NEW YORK CITY – In just over a year since romance author Blue Saffire began writing and releasing books, she has trailblazed a path to success that many indie writers can only dream of. A multi-Swirl Award winner and a perennial Amazon bestseller, Saffire is the woman behind the popular interracial romance series “Legally Bound,” “Hush,” “Ballers,”“Brothers Black,” “Perfect For Me” and “Yours.”
Always the overachiever, Saffire typically releases a new book every four to six weeks, quenching the thirst of her dedicated fans with spicy storylines and dynamic writing. Saffire has seven releases slated between October 2016 and January 2017 including three new “Brothers Black” books and four new “Legally Bound” books.
One of Saffire’s keys to success is her talent for connecting with readers on a personal level. In 2017, she’s throwing Blue’s March Madness from March 23 to March 25 at Wild Dunes Resort in Isle of Palms, SC. Not only does each reader get a chance to meet and hang out with Saffire, she’s inviting her bestselling author friends to join in on the fun. Included in the price of tickets are the events, new books exclusive to March Madness attendees and an extra-special secret surprise. BLUE SAFFIRE is a woman on a mission to share her words and thoughts with the world. She has found her passion in her pen and steams up the pages with her humor, honesty, love and voice. Saffire represents the secret author inside that some of us are too scared to let out.
Saffire and her family all enjoy life in the suburbs. However, life throws her challenges daily and since her diary is no longer enough, she has decided it is time for new outlets for the words she would never say face to face to her friends, family and definitely not her husband. Many authors have what I call a theme or a formula for their books. For many, it could be the genre, e.g., mafia, baby, etc., but for some, it could be the actual characters themselves. Let me explain. Author Blue Saffire, in her recent release of the Yours series, discusses briefly why she, in many of her books, describes her black female characters with less than traditional African American features. For instance, many, if not most of her black heroines have light eyes and/or blonde hair. As we all know, black people come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and skin tones, and I think it’s great that we celebrate our own diversity. But you know me; there is always a “but” in there; it just seems, and not just this author, that I have noticed in the IR genre in general, an overwhelming amount of seemingly black heroines possess European features. Again, I completely understand that we all don’t have brown eyes and kinky hair, etc., but goodness, what is the percentage of us who do have “chocolate” skin also have blonde hair and blue eyes? And, is it so wrong to write a character with traditional African features? With “chocolate” skin, curvy body, natural hair, and brown eyes? I honestly get what the author is doing and am impressed that throughout her story, she touches briefly on colorism and loving your features no matter how different they are from the “norm”. But is this celebrating our diversity or is it mainstreaming your work? (This is not to say this author does this. I honestly want to know because this has been more prevalent in this genre in an effort to be more universally appealing to non-black readers). Ok, I am going to get off my soapbox and get to this review:
This review, as you will soon be able to tell, will be a combination of both books in the series.
One thing I will say is that because all of these stories contain characters from her other series, a clearer family tree is sorely needed. Though the author does provide a character roster in all of her books, a clearer and more structured family tree or list is needed because there is constant crossover and new additions with each new installment or series. I say this because, and I don’t know if many other readers caught on to this, but in the first book of the series Yours, Kimmie is “pregnant”, but readers don’t know this because it’s not discussed in the first book, although the author gives it away in her list of characters.
Sephora is a beauty, but with like most of these stories, she doesn’t realize her own worth or appeal. Her mother has always put her down, and she feels like the ugly duckling. One night, she meets the handsome and dominant (Although, as a reader, I really didn’t get that vibe from him) Nick Lincoln who changes her life. Nick enjoys being in control of all things and because of his past has many demons. He is captivated by Sephora, and once she comes of age, whether she knows it or not, she is his.
In the first story, Sephora is running from Nick and essentially from herself. She doesn’t know who she is (not in an amnesiac way, but trying to find her way), and everyone has an opinion about how she should live her life. I get that this series is supposed to include BDSM, but honestly, it didn’t read like a BDSM story. It did include some BDSM elements like the collar and playroom, but it wasn’t fully fleshed out. I just felt like this was added as a tag-on. Let me explain. Nick collars Sephora, but she doesn’t even know the significance of a collar until her brother explains to her what the necklace represents. Huh? Isn’t that a Dom’s responsibility? And all the men, including Sephora’s brother Luke, have a “darkness” that can only be explored through BDSM because of their past. (Sounds cliché much?)
Now in the second story, it’s all the back and forth with Sephora and Nick, the “I love you’s and I will never leave you’s:, we get it. There were chapters of them saying the same thing repeatedly but in different POVs. I felt like it was more to the story, but the author wasted space going over the same thing. I actually liked the idea of this story but more was needed to the story. The author kept repeating herself with these characters. It was the same fight and argument every other chapter. And the sex scenes? Nothing seemed fresh, which is sad because this story could have been better if the author explored more of the suspenseful aspect of the story and not just adding superfluous scenes.
The author mentions that all of her stories build on each other and that readers will see a crossover of many characters from her other series. I don’t take issue with this, but a timeline is sorely needed. Because there are so many characters in these books, it’s virtually a mind overload trying to keep up with all of them and figure out what’s going on, and the actual time the story is taking place. The many nicknames that each character has only adds to the confusion. It is honestly difficult to say that this was truly Nick & Sephora’s story because there were so many characters and aspects of the story.
I will say that editing is much improved from her earlier series, but it was still hard at times to tell who was doing the talking. Things are happening in these stories, but they are not really fleshed out. A new chapter begins, and the reader is to infer what happened next. Events and happenings seem a little all over the place and include many chapters of just the author narrating and no character interaction or movement. And all of Sephora’s insecurities are like whiplash— she is strong and confident and proclaims to fight for her man one minute and then the next, one misunderstanding or Nick speaking with another woman, she becomes withdrawn.
When Sephora does finally find’s her voice, she makes silly decisions. For example, she knows the story of his ex and his parents and is warned repeatedly to stop digging. Although she knows it’s dangerous, she continues on, yet one disparaging comment about Nick and she breaks down? These stories, although fused with a promising element of suspense, are drowned out by the characters defending their relationship and Sephora trying yet again to come to terms with their relationship.
In conclusion, this is not a personal attack on the author, so please don’t take this personally. As a reader, this is my opinion, and yes, a review is an opinion. This is not the gospel, and no, I don’t expect others to agree with me, so save the comments from the fan girls. While this wasn’t my favorite book by the author, this is not to discourage others from reading the series. I’ve actually enjoyed Blue Saffire’s work, specifically, The Brothers Black series. I just didn’t love this story. It seemed rushed and not fully fleshed out. Please don’t judge this book based on this one review but for yourselves.
Love this author's work and I'm glad that this story just focused on Sophi and Nicholas. This is actually the first story that I have read from this author that was only told from one point of few. I suspect the second book will be from Nicholas's sense the first just focused on Sophi. Now I will say that you as a reader has to be patient with the character of Sophi because she is so frustrating and immature especially in the beginning of the book but she starts to grow as the book progresses. By the end of the story she still has some growing to do but I'm hoping that she grows into a mature competent woman by the third book. Overall was a sweet love story built into a book based on a sub and dom relationship. So far not much information is given but small hints are given about how that dynamic will be in the two main characters relationship. If you want to read some other great books that have the same relationship dynamics I recommend my to favorites: Ezra series by Love Belvin and Sweetest Taboo by Harper Miller.
I wonder sometimes if authors know how much we need to like empathize or be captivated by the characters we are reading about. This book was giving me good vibes AT FIRST!! I was a getting that vibe where you just know you are gonna get a good story the hero is flawed the heroine likes him from a distance but doesn't take crap from him then BAM!! Like a thunderbolt you are treated to the worst cliches and annoyances a book can provide, I found myself feeling dumb for being on this weird chicks side in the first place. oh the betrayal!! Name it u got it. 1. A Female with no self worth... and I mean none and I don't know how I did not see how weak she was in the first encounter with the hero, oh the betrayal. 2. She lets the hero use her as a babysitter and cook. Oh sweet baby Jesus. 3. She didn't have a life and let his side piece call her a fatty fatty fat fat!!! I was done y'all after she meets with a lost lover goes on a date but still manages to give some to the creepy stalker hero, who figures out he wants her after everybody tells him he kinda knew but really needed everyone to confirm (eye roll), not a man y'all to have sexy dreams of. I figure the 3 + hours I spent with this book is all I have to give and have no interest in watching the growth of this moron and the dude she likes more than she loves herself over the course of 2 other books, it could be my loss but I am willing to take that risk, which is a shame really because this book started like a pistol and I wanted to like it, I really really did.
Hmmmm I mean I liked it... I will read book 2 but we are going to have to give me more of a twist to make me feel like this isn't a normal version of ..... nope I'll just keep that to myself.
so now I wait... I will know for sure book two if I like it or love it
"I have chocolate skin, that only works on my mother or pretty girls like Tika Sumpter or Naturi Naughton" I'm done. That was the equivalent of "you're pretty for a dark skinned girl"
I think this was a great read something that I can relate to. I too growing up having to face some of Sephora obstacle in life have people thinking you're not good enough. Dark skin girl did not have the monopoly on this. Having being a light skin girl I had to listen to people saying you think you're better because of it. As a child that's hurt coming from family because you happens to be some shades lighter, to the point you're finding yourself sitting in the sun trying to get darker. I know I went off script but it brought back memory. OMG the sex scene was awesome
I think, maybe I'm even more disappointed because of how difficult it is to find a BWWM Romance author I like, (who is actually good at writing and doesn't just throw words on a page), and the storyline is pretty good, it has so much potential, if ONLY the writing wasn't so bad ➡️ at this point I'd even settle for just an editor. I mean, I love me some Nick, and Sophi isn't too bad herself, given what else is out there, she could be significantly worse... 🤷🏾♀️ she strikes me as naive more than anything else, and that we can live with because she has potential to mature out of it.
But this writingggggg... L.A.W.D. 😩😩😩
THIS. BOOK. NEEDS. A. FUCKING. EDITOR. OH. EM. GEEEEEEE!!!! 😡😡😡😡
⬆️ I know I'm getting repetitive, but jeez, that's how I felt every. time. I. read. every. repetitive. word. in. almost. every. other. sentence., sometimes. even. in. the. same. sentence.😤😤
I TRIED. I tried REALLY HARD. But I just couldn't. It got to a point I was highlighting all the words that were missused, all those that were used in place of what should/could have been, thereby rendering the sentence illegible, and I SWEAR, this author cannot tell the difference between present tense, past tense and past participle. She can't decide if her characters are speaking in the present or in past participle and so most sentences have both tenses in them. 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
Also, if I EVER see the fucking word "Yanno" again, I think I'm going to burn something down!!!! LITERALLY!!!!It just reads sooooo out of character for this individual the author is trying to sell us (Like, where in this character's life would she have picked it up??) and it's so random, to be the only colloquialism of it's kind used by this character, that it leaves me confused and irritated EVERY TIME IT APPEARS ON PAGE.
I REALLY DIDN'T WANT TO DNF THIS BOOK, BUT BOY WAS IT A CLOSE ONE!!!!Uggghhh and the only reason I started it to begin with was because I wanted to read one of her other books and it suggested getting to know Nick in this one first.
I am saddened because it has so much potential and with an editor, it would actually be a really good book.
But, well, as it stands, there's just too many errors in the writing for me. 🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️
I have read all of this author's books and enjoyed most of them.
This story was a good read and I totally understand about Sephora's trust issues. what I found hard to deal with is that Nick's secretary already demonstrated to Sephora that she wants her man and will play dirty tricks to get to Sephora. Instead of trusting her man or at least giving him the benefit of the doubt she immediately thinks the worse of him when this woman pulls one of numerous tricks on Sephora. I thought she would have learned from her previous experience with this woman and trust her man instead of instantly believing the worse of him. So whilst I enjoyed the story, I was very disappointed with this element of the story. I think we should give the men we say we love the benefit of the doubt until they prove us wrong. Just my view! We will have to see what happens in book 2.
I enjoy most of your books but after reading quite a few, I’m growing annoyed by the misuse of words and it is consistent in all your novels. Whoever you have proof reading your work should be fired. Good god the word is ensure not insure, and there are so many others. If you take the time to write a story, you have to ensure that those that support you, do their job. It is only because your story holds my interest that I haven’t walked away from you.
The underlying story of this book is the only reason I give it 3 stars. This book drove me crazy wit the shear volume of grammatical errors and blatant misuse of words. I have to wonder if anyone , including the author bothered to proofread this before publishing. Even now 8 years later no one has got back to clean this book up of these errors. The problem with them is that they interrupt the flow of the story and stop a reader in their tracks as they have to try to go back and figure out what the author is trying to say. It speaks quite negatively for a book when a reader starts concentrating more on the errors than the story. Guess and guest are not the same in meaning or even spelling, yet guess is used repeatedly for guests when referring to people visiting or staying with the main couple. Pass is not the same in meaning or spelling as past, and once again pass is used repeatedly to refer to events which happened in someone's past. Other examples include Know for now, luck for lock, entry for entire, absorbed for exorbitant, halt for hilt eludes for alludes, insistently for instantly, eliminated for illuminated. The list goes on and on. Also, many times with in the same sentence the author switches from using present tense to using past tense. I will say that I have read several of her books that were written a few years after this one and those books, while continuing to have grammatical errors, are much better in this area, though I still think she could rise to the level of a much better author if she would just get a decent editor, because she has interesting stories in her head.
Fifty Shades meets the Marriette & Briggs world but the typos
The story line is a little too close to the Fifty Shades franchise but it’s still an intriguing story. Everything happens a little too quickly for me to be that engaged in the main relationship. I can’t get how the love was there when these people barely interacted from the time they met to the time they started dating but I was still very interested in seeing where it went.
What ruined the story for me was why I assumed were typographical errors. At times the words were so off that it made me wonder if the author thought there were the right words to use and then the sentences made no sense so I couldn’t understand what she meant to say. I totally get that self published works always have these issues but had I not read Blue Saffires work before this I may never read another again. I know she can write better than what is in this story. I sincerely hope that she comes back to this story and does a re-edit.
Oh my what a awesome series that I have really enjoyed. They are must reads by this author. I'm a fan. It has strong and brave women. Men who fight for what they consider is theirs. And of course their steamy connections. There are interesting twists in the story lines; which are fast paced, especially this series, but all them is just as good. so happy I have started binging this author. Each one here are all intriguing with suspenseful plots ending in a cliffhanger. Along with their sizzling hot passions it will keep you turning pages until the end. I enjoyed every moment of their relationships these are ones that I didn't put my Kindle down until I finished the story if are like myself you will enjoy it because are definitely excellent romances.
I initially read this quite a while ago, but evidently didn't leave a review! Wow, Nick is such a Sex Walking kinda guy. Love him in this book. Sephora is a lovely girl, but her insecurities are difficult for me to identify with. I love the way Nick can be so hardass and then be so loving and supportive. The fact he can deal with all Sephora's insecurities says a lot about what he feels for her. Now they have got to take care of that spank Jillian. Sephora 's sister, Write is a little too much as well; although I can tell she loves Sephora. Looking forward to the next book.
This book wasn’t as good as the others I’ve read so far. I went back to read this series after reading Brothers Black 2. Sophie is a weak, awkward and a Virgin. Lincoln is your typical alpha male which I like but I don’t feel the connection with him and Sophie. She just graduated and had a crush on him for 4 years but they never saw each other during the 4 years. Then after graduation he pursues her and gets her but everything happened so fast I felt like I don’t know what they like about each other.
I’ll think about reading the next book but I honestly might just skip it and go back to reading about the Blacks, Mariette’s and Briggs family.
I'm into it. Definitely not one of Blue Saffire's best written books but it got me hooked into the series and interested in reading more. We have a young heroine who goes from what she believes as an awkward ugly duckling to a swan and we read about her journey to blossom into a confident, self assured career woman while she falls in love with her brother's very wealthy, sexy friend with a dark and kinky side who also ends up not only being her benefactor in college, but her boss at her first job out of college. Little did she know, Nicholas Lincoln had desired her since she graduated high school, but kept his distance. They eventually fall into this whirlwind passionate love affair but it's riddled by distrust (on her part) and lack of maturity (again, on her part). So enter the drama sprinkled with hot sex scenes between an inexperienced young woman and her older, hot and passionate beau. It is keeping my attention so I'm off to book 2. 3.5 stars
This is so good I did not like that I had to stop to do something else. That’s how good this story is you don’t want to stop reading. Now me I would definitely be beating the crap out of Jillian, she needs somebody to put her in her place. But I also think Nicholas approached Sephora to soon, to me she is still wet behind the ears. Nicholas should have approached her when she turned 25 or 26. I think she would have been able to handle Jillian like she needed to. But I headed to book 2 to see what happens.
I have not been able to put this book down. BDSM has always intrigued me and this story gives you a little taste. I feel bad that Sephora is so naive and hope that she hurries and grows up. I had a feeling that Jillian was as going to be a problem. Why do powerful people like him always has some kook in their circle. I can’t sit to finish this review so I can read the next installment. Glad to see Kevin Briggs and Mariettie law firm mentioned. Thanks Blue Safire for an intriguing story.
Good story. The characters are complex and the storyline is believable. As always, the story is engrossing. The incorrect verb tenses and misuse of words (e.g., chaise for chaste, absorbed for exorbitant) kept pulling me out of the story. I read Legally Bound out of order and most of this world completely out of recommended order so I’d never seen this magnitude of errors. Hopefully, this represents very early work before she got a good editor.
Nick knew what he wanted, he saw, he waited then he conquered. He asked her to trust him, he told her over and over that he only wanted her. He showed her that there was no one else for him but our childhood can do a number on us. Very entertaining, erotic, and I love the patience he had with her. Have to see what happens next. I don’t want to say more because I don’t like giving spoilers.
What a great read !!!!! This was definitely one of the best stories I've read. I love Sephora, so sweet & innocent ,Nick the alpha male, Luke the protective brother, her friend Kimmie and sister Ettie. This series started great & will end the same due to the fact that a great author wrote it.
Still love the author but the characters in this book seem a shadow of the originals. This book feels like the draft of the real thing...I can't stand Sephora and the way she is written. She is a contradiction of her history and\or past. Maybe in book two she and her friends\family grow up!
Nick Lincoln has been a godsend in Sephora Emilsson’s life, but she never thought he’d honestly be interested in her. And he’s VERY interested.
I’m unfortunately writing this review after finishing the entire series. Nick and Sephora’s relationship is wildly intense, all things considered, but I think it’s a good read at the end of the day. Blue Sapphire takes the opportunity to really experiment with cliff hangers, and I can’t say it doesn’t pay off.
I've read so far every book Blue has written and I'm in love them Black's brothers, I could use a Noah in my life right now. Can't wait to see what happens in that cliffhanger she left me. Omg I recommend her highly. Read from the beginning, but I severely recommend reading the Brothers Black series...it to die/scream for.
I loved this book about two people who have so many secrets about themselves that they don't know what to do about it. Two people harboring the secrets of the past and don't know how to get rid of them. But once Nick sees Sophi he is a goner and waited for her but I don't think she knows what she has gotten herself into with Nick, but they found love in each other.
this girl really needed to be strong! this gave me fifty shades vibes, and i don't like that story for the reasons i don't like this one.
hence, it is a bit repetitive, as other rich alpha men books, out there. i was thoroughly irritated, but read through it, wondering what their end would be.
Blue is literally one of my favorite authors! I simply love her style of writing, however Sephora got on my last nerve with all the crying!!! She acted extremely immature at times. Nick was truly an alpha male and I hated Sephora for him!!!
This has been an interesting start for this trilogy It has been on my TBR list for the longest and finally decided to step into reading it Have to say I am not disappointed It does have a touch of the BDSM lifestyle, can't wait to see the developments
I love that Sophie is relatable to anyone who has been made to feel less than. She is not immature she is just trying to find her place. She has been in the dark concerning her whereabouts for so long. Time to wake up.
Sephora is very insecure and these feelings are prohibiting her from seeing things clearly. It is painfully clear that Nick is head over hills in love with her.
