This was a fun little read into why cats are basically....cats. I already knew most of what this book presented, but it was a nice refresher. I had never had cats until I was an adult (we were a dog family), so getting to know my two purrfectly adorable felines has been a journey! I wouldn't trade them for the world though <3

------------

As a mommy to two adorable and wonderful kitties, I am always on the lookout for cat psychology stuff because come on...cats are awesome.

Although this is a children's book, I was quite excited to read it as I am a total cat lover, and the behaviours of cats fascinates me. This book definitely delivered - written by Peter Scottsdale who is a self-confessed cat lover himself, it included all the information you could possibly want to know about cats, and answers more questions than you probably thought you had. Would highly recommend this to any cat owner. As for children, there are a few mentions of 'foreplay' when it comes to the mating ritual, which may present some tricky questions for parents!

Some interesting facts about cats: I especially liked the information about jumping and why cats land on their feet; but, it was repetitive in places and did not have enough detail. For example, there was a very interesting study released in 2010 about how cats drink (see http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/12/sci....)

Perhaps this book was intended for a young audience. I think it would be a good book for a child to read when getting a first cat or kitten.

Clearly written guide for children (and adults) explaining what makes a cat tick. Scottsdale organizes the book by asking and answering questions about feline physiology and psychology such as "How do cats communicate" to "How do cats express love."

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I love cats! This book answered a lot of questions I had concerning cats, like, how do they cool down on hot days and why our feral populations yowls so much! Interesting book with loads of info. Should be read by anyone thinking about getting a cat, but would make a nice gift for a young cat owner, as well.
I received a Kindle ARC in exchange for a fair review from Netgalley.

As a cat enthusiast myself, I knew I would love this book as soon as I saw the cover. It was very interesting and I learned a lot. Although I own three cats, I didn't know a lot of the science behind why they do what they do. Why does one of my cats drool when I pet her? Why do two of my cats who are brother and sister look completely different? Why does my cat headbutt me? Now I know. Great book!!

This review also appears here.

This is a good, fast read that explains everything you would want to know about a cat’s behaviour. The language is easy enough for younger readers, but not so simple that it won’t appeal to adults.

Recommended for people who have or who are thinking of getting a new cat.

I saw this book on Netgalley and immediately knew I had to read it. About nine months ago my family decided to get a cat, a beautiful little kitten we decided to call Billy. Billy always does things I never understand, and this book made everything a lot more clear - now I know that when Billy does something strange I can resort to this book and become more educated about why he does those things. This book is short and sweet; it doesn't give you hundreds of pages on one thing to the point where it's boring, it's more like having a blog post in chapters, which is a lot easier to read. I have done a lot of research about cats and still never understand them, but this book made it very clear. When I adopted a kitten I knew I'd have to learn more about cats (I've never had a cat from a kitten before!) and this book did exactly that for me. So, thank you, Netgalley for giving me this book. And thank you, Peter Scottsdale, for writing this book. I love how the book is formatted and how it is written, and how only the important facts are noted down. Afterall, you don't learn from large chunks of text; all you need are the most important things listed and that makes the book more interesting and helps you to learn better. I gave up looking for a book that would teach me about cats, but that was because I never thought I'd find a book so perfect: short and to-the-point. And I'm not deleting this book completely because I'm going to look back to it every time I need to understand something. It's important to understand your furry friend, and that's why I'm so glad this book exists. I tried to give it 4 stars but I just couldn't - there's nothing whatsoever wrong with this book! I can't fault it.

With cats being such mysterious and endearing animals, finding a book such as this for younger readers is truly wonderful. Encompassing many curiosities, Peter Scottsdale has answered questions about how a cat communicates, eats, drinks, shows emotion, procreates, gives birth and more. I was both fascinated and intrigued by how many details were provided about this delightful animal. Not only does the book stick to the facts, but it educates without treating the reader like they are absolutely clueless in reading the book to begin with.

As a former Veterinary Nurse, I was extremely impressed with both the quantity and quality of information which Peter Scottsdale has imparted in such an easy-to-read format, as both young and old alike can gain a wealth of knowledge about our feline friends. Each chapter starts with a question and is finalized with a statement, as if answering the question on a personal level, as opposed to the clinical feel which most educational textbooks tend to follow. I found myself smiling, thinking about the mannerisms of the two felines who run my household, while also nodding at how correct each detail was which I had read.

How Do Cats Do That is an essential addition to any pet owner’s library, and would also ideally be stocked in retail outlets of animal welfare organizations where adoption is the key. The more an owner knows about their new furry family member, the better off the whole family will be. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to cat lovers of all ages.

This is an easy-read but very interesting book about cats. It’s aimed at young readers but adults will enjoy it too as it’s clear and concise. It really does answer more or less any question you can come up with about cats, such as how they’re such good jumpers, how they see, how they purr, how they react to catnip and so on. These answers frequently take in a ‘why’ aspect too so give a very rounded response.
The author’s delight in cats and his expertise come over very clearly. It’s beautifully illustrated with lovely photos.
This is a book you can read in one go, or dip into every now and again when your cat does something you want to know more about.

I originally got this book to read to my four old grandson as his uncle has a cat and he was always asking questions about her. I ended up enjoying reading it to him as much as to myself. We both loved reading about fun and interesting things about cat behavior, especially about how cats and kittens play and communicate. In fact, we would read a section and then go and watch the cat to see what she was doing (besides sleeping!) It was especially fun when she would loudly and continuously meow when her master got home.
The book gave me many opportunities to talk about the behavior of our old cats and look up to read things she would do, too. Both my grandson and I loved the book!

If you always wanted to know how cats purr, drink water, keep clean, and more this is where you will find out! Of course, you will learn almost everything a cat does. The author explains the what, how and why. This is not a large book to read or explained in technical terms. Anyone can read this without explanation from a dictionary or any reference material. It's a fun book to read and learn about the cat!

It's a book about cats. It didn't get five stars because there were not enough cat pictures, but I did love it. I felt so much of what this book was saying. It talks a lot about how cats communicate and how they feel about us (humans). It would be good for someone who is getting a new cat or has never had a cat before.

*I was kindly given a copy by netgalley. All opinions are my own.*
As someone who is a cat lover this was very informational. It helped me with a current situation I have with a cat. This is also cute because you learn the stages of playing and also how cats view their owners.

***Some Content Not Appropriate For Young Readers***

This is one of the numerous cat books I have on my Kindle as is appropriate for one whose life has gone to them. The book format follows a Q-&-A format, with each entry being provided a title question. The following answer is then provided either in paragraph format of information or a list of step-by-step instructions on how cats complete that action. Each entry then ends with the small "refrain" if you will of "And that's how cats..." + whatever the name of that pages entry was.

The information otherwise is provided quite clearly and in an easy-to-understand style that makes the book rather informative but entertaining. Unfortunately, this format does mean some entries can be a bit too much, especially when it goes into details that some readers may not want details on.

All in all, it is still probably one of the best cat information books that is out there and will definitely answer some of your more burning questions. It does make me wonder what they chose to include in the other two books, though.

The Amazing Cat

This is an entertaining book about cats! I'm a cat lover and find them fascinating. I learned some things I didn't know. For example, when cats scratch furniture it is not to sharpen their claws but to slough off the old claws and bring forth the new claws! I like Scottsdale style of writing and want to read more of his books. Check it out for a good read.

Very informative for children and adults

This book has substance. I love cats and, as an adult, learned new things from this book. If a child likes cats, this would be a wonderful book to help them understand cats better.

[Note:  This book was provided free of charge by Books Go Social/Net Gallery.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.]

While I do not consider myself a cat person, or indeed a pet person of any kind so far in my life, I do at least have some curiosity about cats and the way that they are viewed [1].  This book, it should be noted, does not answer all of one's questions at cats, as it is only 50 pages long and most of those pages are mostly empty, but while some of us have questions about the process of domestication as well as the limits of adaptation that cats have that this book does not in any way answer, this book does at least provide just-so stories for the kinds of questions that many people would have about cats.  Perhaps most touchingly, the author offers the opinion that cats do not look down upon humans as they are reputed to do but rather consider human beings to be in a role similar to that of a mother.  By and large I found the writing to be infused with a genuine love for cats, and even if I'm not a cat person that counts for a good deal.

In terms of its contents, this book offers very direct and straightforward answers to a series of questions that involve cats and why and how they do what they do.  The author answers a variety of questions, each with the question marked at the top and ending with a statement like "And that's how cats ______."  This pattern is kept up through out the entire book, giving it a sense of consistency.  The following questions were answered:  How do cats communicate?  How do cats purr?  How do cats show love?  How do cats jump so high?  How do cats' tails work?  How do cats use their whiskers?  How do cats' nails get so sharp?  How do cats wash themselves?  How do cats see?  How do cats identify their owners?  How do cats view their owners?  How do cats play?  How do cats adapt?  How do cats fight?  How do cats protect themselves?  How do cats hunt?  How do cats pee?  How do cats spray?  How do cats mate?  How do cats give birth?  How do cats age?  How do cats keep warm?  How do cats cool down?  How do cats sleep?  How do cats drink water?  How do cats eat?  How do cats react to catnip?  How do cats land on their feet?  How do cats find their way home?  How do cats show pain?  How do cats get worms?  How do cats get ringworm?  How do cats get fleas and ticks?  How do cats get ear mites?  The book ends with a thanks to the reader.

While this is certainly an enjoyable book to read, it is not a perfect book.  For one, the book is hung up on questions of how, but not much detail is provided in most cases.  Many of the questions are answered with a short paragraph and there is a definite shortage of drawings or illustrations or detailed explanations of, for example, the bone and muscular structure that was created in cats that allow them to jump so high.  Likewise, it would appear that the author's methodological naturalism, which is not something that I particularly enjoy seeing in books, prevents him from asking questions of why.  Purpose questions are far more thought-provoking and deep than mere questions on mechanism, particularly when those questions are not answered with more than a brief note in many cases.  Yet there is still much in this book to enjoy and appreciate despite its limitations and the shortcomings of its approach to questions of adaptation and development, and it is obvious in reading this book that the author has a great love for cats, something that is useful when writing a book about them, or reading a book about them, for that matter.

I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I have to say, I love cats. I haven't owned any cats but I love them. They're adorable, they're sweet, and they're generally independent which I admire as an owner of a codependent dog. I've always loved learning more so when I was looking through NetGalley for my next read, I knew this would be perfect.

This book has a lot of really good information. I learned quite alot about cats which was exactly what this book was for. Unfortunately, my NetGalley copy had no photos which was a little upsetting.

All in all, it was good, it was informative but I would have loved to see the Cat photos as well.

Princess Fuzzypants here:
If you are looking for a straight forward book on cat behavior and mechanics, this is a good starter. There is nothing fancy about it and it is written in easily understood script. That being said, there was nothing new or exciting about it. I have read more interesting and involving books on cats but there is nothing wrong with this one.
I give it three purrs and one paw up.

This book was straight and to the point regarding your cat's behavior. I have often wondered why my tom cat nips at me, I now know that he is expressing affection. I would recommend this book to pet owners (cats). I think you will find lots of truth on the conduct of cats and find some interesting facts as well.

I love cats! So this book definitely caught my eye. For the experienced cat lover, this book won't shed much new light on cat behaviors, but this would be a good book for a young person or anyone new to sharing life with a kitty.

Thank you to Booksgosocial and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
