As the infected continue to evolve, the newly transformed Luke heads West, with his new wife and old friends, to rediscover himself and his mission in a world overrun with Hunters.
"President" Barnes also sets his sights on the West, where he can raise his largest and most advanced army of zombie-like flesh-eaters.
While Barnes is convinced that the creatures comprising his mindless hordes are ideal, and temporary, super-soldiers (predestined to literally fall apart after a few years), Luke is discovering that some of them may have a different fate.
I grew up in a small town in Indiana, but instead of living on the wrong side of the tracks it was the wrong side of the river. I went right into the Army after graduation, and spent almost four years in the 25th Infantry Division as an Intelligence Analyst. I came home to a factory job, a place where if you watched the workers walk through the doors in the morning you would understand the scenes from “Shaun of the Dead,” where he went through his daily routine without realizing that the people around him had become zombies. A few years of that inspired me to start taking college classes; my passion for reading and my obsession with history led me to become a high school social studies and English teacher.
I then discovered that what had been a hobby, studying history, was now a professional obligation that I embraced with almost fanatical enthusiasm. Eventually, I felt ready to pick up the pen and write, which led to “Tours.” What I learned about medieval warfare during my research for that novel contributed greatly to the fights and battles that take place in “Zombie Crusade.”
I have wanted to be an author since I read, “For Whom the Bell Tolls” by Ernest Hemingway, whose philosophy has been summed up by one analyst as, “We owe the gods a death, but at least we can face the rendezvous like men!” One of my inspirations to actually sit down and start writing novels was John Eldridge’s book “Wild at Heart.” That book explores the hearts of men, arguing that deep inside our hearts we all long for a righteous battle to fight. You will find the philosophies of both of these men in everything I write, from historical fiction to stories of a zombie apocalypse.
My ultimate goal is to both entertain and educate. The primary message of every story I publish is that freedom is a good thing–something we should be willing to fight for with all of our hearts, minds, and blood. We humans constantly struggle against someone or something trying to take away our natural right to live free, and we also struggle with the responsibilities inherent in exercising that freedom. Whether it be an autocratic militant seeking our enslavement or ravenous zombies trying to eat us, these threats to the physical and spiritual autonomy of mankind are the inspiration for my novels.
Finally, like many of you, something in my soul believes that the modern way of life is ultimately unsustainable, and a horrific time of reckoning is looming on the horizon. I am a prepper, not even close to the best of them, but I am trying to prepare my family for an eventual collapse of our culture and society. I hope I am wrong, and that I will dotter around as an elderly man hearing, “I told you so” from every person I’ve ever warned to get ready. Still, an underlying theme in my stories is that people must always be ready to ultimately be responsible for their own safety and survival and not rely on any government agency.
I wish peace unto all of you, but as a Machiavellian, I also urge you to prepare for war!
Now that is a zombie book. Great story following the characters we have all loved from the start. Humanity is on the brink from a nut job want to be president (sounds familiar), will Luke and the crew save the day. I would recommend you buy all the books and read back to back for a horrific zomfest. Can't wait for the next one.
This is no longer a traditional zombie series. Those of you who want zombie action scenes -- there's still some of that. But, Vohs has moved this story well past the point of simple entertainment, which I would suspect is all he ever initially set out to do with the first couple installments. This isn't a zombie story where you're going to be on the edge of your seat wondering who is going to live or die. Our heroes have learned how to fight back, and they are no more afraid of the Hunters than they are of lions, tigers, and bears (oh my). This is a zombie story, however, that's going to make you think about when it is worth living and when it is worth dying.
The characters in this story have never been my favorites, but they have continued to develop, and their personalities are more defined than ever before. For those who are irked by Jack's apparent perfection, Jack makes only a few appearances, and the teens in the story (Luke, Gracey, Maddie, & Zach) really take the lead. There is one new main character that has somewhat stolen my heart, though. I sympathize and identify with Will more than anyone else. He shows raw emotion when the main characters have kept it together just too well.
The conflict and battles are, per usual, well-coordinated and tame enough that even my squeamish stomach had no trouble reading the fighting scenes. The landscapes and travel routes appear to be exactly on target. If one isn't too engrossed in the reading, you could probably follow along on google maps. You might also get a little quirky military history lesson if you pay attention.
I rate this series a solid five! The books were very well written with excellent character development, solid story line and a dynamic that pulled one through each battle as though being there. Best dystopian I've read and I read a "LOT". Suggest more in the series. Please? Rate a VERY solid 5 stars.
This series keeps getting better and better. Love the characters and how the story is developing. If you haven't read from the start of the series stop reading this review, buy all the books in the series and get to reading. Great read. Well done Mr Vohs.
It takes authors so dang long to write the Next books in line is why I gave this 4 stars... That and I feel like it's kinda missing or losing so,etching in all the add ones and separate stories with zero references to Canadian survivors or Terry who was with Zach in final battle.. And also doesn't lead in.....
JW Vohs is undoubtedly the best zombie genre author alive. Jack, Luke, Maddy,Zach, Gracie, and Carter kick more ass in this sixth installment. Will is an amazing addition to the team. I can't wait fort 7
