I was really hoping this would turn out to be a trilogy instead of just two books. I loved this story that much. I wanted more. Oh well. I honestly couldn't put this book down, but had to when things like work got in the way. I started reading it at breakfast, read it all through lunch at work, and finished it as soon as I got home.

Like the author's 6 book IQ series, this one also has some very bad people that will stop at nothing to get what they want. And if that means killing people, so be it. I really enjoyed the idea of this whole community that lived hundreds (thousands?) of feet below New York City, where most of the inhabitants hadn't been above or seen the sky in 25+ years. They didn't trust the government and believed they were ruining the environment. So they removed themselves and set up their own version of utopia. But was it really a community, or a utopia? Or was it a cult with a megalomaniac obsessed with power and vengeance as their leader?

The bonus for me were all the locations in this book. The story starts in Portland, OR (the author lives just outside of Portland and I live an hour and a half south), then travels down the Oregon coast stopping at state parks and towns along the way and ending up in the California redwoods. I've driven that route up and down highway 101 more times than I could count, in fact I just camped in my trailer all along the OR coast last August. Every place the characters stopped or had lunch or camped for the night were familiar to me. It really made the story come much more alive for me when I could completely visualize every location.

Students who loved either the author's IQ series or the Storm Runners series will definitely enjoy this one.

This book continues the story of Pat and Coop. This takes place after the first book when they are on the run from the people of the deep. They have to figure out how to hide in plain sight while also saving their friends from L.O.D (The Lord Of the Deep).

A fantastic book which follows his "Beneath." I couldn't put it down! I might add a "thank you" to the author for making this just a 2-volume set. It was perfect!

Coop, Kate, and Pat are on the run from Lod and the Originals as they make their way from New York to the West Coast. What awaits Lod is the Deep 2.0 which has been in the planning stage for years. Once there, Lod plans are to take out the United States Government and live in a self-sustained underground city, much like the one he had in New York, although this one will be highly technologically advanced.

Kate, Coop, and Pat are trying to thwart his evil plans, but are in danger every step of the way. Along the way, they find friends who are enemies, and enemies who are friends. Some key people will defy Lod, yet his followers are loyal and willing to do anything to stop others from squashing their plans.
Above is a sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat thriller which would make a great movie. My only criticism would be the lengthy wordiness to get from New York to California and the convenient, contrived ending.

Everything was good until page 214. The misteries were being revealed and the dots were being connected. The next chapter was packed with plot, but after that, the antagonist began to become more cartoony every 2 pages. The final third of the book was the worst part. The climax was like 2 pages long. For no explained nor elaborated reason, Carl became a divine saviour. The triumph of the good guys and dismantling of The Deep was like 5 lines. The aftermath was EXTREMELY rushed. The entire last third felt rushed to be honest.

A third book should have been the way to go. Lawrence deserved better than this cheap treatment. His plan was interesting and worth seeing... it got destroyed in an instant.

Adding to this that every character spoke in the same (obnoxious) way, with smug one-liners, this is not a good book. 3 stars because the suspense was good, and only the last third was bad, and rushed.

Well written, but felt like a very familiar story. I appreciate the message that we are too dependent on technology (as I sit here and type this review on my phone...)

Do you like adventure? Do you like books with lots of suspense and action? Then I recommend you try Above! At first, I honestly didn’t expect the book to be as awesome as it was because the plot did not seem to be interesting enough to be enjoyable. It seemed like the protagonists were just going to meet the antagonists and fight, so I was excited when the plot started to get interesting. I recommend this book to teenagers around 12-13 years of age because this book is a little more intense than some younger kids would like.
Above is a book about three teenagers, Pat O’Toole, his brother Coop, and Kate, a girl who has lived underground her entire life. Kate’s parents were murdered by her grandfather, who was named Lawrence at birth, but changed his name to Lod (Lord of the Deep). Lod is trying to gain power by killing all the leaders of the world above ground. Kate suddenly disappears and Coop, Pat, and Alex, a librarian who used to work for Lod, find out she has been kidnapped by Lod and his team. Although Kate acted relaxed and happy with Lod, she was trying to escape, leaving clues behind for the others to follow. Then things turn for the worse when Lod finds out that Kate has been lying to him. Lod plans to kill her for her disobedience. Then Alex goes missing, and when Pat and Coop find him, all three of them are trapped by Lod and his group. Will they escape Lod’s evil grasp? Or will they be killed before they can escape his team?
I rate this book 4 stars because even though it has lots of excitement and suspense, the main characters don’t have a big enough backstory, at least in my opinion. Since each part of the book it is exciting in its own way, I couldn’t really find a favorite part, but I mainly enjoy the situations where they try to escape from Lod.

**SPOILERS FOR BENEATH**

Summary
Pat, Coop, and Kate have escaped from the underground community run by Kate’s genius grandfather, Larry but the People of the Deep (PoD) are evading the FBI. Their cult-like population is on the move and Kate is the only one who can recognize their masterful disguises. Kate follows the PoD to figure out what they're up to, but when she gets caught she has to pretend she is still loyal to her grandfather and stay with them. She leaves notes for Pat and Coop to follow. Will they find the notes and succeed in taking down Larry and his people before their master plan is put into action? Find out in Above.

Opinion
I did not enjoy Above as much as Beneath. It had some good action and interesting twists, but it lost that as the book progressed. The first half was exciting and engaging, but the story became flat and everything went well for the protaganists after that. The “big ending” was supposed to be powerful and thought-provoking, but it just made me feel “eh.” *hence the 3 stars* It was written well and had some great ideas. The writing was good, too, and it tied things up for the series. However, it left much to be desired in the final pages and did not live up to its potential.

Here's a birthday blog from me to you (yes, I am blogging on my birthday!)

After finishing Beneath with my students as a read aloud they begged me to read the sequel. Two students went to their local library to get the book that very evening. We then plowed through this gripping sequel, Above by Roland Smith. The story of Pat, Coop, and Kate continues as they attempt to stop the Pod, led by their devious masterminded leader, Lawrence Oliver Dane.

In their attempt to figure out just what Lod is trying to do, their quest is altered when Kate gets caught and now Pat and Coop have to try to save her from the evil organization. Without spoiling anything, I will say this book had my students on the edge of their seats and begging for more each and every day.

Roland Smith does a great job ratcheting up the suspense and the action in the most well crafted way. The climax of this adventure is fast paced and gripping in the best of ways. I will also say that the last page of this story almost made me cry. That's odd to say for an adventure story, but Smith wraps up this story in the absolute best way possible.

The end of this story was heartbreaking. Not because the events inflicted emotion and I felt myself sobbing uncontrollably (that didn't happen at all), but because it was such a huge letdown. After devouring "Beneath" I began to fly through the pages of this book, all the while thinking "Oh my gosh, oh my gosh this book is incredible. This is one of the greatest series I've ever read. There are fifty pages left, there is no way it can all be wrapped up. I can't wait for the sequel. Now there are thirty pages left, still, no way to wrap it up, sequel sequel sequel. Twenty pages, sequel!!!! Fifteen pages left, let's cram a bunch of crud in really quick and destroy this series on the spot. Why??????? It didn't need to be rushed, I want more.

I can't remember the last time I've been so excited about a book. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time and the concept behind it was unique beyond belief. I guess the fact that I want more proves how great the book is, but at the same time, it took so much away to know it is over and it was wrapped up so quickly.

This was such an amazing book...it always managed to keep me guessing. I really would have loved to see what the author would have done with the characters in a third book.

The story picks up where the first book left off, so I would recommend reading that one first. Coop O'Toole his brother Pat and Kate are on the run, with the help of Alex. They are on the run from people that live in the shadows. Most importantly though, their leader is Kate’s grandfather, Lod. It stands for Lord of the Deep since that's where they all live, and where Kate grew up. This is her first time out of the deep. In the previous book, we find out that the Deep is planning something that will be catastrophic for humanity and the planet. However, Coop, Kate, Pat, and Alex know they did not prevent what the Deep was planning, they just postponed it. Now they must find the location of their new hideout and stop whatever it is that they are planning before it’s too late.

Above continues the story told in a Missouri Mark Twain award nominee Beneath. This was an excellent adventure and a compelling story. That's what Roland Smith does best. In fact, Beneath was so good that I immediately ordered the sequel, Above, for my library and for me personally. It was a lot of fun to read them back to back. This second book wasn't quite as good as the first, but it was another great adventure and well worth reading.

As frequently as Hollywood pillages middle grade and YA lit for movie ideas, I can hardly believe Roland Smith's books haven't been made into movies. They sure are fun. They have great characters, fast pacing, and intriguing adventures. Come to think of it, maybe there's not enough angst in Smith's books for Hollywood. Maybe that's why I like him so much.

Ok, this one isn't as good as it's predecessor. But that's alright because it still is a satisfying conclusion to a one of a kind adventure. Pat, Alex and Coop are all together throughout most of the events of the plot and it helps the plot move forward with each place the three go. The book also uses Kate as a narrator in order to give readers a dramatic irony by providing insight on the pod's activities. This is good for female readers because a female character has a front and center role while in Beneath, only Pat told the story. (The way you know who is who is because Kate has a different text font then Pat.) Coop also has more of a role and characters that weren't explored previously are here. That's a reason you NEED to read this. Beneath doesn't conclude it, you have to go Above for that.

Roland Smith doesn't disappoint for action and suspense once again. Billed as a middle grade read, I think high school students would enjoy it, too. This is part 2 of the saga that began with Beneath. In this sequel, the brothers travel cross country and even spend some time in coastal Oregon at familiar sites. They are chasing/hiding from the secret underground society that is relocating and plans to take down the world powers. Aided by a senior citizen librarian/brother of evil genius, Pat and his brother Coop finally reunite with Kate and escape certain death with some help from an unexpected source. Great fun!

This book was actually pretty interesting because it had a lot of action in this book. The guy in this book was able to hide when he was in plain sight so I wonder if he could become invisible and could only imagine how it is. Not even helicopters and stuff could find him. It was kind of boring at the beginning because that's how it goes, it kind of has to work its way up the plot because that is why it has the rising action. Once it got closer to the middle where the climax is though that's when it got better. The kids that were trying to hide from him never knew that he couldn't really hide because he is able to hide in plain sight.

I enjoyed Beneath more so then Above. I felt like the chase was dragged out longer then necessary and less focus was on the plot. However, I still think it is a great book that I am glad I purchased for my classroom. To incorporate science, we could conduct a study on the popular California Red Woods that were part of this book. For social studies, we could research and talk about the United States dependence on technology and what would really happen if someone took down our technology source.

An absolute thrill ride that is somehow better than the stellar original. The book starts off as an intriguing mystery and subtly gathers speed until the last fifty to one hundred pages when the book turns into a rollicking thriller.

The book also has a good message about saving our environment and our over-dependence on technology.

The characters are even better in this book and the ending of the book leaves just enough open for a sequel, and a surprise for fans who've been following this incredible series.

This was a good sequel to Beneath, though I think I preferred Beneath better. Coop, Pat and Kate are on the run, and following the Pod to their new location. Assisted by Alex, there are a lot of twists and turns in the road for them as they try to prevent the plans of Lod and those who are from the Deep.

I think Smith hits a chord on what is going on in the world right now. Hackers, terrorists, and those who wish to do harm to others are in the fore front, and the ends to which the Pod was willing to go to achieve their agenda was frightening.

"You get to learn how to drive a truck."
Hilarious and action-packed. First books are almost always the best though...for some reason I spent the whole thing thinking Patrick was 13 (and somehow I always thought of him as Patrick not Pat) and Coop 18, for a while I assumed Kate was somewhere in between maybe 15? Turns out Coop and Kate are 20 and Pat is 15. My bad.

I like how Coop can tap dance and how he draws attention to himself really easily. i also like how Alex was Lods brother. its funny and also cool how pod(people of the deep) have been planning tings for years and how there are nearly no mistakes in anything, Lod(lord of the deep) has contingency plan after contingency plan.

The book Above is a fascinating adventure through 3 main characters. Above is the sequel to beneath by Roland Smith. In my opinion I think that beneath was just slightly better but they both were great books. The 3 main characters are Coop, Pat, and Kate. Kate is captured and spies on them. Pat and Coop then find a third member named Alex. Roland does a great job of showing views of both sides.

This was a satisfying conclusion to the story started in Beneath. I wasn't quite as captivated or enthralled by it as I was with Beneath, but I still enjoyed it from start to finish. The stakes were raised for the characters, but for me nothing felt forced or out of place, it was surprising and exciting to read while still being reasonable. If you loved Beneath (like me), you will like Above.

Great finish to the first book, Beneath. This is a terrific book for reluctant boy readers as many of Smith's book are- this sequel will not disappoint. I love the characters that he has developed. Just quirky enough to fall in love with.

Loved this one, and it had a satisfying conclusion. I was glad that it wrapped up in two books without dragging it out too long. I read this one right after I finished the first one. I'm a sucker for these sci-fi end-of-the-world type books.

"Above" is nicely done. It has enough suspense mixed with realistic encounters to make this a believable story. I was surprised with the ending. I had anticipated a third book in the series, but the conclusion seemed to bring the conflict to a halt. Thank you for the fun read, Roland Smith!

This is the sequel to "Beneath" that was so good. Roland Smith is a very interesting author. He definitely has his own style. It has engaging characters and he is able to raise the intensity and yet it all works out in the end.
