This book could have been been miles better than it actually was.
The set up and conflict was really quite good. Houston was madly in love with his girlfriend Rain. She gets pregnant and he wants to get married. They have triplets and eight months after the kids' birth, on what should have been his wedding day Rain deserts him at the altar. She actually runs away with her best friend's boyfriend. That best friend, Liv, also happens to be the kids' godmother.
Fast forward to five years just as the kids are starting kindergarten we learn that Liv and Houston have been pretty much raising the kids together, she stays at their house a lot of the time. But it is all platonic as Liv and Houston are just best friends.
A chance remark by one of the kids get both Liv and Houston beginning to consider each other in a less than (or more than) platonic light.
This really could have been a really great romance. Except the story is too short to really explore the promising set up. Instead of using an opportunity to really flesh out the friends to lovers story and deal realistically with the sudden reappearance of Rain so many years later in a more thoughtful manner. Instead the book relies on sex and a disappointingly shallow resolution to the abandonment issue. Instead of going into why Rain left, she is just painted as a flake. Even worse we are given no real insight as to why she has come back. We never hear from her or get any of her POV. It all feels like ab "oh by the way and this is what happens with that issue..."
But outside of my disappointment with the story, the editing is really quite atrocious. There are misused words, names are spelled wrong on several occasions, at one point Liv is written as 'live' (lowercase), case disagreements abound. Also the book kept referring to Rain having been gone for three years. But the math doesn't add up if she left when the kids were eight months old and now they are five. Just shoddy work.
Houston impatiently waits for the love of his life to meet him at the altar when he sees his best friend Liv stumble through the church doors instead of his bride. He knows by her appearance that something has gone horribly wrong and his life will never be the same.
Fast forward years later and we deliciously discover that life does indeed go on after being "Left" at the altar. Now, decisions have to be made. Can friends turn into lovers? Should they?
Here's an edited teaser:
“I understand why you’re wary. But this is you and me. There’s nothing we can’t do together. Tell me you haven’t wondered what we’d be like together.” “Have you?” I ask turning the tables. “Every damn night since I discovered how soft your lips are.” He traces my lips with his fingertip. I shiver. “Houston—.” “I’m not going to push you.” He leans in pausing a millimeter from my lips. “Neither of us is ready for this. Not yet. But you should’ve talked to me about it, not run.” “No more disappearing?” he asks. “No,” I whisper. “Good. Next time, I’ll chase your ass down.” I know he means every word. “We’re all right?” I ask breathlessly. “We’re all right.”
Lastly, I was thrilled to see that the gorgeous book cover matches the description in the book!
What's worse than getting left at the altar? Having the bride run off with your best man!! Actually it gets worse he already has three children triplets with the runaway bride !! Yep that's what happened to Houston Maloney. His best friend Liv helps him pick up the pieces. I love these two together. Liv's boyfriend happens to be the guy the bride ran off with total drama. This is a cute story it is short and sweet I can be read in an afternoon I recommend this book to you.
I have read many of this author's books and this one did not disappoint. This was a great read. Liv did annoy me a couple of times of when Houston wanted to move their relationship forward and she acted like this was not what she wanted.
I was really looking forward to this story, and I was left feeling disappointed and unsatisfied. It felt rushed and incomplete, and being that the author is a veteran writer, I expected this story to not have so many obvious spelling and grammar errors, along with one too many fragmented sentences.
Houston's fiance ditches him at the altar and runs away with Liv's man, leaving him to raise their three-year old triplets by himself. Liv, being their godmother, steps up and helps Houston raise the children while fighting off her physical attraction to Houston. Everything afterward is a literal whirlwind. I can understand and appreciate the intention of this being a short story, but the author breezes through this thing so fast, the plot was seriously underdeveloped.
Spoiler: The baby mama and her new husband re-appear after being gone for some years and she wants to reconnect with her kids. Houston denies her because she's an unfit mother. Cool, I can understand. But what was the reason for burning down Liv's condo? It was never established who the arsonist was. Was it just a plot move to get Live to move in with Houston? I'm rambling. I'ma stop here...

Houston Maloney is a very happy man,he is about to marry the woman of his dreams & the mother of his children. As he looks down the aisle, expecting to she his wife to be,he sees his children's Godmother instead, with tears running down her face and a letter in her hand. Liv loved her God children,so when her Best Friend ran off with her boyfriend she is not only devastated for herself, but for Houston and the kids,so Liv steps up to be all she can for the children she loves, but after years of co parenting(so to speak) Liv finds herself fall for Houston. What will she do when's she finds out her is falling for her too. Good book for a relaxing evening. Liv and Houston were too cute for words. I really liked how their romance progressed. For a short book ,it didn't feel rushed like some books often do. Good read.
To be succinct, I liked this book, but in my opinion it wasn't pitch perfect. I say this because, not only was there a bit of lag, but the epilogue was lacking, and the birth mother's character was underdeveloped. All in all, it was a decent read that showcases the improvement in Ms. Colt's skills as a writer..
Houston was not only humiliated but also devastated when his fiancé Rain left him at the alter to run off with his best friend Liv’s boyfriend. Reading the Prologue was painful. My heart broke for him.
For three years, Houston and Liv have been co-parenting his triplets while suppressing their attraction and romantic feelings for each other. Neither one has dated in those years and neither one is was willing to risk their perfect makeshift family until Houston got a taste of Liv…
Wonderful story and an emotional read.
I almost took off a whole star due to the terrible editing that distracted from the story. But the story was too good.
4.5 stars for this one! Houston is the classic alpha male and I love him. Imagine standing at the alter waiting for the mother of your triplets to join you in matrimony, when her maid of honor comes in with tears streaming down her face. You and she have been left! Your woman has taken off with her man. What do you do?
Well, Houston and Liv get on with raising the kids, that's what. Two little girls and a boy are in need of a loving home, and Liv is more than willing to step in, as only a good godmother would.
After three years of helping her best friend raise his babies, it is time for them to start kindergarten. Liv is the typical mother figure, crying that the babies are growing up. Houston is her rock and she leans on him. They have a great family dynamic, except they at not a couple. Things soon change as they both fail to fight the attraction that has been tugging them together.
Finally giving into their desires, the two fall hard and fast. It is easy to do when the man you are now sleeping with has been your best friend and confidant. Of course there has to be some drama, and I will allow the reader to discover what happens on their own. Let's just say I was pissed. Anyway, things work out in the end and the little makeshift family is kept intact.
I enjoyed the way Houston is so protective of Liv and his family. Houston is sexy and strong and all alpha male, making the sex scenes very enticing. Liv is a very lucky lady, indeed.
Left is filled with characters that are worth getting to know. The only things that are lacking are better editing and adding a few more chapters. My heart goes out to kids abandoned by a parent. It’s nice to read a story about people working together to give children a sense of normalcy and to see that family is what you make it. In this case the mother leaves the father at the alter abandoning both him and their triplets. His best friend steps up to the plate and helps him raise them. This falls under the friends to lovers trope, but it didn’t feel like a “trope read” , so hats off to the author on that point. There was also a good bit of body positivity in this one. And discussions about growing up and figuring out what actually matters. There’s a lot to like about the style of this read.
I'm torn! I really, really liked the storyline and the characters. BUT, there was so many errors throughout the entire book, that it took away from the story and disrupted the flow. I kept wondering... Who would release a book under their name with SO MANY blatant errors.
Aside from that, it was a quick, easy, light-hearted and HEA story.
Who knew being left at the altar could be the best thing to happen?
I like this story, it was cute. Liv and Houston were really sweet and their friendship built a solid foundation for their relationship. The only reason I couldn’t give this 5 stars is because I think the story could’ve benefited from a little bit of extra length. While nothing felt rushed, it would’ve been nice to see more time with then getting used to their new roles in each other’s lives, more time with the kids, and developed out the drama with the exes more.
This was a great book. The tiny humans were a great addition to this story. Deja, Echo and Phoenix were great to push their dad and godmother to see that they would work great as a family without even trying. Houston and Liv just needed the seed planted to get to their HEA after the sh*tshow that happened to them.
Both Houston and Liv suffered the most devastating and humiliating event to happen to anyone. The only thing that saved them is helping to raise the triplets together when their exes Tony and Rain ran away with each other on Houston and Rain's wedding day. Now that the kids are older and going to school and have questions about mothers and family was like a whole reality happened. When Phoenix/said they have someone better than a mother, they have a Liv, that made Houston and Liv realize that they are not just best friends, but they love each other and are in love with each other . They just needed to wait for the right time to seal the deal.
Shyla wrote a sweet and interesting love story about two hurt people healing together, with each other and coming into the revelation that they mean more to each other than friends. Their mutual love of the triplets Phoenix, Echo and Deja is what seals their HEA with all threats to their happiness is eliminated.
Just as I was about to give up on this genre, I stumbled across Left. It starts off with Houston being left at the alter on his wedding day. Only to find out that his bride to be left with his best friend's man. Not only does she leaves Houston but she leaves the babies they had together also.
What separates this book from others is that Houston doesn't become bitter or crazy. He loves and raises his kids grows his business learns lessons about love. So when he loves again he knows what to do....I really love this character and I really like Liv (his best friend). It's a sweet story all it needs is a little editing.
Left is an amazing book. The story held my attention from front to back. I loved the characters. Houston and Liv were human and hurt by what Rain and Anthony did. It was cruel.
Left is an amazing book. The story held my attention from beginning to end. The characters were great the way they interact with each other. Houston and Liv were allowed to be human and show fear and hurt. What Rain and Anthony did was cruel. Houston and Liv were a perfect fit.
First things first... that freaking cover is everything!... it's actually what caught my attention.
This book was everything I needed, short, sweet, drama, hot ass man and kids.
I felt it could have been longer and to be honest it was the first time in a long time that I have purchased a book with less then 200 pages. Nevertheless still enjoyed the read!
This caught my attention because it involved older characters, and the cover was nice. Houston, was left at the altar and she ran off with her friend Liv's man, Tony. The story was very short, friendship to love. There were some editing issues but it was enjoyable
4.00 stars. A short emotionally charged story delivered in a quiet soothing manner. Two sets of couples, the story's hero, Houston Maloney is engaged to Rain and the story's heroine Liv Cole lives with her boyfriend , Anthony, this quartet is like family. Liv is the God Mother of Houston's and Rain's triplets and the wedding planner for their nuptials. On the day of the wedding, Rain deserts her children, leaves Houston at the altar and elopes with Anthony. After three years of personal healing and caring for the triplets, Houston and Liv gradually grow from best friends to lovers. Shortly after they confess their love for each other, Rain reveals to Houston that she and Anthony are married and expecting a child and that she plans to seek custody of the triplets. In the end, the court decides in Houston's favor and he and Liv marry and vow to have children together. It was pleasant to read how Houston and Liv struggled with their romantic feeling without too much angst and equally pleasant to have them remain a faithful couple as they faced obstacles.
Both characters are fully realized and we get a real sense of who they are. Houston and Liv are friends at the start of the book. They are both betrayed by their significant others. Houston is left at the altar with triplets when the mother of his children and Liv’s good friend...I might add....runs off with Liv’s boyfriend. Liv and Houston form a family of sorts....Liv as godmother to his children and his best friend. They come to realize that they love each other as more than friends. The book’s description is misleading.....the fire didn’t happen until late in the story after they had realized their feelings and acted on them. The mother returns and tries to sue for custody. I am happy to say that she did not break up that sweet family. The book had some typos and the spacing on the pages was WEIRD. These distractions did not take away from this sweet story about losing everything and rebuilding better.
Houston is waiting at the front of the church for the woman he has loved more than anything. They have had a lot of pressure on them lately with having triplets and planning a wedding. Not to mention he is opening a new business but he’s doing everything in his power to make it all work.
Rain, the bride to be and mother to his children never comes to meet him at the altar. Instead, it is his crying female best friend and Rain’s maid-of-honor, Livy. With her makeup streaking her face, he knew it had to be bad. She tries to hand him a note that will change all their futures.
Now, three years have passed and the triplets are starting kindergarten. If it weren’t for his best friend, Livy, the children’s Godmother he would never have made it. She is the female role model they can look up to and feel secure with.
Until an ill-received letter reaches Houston‘s desk that he thought was gone for good. Once again she wants to rock his world but this time the children are old enough to feel the effects.
I give this: 5++++ stars. I found this free on Amazon.
I really liked the characters in this book. The story was very identifiable and had the gritty quality of real life.
For me, the biggest flaw was the odd jumps in the narrative, specifically right before the sex scenes. There would always be a loss of detail. In the first one, I’m not even sure exactly where it happened… On the porch, in the grass…were they standing, sitting? And then there was the garage scene where I wasn’t aware they had left the main room, and thought that the photographer was still standing right there. I had to go back and re-read each of those pre-passion sections over again to try and make the scenes makes sense. It interrupted the flow of the book and made everything feel disconnected.
