Creatures: A Collection of Short Stories

Rate this book
From the mind that brought you Ravens in the Sky...

Creatures is a collection of short stories written for the suburban reader. These fantasies take place in our libraries, our back yards, our roads, our wineries, and in our minds. Creatures are filled with human insecurities and character flaws. It’s no wonder why they make us feel uneasy.

Brought to life by a writer who shares all the daily anxieties we've grown to endure.

Creatures is a fun little collection of odd, very short tales about just that… creatures, in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Will Bly is known for fantasy, but my favourite stories were by far those that simply told of regular (if slightly ambitious) animals, just from the creature’s point of view. Both “Bloody Bagel” and “Indignant Living” share tales of common beasts (a seagull and a woodchuck, respectively) who reached too far and suffered the fate of arrogance and served as cautionary tales. The woodchuck in particular was pretty cute, and who can fault anyone for wanting one more tasty feast?

The Book Goblin was also pretty fun, and hopefully not based on Mr Bly’s own personal experience. There are no stories of mysterious burned down libraries in the author’s past, are there? ;-)

All in all, the tales served as an appetizer for bigger and better things to come (anyone else looking forward to Raven’s Bane?) but serves as a nice way to tide us over while we wait.

Creatures is quite an adventurous read. Funny, wacky and yet after reading these stories, I felt quite introspective. It really touches on how untouched with nature our society as humans has become (ironic because most of the stories are shown through the eyes of a non-human). How busy, busy we are and perhaps if we slowed down and looked around outside (or picked up a book :)), we would be a little bit happier, a little less anxious. Highly recommended!
