From Laura Wadsworth Carter comes the first book in THE ELECT DUOLOGY, a modern dystopian retelling of David and Goliath.

For the past twelve years, The Foundation has used an army of programmed child soldiers, the Young Ones, to protect its reign. As one of those soldiers, seventeen-year-old August does whatever is asked of him, even if it means doing terrible things to his own people. Because August, like the rest of the children, is completely unaware of what he's doing.

But when one small accident leads to a major awakening for August and three other Young Ones, including the beautiful and fierce Elisa, submission is the last thing on their minds, and they soon find themselves at the front of a growing rebellion.

Forced to rediscover who he is, what it means to love, and where he fits in the uprising, all while trying to stay alive, August has his blood-stained hands full. And once he joins in a fight he has little chance of winning, he soon realizes that deception hides behind the most unlikely faces, and desperation leads to unthinkable acts. But all he needs is a crack, and the Foundation will crumble.

Meeeehhhh. My momma taught me if you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all...the premise is interesting, but I just never really got into this book, or cared about any of characters. 🤷🏼‍♀️

For years, seventeen-year-old August has been an unwitting tool of the Foundation. He's helped this oppressive government maintain ultimate control over his country, Belstrana, hunting so-called "criminals" who have dared violate its rigid, restrictive laws. Yes, the Foundation has taken and is using the country's children to keep order, and once that horrific truth sinks in, August and several of the other young ones who become aware of it, too, are drawn into a growing rebellion.

As a huge fan of dystopian stories, THE ELECT was right up my alley. This was a powerful tale with a great cast of characters who had a fun dynamic among them, and I found myself rooting for August and his friends to succeed in their fight to free the rest of the children from the Foundation's control and to ultimately end the Foundation. Through all the twists and turns, I was hooked from start to finish, and I'm excited to read the sequel!

When he misses an essential shot, a Young One boy, August, begins to remember his past and is horrified by the terrible things he has done. He and three others break out and become involved in a coup to take back their country. Who can they trust? What conspiracies lurk around them?

This is a book I didn't hate but didn't love. Written in first person present tense, with random scenes in the third person present tense of a different character altogether, we follow August as he learns about the politics in his day. As a character, August is...alright. He is, as most YA Dystopian characters are, Important. He trusts people after talking to them once because something inside him says they are trustworthy. I did not relate to him in any way.

I think I may have enjoyed the story more without the romance. Elisa made little impression on me and I really didn't see any connection between her and August except for the fact that she was pretty.

The plot didn't seem to have a focus and the end is left open to lead into a sequel with no real answers to anything that had already happened.

Overall, it is a harmless Sci-Fi Dystopian for young adults.

The story:

Seventeen-year-old August is a weapon, a mindless tool of the government of Belstrana, helping to put down anyone who dares to question his President’s authority. Taught to fight since childhood, his free will is held at bay by injections of Crystal. One fateful night, he and three other teens miss their daily scheduled dose. Before long, they realize just how wrong the system is, and they seek to put it right … unfortunately, the government has eyes and ears everywhere.
