A terrific Western unlike any other you’ve read

Two men — Drake Travis, a fearsome butcher of men, women and children, and John Marsden, Drake’s mentor in all things vile and evil, come together to settle their animosity for each other in torture and blood. This book is very, very dark in scope and rich in debased humor. If these words give you pause, this is probably not the Western for you. If your tastes run to mayhem, jump right in to this fine novel.

Whew! Talk about genres I don't usually dive into! In fact, I just spent too much time trying to decide what genre I'd put it in. I'm going to go with Western but really that doesn't begin to sum up this book.

The Good: Holy visuals. Seriously. I have a pretty vivid imagination and more than once I had to close to book, take a few deep breathes and then dive back in. The fact that I did dive in speaks to the quality of the writing and storytelling. Each of the opponents was clearly thought out and the darkness that fueled their tales was clearly felt throughout the entire book.

The Bad: Hmm..I honestly can't come up with much. There was one part that I thought broke continuity but at the time I also thought perhaps I had somehow missed something during some tired reading. Even if it is the case, it wasn't enough to really disrupt the story. The same goes for a couple of editing errors that I found. You guys know that I tend to be picky about that kind of thing.

The Summary: If you like dark and violent, you're going to love this book. Seriously. If violence or gore bothers you, give it a pass. Honestly, that's all I can say other than to tell you to head over to Amazon and order your copy today.

To be fair, this isn't the type of novel that I typically read. Although I'm not averse to a good revenge story, I don't usually seek them out. And I'm not a big fan of westerns. But this book was recommended to me by a friend, so I gave it a read.

And it was good. It was very good.

Drake is the protagonist, and he's a terrible person. But he's no anti-hero. He's just a rotten guy who finds himself the prisoner of another rotten guy--just one with more money and power. He is given his gun with four bullets and left trapped in a town filled with five people who want him dead. He now has to struggle to kill them all or be killed and then go after his once-friend who put him there.

It's a dark story, and it's a violent one. And you are not likely to meet many characters that you will feel sympathetic to. But it works for that reason. This is a revenge story in the old west, and the characters are tough, dirty, and dangerous, and you come to want to find out if Drake can actually pull it off.

There is something about a novel with an unlikable protagonist, and it's that you can never be sure that the "good guy" will win because there is no good guy. Will Drake survive and kill all five opponents with just four bullets, or will Drake get what's coming to him?

Ultimately, I'm not sure any tears will be shed either way, but you will have a great time following Drake as he heads towards his destiny--whether for good or ill.
