasha.
Problem is ... the Princess really doesn't want to get married. She wants to cut her hair, wear shorts and cook all by herself. Pampered all her life, Shoshauna just wants to be like every other twenty-one year old (which ironically, every twenty-one year old is looking to be someone's princess, right?).
When a gunman storms the wedding and fires a few shots, Ronan leaps into action (literally) and takes off with the Princess to a secluded island where she will be safe until they find out who the person or people are behind the plot.
This is a tale of awakening and discovery. Shoshauna discovers what it's like to be normal. She cuts her hair, gets a bikini and a sunburn and, the one thing she's always dreamed of, a friend.
Ronan is in hell. Shoshauna is trying her hardest to be his friend and all he can think of doing is pulling the raven haired beauty down into the sands of the tropical island getaway and kissing her senseless. But she has be kept safe at all costs ... even if that's at the cost of Ronan's heart.
Great read. Very quick and well written even for a Harlequin Romance. I am a fan of Cara Colter so the fact that I really liked this book didn't come as that big of a surprise!
A princess must hide and with her she has a hunky protector. She wants to be an ordinary woman, and he, well he has a hard time resting her.
Characters: Princess Shoshauna of an island kingdom is innocent and protected. She doesn't want to marry but well she has too. She is curious and her strength grows.
Ronan is a touch soldier who has dealt with the worst that war brings but a sweet little princess is too much for him and he melts.
Romance:
Actually almost nothing. It's more her growth, him teaching her, and then some sweetness at the end.
Bad things:
I did except at least some romance on that island, but he is a true gentleman.
Good things:
Quick, sweet and a book you just read without thinking.
Final thoughts:
They are like they always are. Sweet books with that HEA that no one doubts.
