Second Chance, Iowa

Rate this book
What if the one that got away… didn’t?
Hometown hero Danny Garcia is proud of his small town life, thank you very much. After a devastating heartbreak, he fought tooth and nail to put his life back together again. All Danny wants now is a second chance at the happiness he never thought he’d get. But what if that second chance comes in the arms of the man who left him all those years ago?

“You think you can just waltz in and pick up right where you left off? You don’t get to undo the past. You have to live with it.”
“I hate myself for what I did. I know I can’t take it back, but I just need you to know I’m sorry.”

Bestselling author Colton Catherwood never thought he’d come back to Cherry Creek, Iowa. The small town is full of painful memories - his mother’s death, his father’s hateful beliefs about Colt’s orientation, and, of course, Danny. Colt knows he hurt Danny and doesn’t blame him for being angry about the past. But when his father’s sudden illness forces Colt to come home, all his feelings for Danny come rushing back.

“Don’t you want this?”
“Of course I want this. I never stopped wanting this. Never stopped wanting you.”

Danny trusts Colt about as far as he can throw him - so why is Colt’s return throwing him so far off balance? Danny’s spent the past seven years getting over Colt and he could have sworn he finally felt nothing for the man. He’s determined to keep it that way, but it sure would be easier if Colt would hurry up and leave town again.

As Colt adjusts to life back in Cherry Creek, he can’t deny that his passion for Danny burns as strongly as it ever did. And he’s sure Danny feels it too. So why won’t he admit it? Colt wants to apologize, but Danny will barely give him the time of day. How can they ever move on if they can’t even speak to each other?

“I never meant for us to end this way. I get it now. I’m bad for you. Having me in your life does nothing but hurt you.”
“Please. I can’t take another rejection right now. Especially not from you.”

What Cherry Creek, Iowa lacks in size, it makes up for in drama. The longer Colt stays in town, the more the past becomes unburied and secrets get revealed. And as Colt and Danny are thrown together, it seems that fate has a sense of humor, because the town of Cherry Creek, Iowa used to have a different name - it was founded by a huckster scam artist who called it Second Chance. Will hurt feelings and lack of trust tear these two lovebirds apart again, or will Colt and Danny finally get the second chance they deserve?

Second Chance, Iowa is a steamy, 70,000 word second chance romance - a no cliffhanger standalone with an HEA ending.

Martyr syndrome usually bores me, but this was a better rendition of that particular plot device in a second-chance romance.

The feels were there, the chemistry was there, the foundation was there, and the present was just as engrossing as the past.

Both MCs were likeable, which is essential IMHO in this type of story, so yeah. 3.75 rounded up. Would've received 4 with a better cover. Not to be mean, but I've cooked up better graphics on Adobe in 5 minutes than that travesty.

Good thing I don't judge books solely on their covers, but this one truly deserved a better effort. For my pea-brain, it smacks of laziness and/or disinterest in the final product, especially when the content is up to par.

Just sayin'.

Meh, I bought this book cheap at Amazon, because I love a good second chance story. However this fell flat.
A good second chance story (IMO) makes the MC's work for it, AND if one of the characters have been an absolute idiot, I want to see some fucking grovelling, not just: 'Oh, you're still hot, so I forgive you, even though you haven't apologized.'
And this is basically what happened, before I threw in the towel.
So yeah a miss for me.

Was ok.

It wasn't a bad story, and the main characters were sweet. But it took too long of back and forth with misunderstandings that I finally had to skim to the end. Unfortunately, the same conflict was still going on. It was too long a story for what little substance there was in it.

It was ok. It couldn't hold my interest; today I returned and it didn't get any better. Too much same old, same old, misunderstandings, no communication, add to that the wannabe-boyfriend returning and you know everything there is to know.

This was a sweet story, but I would have enjoyed it so much better if there had been more of Colt and Danny reconnecting and less of the misunderstandings and ex boyfriends drama going on. The MCs spent more time apart than together and that disappointed me. The ending was sweet, but I think an epilogue would have been nice to tie up some of the loose ends. 3.5 stars

Well I sort of liked this one. And sort of didn't...

All characters were well written. The were enjoyable and felt real. I liked both Colt and Danny, just maybe not always together...

The story in itself was not bad, but average.

What I didn't like was all the miscommunication and unnecessary drama. I also felt the ending a bit rushed and it left more than one loose end.
That would normally equal a lower rating, but I do love that the author took the time effort to write the characters this good so that seriously bumped up my rating.

I have read several books by this author and really do like her books. Unfortunately, this was a bit over the top for me as far as the “mis-communications” go. I mean, both Danny and Colt were great MC’s, but my goodness, they just kept yelling and walking in and out of each other’s lives several times after re-acquainting themselves with each other after 7 years. It was a bit too much. I did like the story and the supporting cast, but it’s not my favorite book.

I actually enjoyed Danny and Colts characters. It was sort of a too easy get back together but I was not expecting a lot from the book.
Since I am from a small Iowa town, I see a lot of similarities in the people of the town with my own.

One of the best boos I have read by this author so far! Danny and Colt are amazing... Parts of the story hurt; but that is life. A touching, wonderful second chance at love story!

4 Solid Stars. I really enjoyed Danny and Colt and all of the supporting characters were good too. An epilogue would have been nice. The ending was a bit abrupt but certainly satisfactory. I think there is even room for a sequel telling about Colt's book being made into a TV series. It could even be about an entirely new couple in Cherry Creek with Danny & Colt's relationship as a second story-line. (Hint, Hint Spencer)

I read this using Kindle Unlimited and liked it enough to go back a purchase a copy. The book is worth way more than .99 cents. I have read a lot of books that were way more expensive and way less enjoyable.

An ARC review
I really enjoyed this book. The characters of Colt and Danny were well written, as well as the supporting characters. The thing that drove me crazy to no end was the miscommunications. It was frustrating. Yes he hurt you seven years ago, but can you give the guy the time to plead his case before giving up. The ending felt unfinished. Yes they had their HEA but it felt like there should have been more. Should I be waiting for a Tangled and Tongue Tied ;-)

Really loved this book. Poor Colt having a parent not approving of his lifestyle, especially after losing his mom. Then spending seen years away from the one he loved. Really enjoyed that Colt and Danny were there for each other when it was all said and done.

I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Give this a chance

I completely liked this story. There's enough angst and complications to keep one interested. The two main protagonists are well developed and believable. The secondary characters add depth. Even the tertiary characters play important parts. Only two negatives. A character, Bill, is not explained. It also needs a bit of editing.

Has potential

I'm torn on this review. I really enjoyed most of the book, until it turned into a soap opera. It really didn't need all the unnecessary drama. I would have loved more than 5 minutes of their HEA.

Heart warming

This story was nice. It a story about trusting yourself and growing up. It about really trusting someone and discovering what love is . it about emotions that some face or shall I say hide

3.5/5

A neat and sweet book on second chance. However, for all the drama cramming at the end, the book's ending was awfully anti-climatic. Despite that, I still loved it anyway.

Second, third or fourth

Unrequited love. Mess it up, clean it up but mess it up again. Almost get it right but mess it up again (gets a little boring). Finally get it right!
