When a South Florida golf club is hit with a series of suspicious events on the eve of hosting a big tournament, there’s only one man to call.
Miami Jones.
But when a caddy goes missing after an altercation with Jones, Miami finds himself in the middle of the case, not just solving it.
Miami must navigate billionaire property developers engaged in a high-priced tit-for-tat, death threats and a state investigator who is interested in his girlfriend in a professional capacity and maybe more—to keep himself, the club and the great state of Florida well and truly out of the deep rough.
A.J. Stewart has lived in so many places it feels like he has a home team in every game he sees. Which explains why his wife begins any sports telecast with "who are going for today?" A.J. and his family currently spend their time in Los Angeles and South Florida, but stay tuned, anything could happen.
This is the sixth book in A.J. Stewart’s series about South Florida private investigator Miami Jones. Usually centered around some kind of sport, Deep Rough takes Miami back to the country club where his friend and partner, Ron Bennett, is a member.
South Lakes County Club is about to host a major PGA Golf Tournament when a series of incidents happens. The worst is when Miami and his girlfriend, Danielle, are there for a wedding, and at the same time, almost all the members of the wedding party are suddenly violently ill. One of the greens is also damaged, and a groundskeeper is missing.
Afraid of having to cancel the tournament once the local health department sweeps in, the Club hires Miami to investigate alongside the police. This takes him not only through the world of professional golf but also through land development in South Florida and elsewhere.
“The PGA Tour is a tax-exempt organization, like the NFL. Billions of dollars flow through them, but they don’t pay taxes on most of it. And many of the tournaments themselves are run by charitable foundations.”
The mystery here is decent. I don’t think there was any way to really figure it out early on, although I had suspected the right person from the start. Stewart manages to plant enough red herrings that just about anything seems possible until all is revealed.
I love these characters. They feel like family! Not only that, Stewart's research into things like grass on a golf course is fascinating. I think if I were to nit-pic my only negative comment would be that the conclusion felt rushed. This could probably have been a much longer book or two books. But that's a minor glitch overall and it is probably artist's interpretation. Yes, I have already recommended this book to another person. Thanks again for several hours of fun and entertainment - and education - Mr. Stewart.
A cross between Laurence Sanders ( with his food descriptions) and Robert Parker ( with his self deprecation). Miami Jones is a modern day man who isn’t as annoying as most men writers who tend to always describe woman’s breasts for no other reason then to talk about them. Woman writers don’t seem to talk about a man’s penis size because ,why ? Anyway I now can impress my husband by saying “put some heat on it”when describing how to throw a fast ball ( in baseball ) and all that golf talk well that’s over my head , but I might be able to slip in “he was over par.”Whatever that is. The stories are great and enjoyable and Danielle seems like a very fleshed out character and the religious secretary is too dang funny. Do yourself a favor read the series I know I am enjoying them and have laugh out loud moments when the writer is doing comparisons when describing how he feels the character sees things. Read on !!
I found this book through BookBub and chose it because I have a thing for books set in Florida and I love golf. I've never lived there but the state must be filled with nuts, crooks, more nuts and really old people.
While not as whacky as some Florida writers, there were a couple of laugh out loud moments. But the writing is strong and Miami and Danielle are engaging, intelligently written. The plot carried me right along and I'll be back for more.
My only disappointment is this is #6 and now I have to go back to #1 knowing what's ahead...But I know I'll enjoy the reads.
A. J. Stewart has written a fascinating, complex, completely enjoyable mystery that had me guessing most of the way through about the name of the bad guy. Just when I thought I knew the identity, I was distracted by other misleading evidence or clues. That the story took place at a golf tournament in Florida, had an alligator munch on someone, and included interesting believable characters made it even more enjoyable. The forward momentum was constant and excellent, I lived in the book, and the story came to a satisfying resolution, making this a five-star book in my estimatjon.
A big PGA event is coming to South Lakes Country Club where Ron is a member. It will draw the top golfers. Certain parties do not want the event to succeed and there are lots of people to choose from. And plenty of Govt agencies too, when a new virus is found there. Miami Jones is hired to investigate, because that is what he does best. He also takes on a side job, which you can read about yourself. As with the previous 5 Miami Jones adventures, plenty of action and humor.
This book, keeps Miami a little closer to home. A local Golf Course has a Tournament but, not all goes as planned. Mysteries about and a 'Who Done It' muddles up the whole Tournament. Miami gets dragged into the situation, to find out, what happened! An EPIC read, weird characters galore. A book, the reader won't want to put done, until the AWESOME ending!!!
Being an ardent golfer and member of a few Country Clubs most of my life, the "story line" intrigued me! Once the plot unfolded,I found this yarn just too repetitive and frankly boring! The author certainly was right on with his information and attitudes shown in the putting on a PGA tour event, but I just couldn't get through most of this wordy narrative.
The story is set in Florida at a PGA Tour event so there are a lot of golf terms and rules but they are all clearly explained. There are old grudges, scams, unhappy real estate developers, and even a murder for Miami to solve. I could have done without the norovirus description but it is integral to the story. A great read.
Its about time ! Danielle asking Miami to tell her not only that he will marry her but when was awesome. And there was Miami thinking his true live was over. I love this series ! I've all ready told my book club that we should read this series. I will gladly reread all the books!
Another great book featuring MJ and the usual characters. A little deeper and not quite as much action, but it shows the author can really work a story and diverse a little. I loved it!
This book had a lot of information about golf. I don’t know anything about the game. I thought I would be bored with it but it actually inspired me to learn more about it. I don’t want to ruin anything so I’ll just say that I loved the ending. Can’t wait to see what Miami has to say...
It is always good to visit with Miami and his friends. This was a good story - would have been better if I was a golf fanatic, but even so, I didn't know who the bad guy was until he was revealed. AND, it was interesting to glimpse into the lives of pro golfers.
Good story, good characters, but didn't care for the condensed here's-how-we-solved-the-case summary ending. Maybe it's just me, but those kind of endings disappoint me. Still enjoyed the 6th Miami Jones tale. On to the next one!
This series of books are not only entertaining but, educational. This time I learned about the workings of th PGA and had a class on the different types of grass used on golf courses. Our hero delves deep into his own life learning some important life lessons!
Another exciting romp in a deservedly successful series. Narrator is a pleasure to listen to, he adds a feeling of fun and seriousness. As always the plot is complete and there is a “hint” of future novels.
I've loved Miami from the first pages of the first book. That's not to say the other characters fall short because I wish I knew a few of them in real life. We all need and should by our 40's have a friend like Ron who knows what kind of car we should drive. Are you a Porsche or a Cadillac? We all deserve a relationship where our work is understood and appreciated like Danielle. I'd love to have a Sally to be my white board who throws light on what I already know but don't always focus on. A Lizzy to do our research and pray for us when we push the limits. These characters reflect our lives and hopefully what we have but don't always recognize in the people we surround ourselves with. You'll love them like you love the people they represent in your own life.
Not a huge golf fan but I learned a few things. The suspense and mystery ever present surrounding Miami didn't fail in this book. Always pleased to have baseball thrown in the mix! Alligators not so much but just like the facts on grass you've been more educated while entertained.
I'm patiently waiting for the next book. Wedding bells? How's the Caddy drive? Why is Miami the front man of Lenny's business and not Ron? A.J. Stewart continues to leave me in suspense.
