Murder investigation is tricky--especially when the deceased threatens to kill you...
Former medical student turned FBI special assistant Amanda Meyer isn’t thrilled about her new gig as a ghost whisperer, especially now that she has the spirit of a departed drag queen following her around.
But having a pal on the other side may just come in handy when a billionaire’s widow meets her untimely demise and Amanda and her oh so sexy boss, Rick Rowling, head of the Paranormal Cases Division, are called in to find the killer.
With nine scandalous suspects, nine questionable motives, one dead witness and one cryptic clue, the bureau’s dynamic duo should be able to solve this case by the numbers, but the victim’s restless soul wants revenge while the clock is ticking. What’s the girl nicknamed The Grim Reaper to do? M may be for Murder, but W is for Wicked.
W is for Wicked is part of the Paranormal in Manhattan Mystery series. If you like fast-paced mysteries full of quirky characters and unexpected twists, you're gonna love this book.
Paranormal in Manhattan Mystery Series Each book in the series is a stand-alone story, but your enjoyment of each story will be increased if you read them all.
W is for Wicked by Lotta Smith is the second book in her Paranormal in Manhattan series that was even more fun to read than the first book. Now Mandy can see ghosts and is beginning to develop a friendship with Jackie, a drag queen who was murdered. I loved Jackie! She's smart and funny and she drools over Rick which caused some laugh out loud moments during the story.
Quickly paced with plenty of suspects and a twist at the end that I didn't see coming. I'm waiting impatiently for the next book in this series.

Amanda Meyer worked for the FBI. Previously, she and her boss, Rick Rowling, Head of NY Paranormal Cases Division, were walking in Tribeca when Mandy spotted a Broadway actor and drag queen, Jackson Orchard. The strange thing was that only Mandy could see Jackie! And he wanted her to solve his murder! The facts of the case he gave her were verified, so Rick saw major potential in this new skill where the FBI could solve all sorts of cases!
Marcus, the butler of the McCambridge mansion, heard the maid scream. He found Madame Giselle at the foot of the stairs, bleeding. He sent the maid to call an ambulance, while Madame Giselle wrote a ‘W’ in his palm with her blood. She asked him to find whoever pushed her down the stairs. Before she would tell him what ‘W’ meant, she gasped and died! He was left with a little problem with his clue to the murderer – everyone in the mansion at the time of the murder, 9 people, had a ‘W’ in one of their initials, including Marcus!
As Mandy is called into another case for the FBI, she tries to communicate with a dead child. Jackie is sticking around and advising her on how to get the child to communicate. Once they got the full story from the child, the FBI was able to track down the truck that hit him and the driver confessed. This ghost whisperer talent really was working for them! But Mandy was feeling traumatized by such a young victim and wanted a transfer to another division. Unfortunately, her superiors liked her right where she was. Amidst implied threats and manipulation, they convinced her to stay and put her on the unsolved McCambridge case. Now things would heat up! The killer would be a surprise to all!
This was the first book I started with in this series. The quirky mysteries can be humorous and enjoyable as the reader follows the fast action story line. But the people Mandy works with in the FBI quickly annoyed me with their manipulation of her. And I was annoyed that she went with the flow and didn’t do the right thing for herself, letting them push her around. Anyway, once the major case came up, it got interesting as the victim was set on revenge. I also thought it was a good plot device to keep the ghost, Jackie, working with her. Although Mandy could converse with the ghosts, Jackie was an actual ghost and had a better rapport and way of communicating. And it allowed further comical interactions in the story. I think if you want something fun, this is a good series to pick up and read. I voluntarily read a review copy of this book and my comments reflect my honest opinion.
This is a great book; this is the second book in the Paranormal in Manhattan series written by Lotta Smith. Former medical student turned FBI special assistant Amanda Meyer isn't thrilled about her new gig as a ghost whisperer, especially now that she has the spirit of a departed drag queen following her around. But having a pal on the other side may just come in handy when a billionaire's widow meets her untimely demise and Amanda and her oh so sexy boss, Rick Rowling, head of the Paranormal Cases Division, are called in to find the killer. This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. This book will keep you reading long into the night. If you are looking for a great book, then you need to read this book. I am looking forward to reading the next book by this great author.
Great fun mystery. Clean with great banter-between the characters .i was disappointed rick didn't tell Mandy the exorcist's secret, cause it had to be a juicy one. I love mystery who done its because you don,t who until the end.if you like the supernatural and the unexplained with good hearted and witty sarcasm with a tease of a possible romance, then this book is for you
When the FBI's personal Ghost Whisperer, Amanda Meyer, is called to the scene of a high-society matron's death from a fall down the stairs, you know there's a who-dunnit to solve. When said Ghost Whisperer is attended by the spirit of a snarky drag queen, you know there will be smiles and laughter involved. When Amanda's boss, uber-sexy, uber-rich Rick Rowling keeps inviting himself to Amanda's parents' home for meals, you know there will be all kinds of sparks flying. When . . . But you get the idea. I LOVED this book.
We are back with Amanda Meyer and her sexy boss Rick Rowling. In this story the two of them are tasked with discovering the murderer of Madame Giselle. She has been found at the bottom of her grand staircase. With the help of Amanda's ghost friend Jackie (a drag queen that was murdered) it won't take long to discover what really happened. The twist at the end was unexpected. I voluntary reviewed an advanced copy of this book
Mandy's new ability to talk to ghosts is proving both a blessing and a curse. She is part of the FBI paranormal investigations group and it is a challenging endeavor. Mandy's and Rowling's interactions are fun and can only get to be more interesting as time goes on. This book was so much fun to read, I had trouble putting it down. Hope that Jackie stays around for a while, she is so funny. Totally recommend this book to mystery lovers. Cannot wait for the next book in the series to come out.
Quick fun read, although mentioning Stephanie Plum and Joe Morelli in the first page really threw me off. It's more of a cozy mystery than anything else.
I absolutely LOVED this book!!! The ending was excellent and I didn't expect all that came together for the killing of Giselle McCambridge! Very, VERY, unexpected! I think this story is out of this world plot worthy and deserves MORE than 5 stars!!!
What a blast!! A suspenseful and fun who done it - kind of reminded me of the game Clue :) I absolutely love the banter between Amanda and Rick - the underlying currents between those two - electrifying - love hate thing going on there I am going to have to go back to the beginning of the series to find out how everyone got where they are - I have lots of questions I received a free copy of this book and chose to leave a voluntary review
I did enjoy this book. A wealthy woman is found dead that the foot of the stairs in her mansion and although most would have thought it an accident, she was adamant it was murder, and tells the butler so with her dying breath. Mandy and her handsome sexy boss are called in to investigate. There are twists and turns to this tale and it held my interest throughout the story and did not disappoint in the end. Yes, 5 stars I think. I received this book in exchange for an honest review
Mandy, is a clutsy, bumbling, "it just happened", kind of girl who was pushed into being a FBI agent for the paranormal division by big, chunky Rick. As she helps Rick solve weird cases, she almost always accidentally causes more problems then either one needs. As two people with different backgrounds his ego and her snark hints to a romance that know doubt will also be dangerous, involve more than murder, ghosts and love.
Once again the author has produced a light, quirky story. There's not a lot of character development or complexity, and the surprise twist is more of a "gotcha" than the result of obscure clues, but the story is fun and worth the time invested. I look forward to more in this series.
she sees and talks to ghosts now and it helps her job as an assistant to an unusual FBI agent. an elderly but wealthy woman insists her tumble down the stairs was not an accident. .who killed her?
I purchased a copy of this book at the current price. I am voluntarily providing an honest review in which all opinions are fully my own. I am not being compensated in any way.

What it’s about…
Rick Rowling is the head of the FBI’s Paranormal Cases Division in NYC. His assistant is Mandy. That’s Amanda Meyer, who’s been bribed to work with him with a regular paycheck to pay off her student loans. Rick is 6’2″, sexy with green eyes and heir to USCAB, a highly successful security empire. He’s also outrageous, egotistical, and a smart-ass and no one else will work with him.
Mandy has a ghost of her own that follows her around to “help” her. Sort of a guardian ghost. Name of Jackie, or to be exact Jackson Frederick Orchard. He or she as she prefers it was a drag queen and she is always willing to help out Mandy and Rick on their cases.
Their current case being the death of Madame Giselle Carolynn Axtell McCambridge, 76 years old, and now standing watching all the proceedings of her murder investigation. At least she’s insisting it’s a murder investigation at the top of her ghostly lungs in Mandy’s ear. Mandy’s the only one who can see her. Well, Mandy and Jackie.
Can Rick and Mandy resolve this to Madame’s satisfaction?
Technical Tidbits…
The cover is Ms. Smith’s stylized black, yellow, and purple graphics artwork, which is so eye-catching. I really like the way she has used it throughout this series.
The storyline is good. It’s one that I’m sure many of you have read before in other books. It’s a plot that lends itself well to the treatment Ms. Smith has used here with the ghosts.
The characters were well developed. We know Rick and Mandy from the previous book. And now we have Jackie tagging along. We know Madame as a type, especially by her actions and attitudes. The other characters are kept quite shadowy as they are more or less suspects in the murder.
The pace, for the most part, is pretty good. There were a few places where I felt it might hit a snag, but it picked up again.
The tension was consistent throughout once you got to the main death scene.
And this is where you STOP if you don’t want to see any SPOILERS…
The good, the bad, and the ugly…and how much it lit up my life… ✰✰✰✰⭒
I found the death of Adam in the beginning rather distracting and very sad. It seemed to be senseless. It had nothing to do with the murder and it didn’t lead to anything. And yet, here we have a young male ghost now.
I really like Jackie as a sidekick for Mandy. I think once she gets used to having her around she’ll be really useful and she’ll be someone on her side! I’m really looking forward to seeing these relationships develop. Rick and Mandy are certainly going somewhere. No matter how bad things get, you just know he’s going to swoop in and rescue her like her very own superhero. So I guess he can be as egotistical as he wants as long as he takes good care of Mandy. It keeps the books upbeat and fun to read. It’s why I keep adding them to my Kindle. Now, if I could just do them in order, I think I’d be okay.
The resolution of this case was very systematic. They worked through everybody’s secrets and came up with the illegitimate daughter and a prank gone wrong in shoes too large. Hmmm. Do you buy it? Would the FBI agree to cover it up? Well, it’s a cozy and it’s magical, so sometimes you have to stretch it a bit.
This book is just a hoot! Since the first book in the series, Amanda Meyer, the new assistant to Rick Rowling of the Paranormal Cases Division of the FBI has acquired the ability to see and speak to ghosts. By the beginning of W is for Wicked she has also acquired an apparently permanent ghost companion, a murdered former drag queen who calls herself Jackie and has declared herself Mandy’s guardian angel.
The three of them are called in to help the NYPD solve the case of a supposedly murdered head of a prominent family. The victim’s sister has threatened to bring in a prominent psychic medium to reveal the killer, hoping the victim’s adopted son and heir will be implicated somehow so that she can inherit everything. To prevent this, the police are prepared to bring in an exorcist to get rid of the ghost before the medium can get there if Mandy can’t solve the case first.
The case is finally solved, mostly by Mandy talking with the ghost, although they have to do a small amount of experimenting with the various people who were in the house at the time of the murder coming up behind the ghost (she was pushed from behind) to get at the truth. There are a couple of interesting twists in the case itself, not least of which is that the ghost matriarch, who began by being as intimidating as a ghost as she had apparently been in life, suddenly softens up and begin to act human (fine time, after she is already dead).
But it almost doesn’t matter whodunnit, or why. The point of this book is the freaky back-and-forth dialog between all the characters, ghostly and not. And the hints of a developing romance between Mandy and her boss.
I love the dynamic between Mandy and Rick. I think more of us could use a Rick in our lives. The story of an upper Eastside (I think I have that right) heiress who died from being pushed down the stairs is both touching and extremely sad, especially since she doesn't realize she's dead. But above all, the comedy shines through.
This is an easy quick read, and while there are some typos and grammatical errors, they are few enough to be overlooked (however, if the book is updated, I'd expect to see them corrected). I'd like to see the stories longer, as well, although, this makes a nice, quick afternoon read when one is looking for a good distraction. It's definitely fun and entertaining.
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
This story about a girl named Mandy who can c dead people working as fbi assistant to guy name rowling in the paranormal dept of the fbi. Not too exciting, your usual who done it story, but with dead people who hasn't cross over ,who helps her find out who killed them . Not enough excitement , could use a little more thriller to it, the only good part is when u think u know who did it , I was surprised. But still needs a little more plot or something to it im not a writer, but as a person who loves to read, this writer need more imagination or something, she's there but not quite got it yet.
These are very short easy reads lacking in any real depth for the characters or the story. I want to know more about Amanda's bizarre and interesting 'Grim Reaper' powers that brought her to Rick's attention but they don't make any appearance. Instead she randomly develops the ability to see and speak to ghosts out of nowhere and that is her power now. And although the premise and the paranormal elements are different it has a bit of an amateurish Steph Plum fan fic flavour which may or may not be intentional as the author is obvs a fan given the actual reference to Steph Plum in this book.
The FBI's paranormal investigation crew has a house full of possible perpetrators when a cantankerous madam and matriarch is found dead on the staircase and money thickens the plot with plausible motives. The question is whether is was an accident or an actual murder or both. Toss in a few paranormal pranks and you have an unusual circus of events with some character quirks that give the story merit.
W is for WTF as in What the Fuck?!! PI agent Amanda Meyer and Rick Rowling are hired to investigate a murder of a high society millionaire widow named Giselle. Since Amanda is the only one who can talk to dead people, the FBI relies on her to crack this case. The only other option is to hire a psychic medium. But then Amanda ends up foiling Aurora the sorceress' plans ... dun dun dun dun.
I loved every single book Lotta Smith has ever written. This series is suspenseful and well written. The story line grabs hold of you and you just can't put it down until it's finished . I was left asking for more. Mandy, Rick, and Jackie are out and about when they hear a child asking for help. It is all about the rescue and how it is done!. Suspenseful, fascinating, and intriguing.
Amanda and her paranormal FBI agent/boss Rick are asked by the NYPD, to help solve the murder of a Billionaire's widow. They have to sift through 9 suspects, 9 motives, interview the dead witness and figure out one cryptic clue. Good thing Amanda can talk to ghosts. Enjoy this series!
I enjoy reading a copy of women writer's but I will now add Ms. Smith to the list. I'm not a big fan of the paranormal but Ms. Smith did an excellent job of bringing mystery and suspense together for an enjoyable change to my usual reading. well done!
Awesome! Now not only does she have the moniker of Grim Reaper but also the Ghost Whisperer. Can they use her gift to find the killer? Plenty of humour in the banter and a good solid plot. A wonderful paranormal cozy.
This was another winner. She writes great characters and good storylines. I highly recommend all her books to all who love cozy mysteries. Diana Romano
Mandy Myers sees ghosts and can communicate with them. Makes an interesting story, which flows well with interesting characters. I enjoyed it and will start he next book in the series.
I loved this book. It is a simple short cozy paranormal mystery that had me laughing out loud as I read it. I thoroughly enjoyed Rick and Amanda and how they played off each other. It was a fast fun read.
