In the fourth volume of the Day After Never series, Lucas and Sierra embark on a cross-country journey that takes them into the belly of the beast, where they must battle a ruthless adversary while the fate of their world hangs in the balance.
When an author creates a world I don’t usually mind what liberties they take with reality, but once it is in place I do expect them to keep to the reality they have created. The problem is the more I read the more uneasy I feel, the world that he has created just doesn’t make sense. Why of all the people that survived the virus are ninety percent of them are criminals, mentally deranged or megalomaniacs. Also the rate the author keeps killing people there couldn’t be that many left, we are hardly into the book and already another thousand have gone. In book three Magnus was able to pull together nearly a thousand Crew fighters to go and attack Shangri La. A few days later and the remnants of the Crew have over two thousand armed fighters. Where do all these criminals come from? Next we get a Naval destroyer turning up with yet another megalomaniac in charge, saying he is just a representative of an even bigger criminal group.
I’m afraid for me the books have just become a tedious blood bath perpetrated by crazed criminals.
You have to read all the books from the start to understand what is going on. Hoped for a good ending, but series didn't end with this one. Good didn't win over evil. One group still killing and trying for the world domination.
I still find the story interesting, but sometimes it feels like it’s just repeating itself over and over again. We got so many battles already, I want to see it go a different way now. We need the community to rebuilt, thrive.
Also the anti-government rants from all the characters are exhausting. I don’t disagree with them, but every single character goes on and on about it, same words and all.
I keep thinking I’m getting tired of this series and then of course they have to have that cliffhanger. So I just have to read the next one to see where it’s going to go. I liked this book better tan the last one in the series.
I started to read this book a couple of years ago and put it down, not sure why, but the I just forgot about it till the other day when I came across it. So I sat down and started over, it was slow going at first because aside the Lucas, Sierra and Duke whom I remembered right away, the others slowly became visible once again. I liked this 4th installment but now realize that it's not going to end there, I do hope it ends with the 5th, and Mr. Blake moves on from there. I like the author's contemporary actions stories rather than the dystopian novels. Mr. Blake is a very talented writer and he has shown that he is heads above the others in this genre, so now that this has been done, go back to what you do really, really, really well. I just stared reading the first few chapters of the Goddess Legacy, it grabbed my attention on the first page!
I would have rated this book a 5 except that it is a continuation of the first 3 books. Same characters, same dilemma, etc. Make no mistake, these are very good reads. They are well written. The story takes some clever twists and the action is always on the horizon. Some technical aspects are lacking a bit. Such as Diesel fuel going bad after 5 years. I watch some YouTube "will it start" videos where Diesel equipment that hasn't moved in 20 years still has usable fuel in the tank. Diesel fuel doesn't go bad like gasoline. Gasoline starts to turn bad in months. That is true.
I'm taking a break from the series but intend to stay with Russel Blake. Next up is the Jet series because I like bad ass women...
I struggled to finish this and I probably won't read any more. It's not that it's not well-written, but I just can't continue with this series. It's a "me" thing. The whole series is about our civilization that has deteriorated into Hell on Earth run by the most evil people you can't even begin to imagine and I know it's not "unicorns and rainbows" but I've had enough. Again, it's a "me" thing.
Every time something positive happens, 10 evil things happen, good people are killed in horrible ways and I just can't go on. Maybe some day I'll pick this up again.

It's a transition book. The Crew assaulted Shangri La in the previous book in the series, so now Luke and Sierra are setting out to rescue her son, and to get the vaccine to distribution points where it can be replicated and mass produced. Of course the bad guys intervene, and the new bad guys are appropriately mysterious and evil. Not as tightly written as the previous three but satisfying and enjoyable. It meanders some, which is unusual for a Russell Blake book.
After reading several books in this series, I was beginning to expect more of the same. This book, however, has brought in a new element into the storyline which makes me look forward to the rest of the series. I don't want to give it away for anyone reading this series except to say that the story got much more interesting. Can't wait to read the next one.
This 4th installment of Lucas' saga is just so so. Sorry Russell but it is becoming a little repetitive and kind of boring. I struggled to finish reading it. I normally finish a book in a week but this took me a month ... I am not even gonna bother to buy the other books at this stage. Spoil alert: with an introduction of the Illuminati characters the rest is the same old plot.
Book is not lining up or it is and just putting things in place for the next book. ... I am confused. . The time frame seems off. Could be me. But no... book two Tim was 7. In this book he is 10. Has three years passed? Is Sierra 25 now?
An action packed post apocalyptic thriller with a solid storyline and number of interesting characters contains an abundance of action. The technical aspects seem to be realistic and well researched. The MC is both likeable and capable. As in life, things don't always go as planned, and in this PA world even more so!
Great story and it started out great, however the last 2 books have been lacking content. I still enjoyed it, however I wanted more of the content I received in the first 2 books.
The folks from Shangri La have relocated to Colorado after battling The Crew at their hidden valley. Knowing the leader of The Crew would stop at nothing to kill them all to stop the production of a vaccine for the 2nd generation super flu they had no choice but to move. The Crew has had a change in leadership due to demise of Magnus. Snake is trying hard to claim the title by dispatching any opposition. And, Lucas is making good on his promise to help Sierra find her son, if he is still alive.
Blake’s fourth novel in The Day After Never series, Retribution, is full of new unknowns and new powerbrokers lending to a fast-paced story full of action. The story is bigger than just that of Lucas.
The entire world is at stake and there are those working behind the scenes to push their agenda. This book is to me the best one of the entire series. I can’t wait until the next installment is published.
I enjoyed the first two books more. This book was entertaining but I started to get annoyed with the female character. The male character is still a tough guy and a$$ and I enjoyed his story.
More of the saga about Lucas and Sierra. Enjoyable if getting a little repetitive. Looking forward to learning more about our heroes backstories, and what their weaknesses are.
You wouldn't want to live in a post apocalypse world
I do want to be a Texas ranger when I grow up. Lucas is quite the hero. I'm hooked on the series and will read them all. Quite grim, but interesting. The one annoyance to me is the Sierra character. I'd like to slap her.
This was the forth book in an audio download on audible. If you haven't checked it out, that is a great way to get into the series. Again, it ends in a cliffhanger of sorts and is quite frustrating but the story is great and the characters are still a great draw to the story.
So, lots of sermons on the nastiness of human nature and how warlords are no worse than elected government. And I’m beginning to be bored by it all. The series continues but I’m out. Still...good action/adventure.
Solid 3.5 stars. You need to read the first 3 in the series to understand the characters, etc. The secondary character (Sierra) will drive you crazy throughout the series, but without her stupidity, we probably wouldn't have a story. Nothing new here, but not bad overall.
The first four books are a great continuation of the previous ones. I can't wait to get into book five. I won't have to wait too long because I have that one too.
Terrific series-most characters fully fleshed out, plot lines believable, action exciting. Really good stuff-and I read lots of apoc lit, this is right up there with the best
I am so glad I started reading this series. I love all the characters and stay up all night just about reading it. Thank you, Russell Blake for writing it. I can’t wait to start the next book
just finished #4 and purchased #5. storyline is still the same with old characters moving in and out and new characters being added seamlessly into the story. I'm not really into westerns but am enjoying this.
