I had to abandon this book because my apartment sprung a leak and it was a toilet upstairs. This book took the brunt of the leak and will have to be disposed of as I don't think I can bring myself to handle a book that has been saturated by toilet water. My apologies to the author, publisher, etc. (It's a shame because it looked like a good read).
It was (for me) very practical. For anyone else who struggles with the intricacies of balancing life, time, and relationships, this book - through its four well developed chapters - helps break down the angst and anxieties.
The exercises and worksheets throughout the book is poised to help weed through the muddle and get you started on a very positive, productive, concrete plan.
The book has so many real life stories and then breaks it down to show you how to "fix the way you think or react". Reading through the stories, you may find yourself - or someone you know! - who fits the scenario, but it's easily adapted to fit something/someone in your life, as well.
Most self- help books I come across seem off the mark or difficult to relate or incorporate into your life, to alter your habits or attitudes. This book is a very useful tool for yourself - or an inspiring book to give to someone who seems "their life never seems to go right".
I loved it and recommended it to several people. And I may pick up a few more hard copies as gifts! (This is definitely more useful as a hard copy unless the exercises allow editing on an e-version.)
* I won this on a goodreads giveaway but my lengthy review is written on my valuable time and not influenced nor reimbursable *
If you are looking to read a book that will enhance your emotional intelligence and equip you with mindfulness tools, this is a very good book to read.
Halley starts with sharing how life can get so chaotic, we find ourselves in a rut and wonder how we can ever be straightened out to achieve a semblance of balance
She then shares successful strategies that she employs to nurture and sustain her inner life. They include mindfulness, healing negativity, elevating positivity, awareness, connection and nurturing
She provides activities and resources in this book that help the readers implement plans to sustain a healthy life
Favourite quote: “When we engage in life this way - attempting to gain self-worth and belonging through means outside ourselves-we are destined to fail.”
“Until we define who we are and what we are, we will remain the proverbial bottomless pit or a shape shifter, borrowing someone else’s identity in the hopes that we finally experience contentment.”
WOW!!! I am already on my second read of this book thanks to a compelling author and in-depth tools to accompany each section. I am at a crossroads in my career and am working through the Expression section which deals with locating how best to turn your passions and interests into more than just "ideas".
This author has a strong voice which I appreciate while also not taking herself, or the subject matter, too seriously. Thank you for writing a self-help book that can actually produce change!!
Variable. Some annoying ways of writing things e.g. Question? (Raises hand). The latter part of the book was better than the beginning (1 & 2 were not great). Quoted lots of people but few scientists which I thought was telling.
The general level of the book was too airy fairy for me which meant I didn't properly engage with what useful content there was. Others may be able to get past this more easily.
The overall premise of this book is good, but I'm pretty sure I was born on a different planet than Bock. Much of the work the book suggests is more relevant to people who are still working than a retiree such as myself. The section I liked best and was most relevant to my life was that on relationships. Her use of swear words detracted from the subject, the overall tone, and my respect for her as a voice of authority.
Overall I liked the layout of the book and the ideas the author shared. There was a lot of looking internally which I loved. I definitely got a much better idea on who I was and what I was looking for in life. Being a stay at home mom the parts about work didn’t really stick with me but I can see they may be helpful to someone else.
Good reminders, journal prompts, & food for thought. The author integrates her personal experience, Buddhist teachings, and studies from many well-known thought leaders. It was a good mix.
Life, Incorporated is a self-help book with a unique structure, that contains mostly the same information and exercises that you can find in similar books. If the structure is one that the reader finds engaging, it's a good book to use for a transformation. If the structure doesn't really fit, which is what I personally experienced, it's not as useful. I think public libraries would do well to purchase this book; there are plenty of readers looking for new avenues for self-improvement who would do well to check this book out.
**I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.**
I received this book for free through Goodreads Giveaways. As always, an honest review.
For me personally this book didn't resonate with me. It could resonate with and help other people. Self help books are so personal that it has to be the right fit for the reader, so I rarely dismiss a book in this genre for that reason alone. Just because this book wasn’t the right fit for me, doesn’t mean that no one else will benefit from it. There were some issues I had with the content though.
From the very beginning I noticed that the writing style was very straightforward, factual, and had the vibe of a go getter. For me that doesn’t really work in a self help book, but again some people with different personalities would like it. I felt that a lot of the book was the author stating the elements of having a whole hearted life and then explaining how this relates to her life. There were a lot of stories from her personal journey of life improvement. Some of the steps lacked adequate activities to complete this part of a person’s journey. The book tried to cover so much, so it ended up moving too quickly and not going into enough depth. After most explanations and examples of steps to take to improve one’s life, there were activities to be done as a sort of workbook activity. Some were helpful for me, while others didn’t really relate to my life. I did like the activities that helped me to identify my feelings in the moment. That’s something I will continue to use in my day to day life.
I LOVED this book. I was hesitant to read another book on how to improve my life but this nails it. Authentic, to the point and with a sensitivity that comes from getting more and more resilient from life's bumps. The writing style, the vulnerability of stories shared and mostly importantly, the practical, doable HOW TO actually foster a rich inner life so you're not at the mercy of life's external whims, rather building a solid internal ecosystem that keeps you rooted in who you really are, what you value and how to guide your life from there. Invaluable. I'm on my third read of it because each section is so rich, you can go back to it as a reference time and time again. It has helped to keep me connected with myself, the most important connection of all. Post-election trauma, this has been a lifeline. I travel with it in my bag lest I need to re-ground. Highly recommend it as a classic go to.
Life, Incorporated was just what I needed to read right now. Each chapter delves into a different part of life without being too complicated or intense. No matter your situation, any adult could benefit from reading this book. The exercises are incredible as well.
*NetGalley provided in exchange for an honest review.
Was fortunate to receive an early copy of this book, and am so grateful I did. It came at a time in my life when I actually was able to use it to help me through a difficult time. I have ordered several copies to give as holiday gift for friends who are at a crossroads in their lives.
I read the library's copy of this book and connected with it on so many levels that I am going to buy my own copy and get to work! This book is sprinkled with many meaningful quotes that are not a simple restating of verbiage from the text but extensions of the point made. Bock's humor and wisdom help guide the reader through a written process of discovering your authentic self while creating an awareness of life balance that reflect your unique values. Inspiring!
