Interrotti gli studi liceali, si dà alla politica quale socialista attivo e prende parte alle lotte contro la guerra e al movimento operaio rivoluzionario; nel 1921 partecipa a Livorno alla fondazione del Partito Comunista (che rappresenta a Mosca, con Togliatti, nel Komintern), ma se ne stacca nel 1930, in disaccordo con le purghe staliniane. Antifascista, resta in esilio in Svizzera dal 1930 al 1945, anni durante i quali matura la sua vocazione di scrittore. Pubblicato in traduzione tedesca a Zurigo nel 1933, “Fontamara” è il suo romanzo d’esordio, che lo impone all’ attenzione generale: oltre ad essere una straordinaria analisi della cultura centro-meridionale, “un documento su una civiltà ormai definitivamente morta” (Fofi), è pure con ogni probabilità il più bel libro sui contadini italiani che sia mai stato scritto. Il successivo “Pane e vino” del ‘36 riprende, in una chiave più sentimentale, meno ironica, i temi del fortunato predecessore, laddove “Il seme sotto la neve” (1942) sembra stazionare tra manierismo e ritualità. Frattanto, nel periodo 1932-'34 egli è redattore del mensile in lingua tedesca, edito a Zurigo, «Information», cui collaborano artisti ed intellettuali del calibro di Thomas Mann, Bertolt Brecht, Robert Musil. Fiorente, pure, la sua attività saggistico-culturale, che annovera il saggio “Il fascismo, le sue origini e il suo sviluppo” (1934) ed il trattato di filosofia politica “La scuola dei dittatori” (1938). Nel 1944, rientrato in Italia, si stabilisce a Roma, ove aderisce al Partito Socialista Italiano di Unità Proletaria. La sua produzione letteraria continua con il lavoro teatrale “Ed egli si nascose” (1944) e con i romanzi “Una manciata di more” (1952), “Il segreto di Luca” (1956), “La volpe e le camelie” (1960): meno originali dei precedenti, più legati ad un modello di letteratura tardo-ottocentesca, esprimono una sorta di conversione del nostro, che approda qui ai lidi di un socialismo ibridato col cristianesimo. Di grandissimo interesse, invece, “Uscita di sicurezza” (1965), raccolta di saggi politici in cui egli racconta il doloroso travaglio che lo condusse infine a distaccarsi dall’ ideologia comunista, e “L’avventura di un povero cristiano” (1968), sua ultima fatica apparsa in vita, un intrigante romanzo - saggio incentrato sulla figura di papa Celestino V, in seguito trasformato in testo teatrale. Ebbe a dire di lui Albert Camus: "Guardate Silone. Egli è radicalmente legato alla sua terra, eppure è talmente europeo".

بشر حتی اگر سرش فقط به کار خودش مشغول باشد باز هم گرفتار است. حتی اگر انسان درست و شریفی باشد.
کتاب بسیار خوشخوان که دو روز خوندمش، عالی بود. تقابل عشق و دنیای سیاست.

چون همین صدوچهل صفحه رو خیلی شلخته و پراکنده خوندم و یهعالمه هم خوندنش رو طول دادم، خیلی نمیتونم نظر درستی راجع به داستان بدم.
فقط میتونم بگم ترجمۀ کتاب خوب بود. اما ویراستاریِ افتضاحش واقعاً اذیتم کرد.

May 22, 2015از خوندش لذت بردم، ولی چقدر پایان ساده و بی شیله پیله و غیر هیجان انگیز و حتی تا حدودی کسل کننده ای داشت.موضوع کتاب در مورد فاشیسم موجود در ایتالیا در قرن بیستمه. در کنارش یک رابطه عشقی غیر آتشین و آرام هم وجود داره که زیاد بهش پرداخته نشده. ترجمه بهمن فرزانه خیلی روون و خوندنیه. پایانش باعث میشه تا به کسی پیشنهاد نکنم که این کتاب رو بخونه

یه روایت ساده از فاشیسمِ قرن بیستم در ایتالیا!
من توی 18 سالگی کتاب نان و شراب رو از سیلونه خونده بودم و با اینکه خیلی سال ازش میگذره اما داستانش هنوز یادمه و به قدری برام جذاب بوده که همیشه دلم میخواد دوباره بخونمش؛
اما در مقایسه با اون رمانِ پرکشش و به یاد موندنی، این داستان خیلی ضعیف بود. یه ریتم ساده ی یکنواخت و یه پایان معمولی. و اینکه داستان انقدر زود جلو میره و از همه ی مسائل (و حتی عشقی که پشت جلد کتاب بهش اشاره شده) راحت میگذره، که من حس کردم شاید خیلی جاهاش سانسور شده(نمیدونم اصلا. فقط یه حسه).
بهرحال خوندنش رو پیشنهاد نمیکنم.
ولی خب از حق نگذریم به ترجمه ش باید پنج تا ستاره داد!
بهمن فرزانه مترجم مورد علاقه ی منه و کتابهایی بودن که من فقط و فقط به اعتبار ترجمه ی ایشون خوندم(بدون اینکه نویسنده رو از قبل بشناسم).

قصهای که سیلونه قصد روایتش رو داشت به نظرم جذاب بود. اینکه چطور اعتقادات سیاسی در برخورد با زندگی شخصی و به خصوص احساسات اونهایی که به شدت دوستشون داریم برای مبارز سیاسی ( اگه بشه این عنوان رو به شخصیت دانیله نسبت داد) ایجاد چالش میکنن. اون هم چالشهایی که به راحتی نمیشه پاسخی براش پیدا کرد. با این حال روند کند ابتدای داستان و رد شدن سریع از بخشهای اصلی کتاب که جان کلام رو در خودشون دارن یه مقدار جذابیت داستان رو برای من کم کرد.
جان کلام داستان برای من در این دیالوگه:
- عدهای عقیده دارند که قیام فقط کار جوانان مجرد و فقراست.
دانیله بلافاصله گفت:
- این یک داستان قدیمیست. خیلی قدیمیست.ولی شرط لازم اینست که مجردها مصمم باشند برای همیشه مجرد بمانند و فقرا هم میلی به متمول شدن نداشته باشند. چون در غیر اینصورت جریان باز از اول شروع خواهد شد. یا بهتر است بگوییم از اول هم عقبتر خواهد رفت و تازه باید تعیین کنند که چه نوع انقلابی را قادرند انجام دهند. Il primo e unico libro che avevo letto di Silone è stato Fontamara, lettura obbligata della scuola e confesso che non ricordo praticamente nulla. Ero perciò titubante di fronte a questo libro che, nonostante l'argomento, si è rivelato scorrevole e interessante. Letto oggi sembra che parli di qualcosa di molto lontano ma è uno spaccato della realtà di quei tempi.
Il protagonista, Daniele, è un uomo orgoglioso e dalle convinzioni forti, non si tira indietro quando c'è da rischiare in prima persona ma tutto questo ha delle conseguenze per sè, per la sua famiglia e per tutti quelli che gli stanno intorno.
I pettegolezzi dei vicini quando è fuggito in città e poi quando è tornato al podere dopo la morte del padre, la condizione delle donne in una società ancora patriarcale, gli intrighi e le macchinazioni c'è di tutto in questo breve romanzo che mi ha veramente sorpreso.
Credo che prima o poi rileggerò Fontamara e credo dovrei anche leggere più autori italiani.

For such a short book, this one is really going to stay with me I think. Although some of the writing style of the original Italian version may have been lost in translation, the prose was beautifully written - charming without being excessively verbose or slow. The characters were lovely and sympathetic, and bonus points for being about an underground network. Gave me some hope.

Non meritiamo Ignazio Silone!
Tornerò a dirlo a ogni libro concluso, è incredibilmente grave continuare a snobbare e a sottostimare un autore del genere. I suoi libri dovrebbero affollare le librerie e i profili Instagram di tutti i lettori, di ogni amante della letteratura, non solo italiana ma mondiale!
La volpe e le camelie esce dall'Abruzzo e si colloca geograficamente in Svizzera, nel Canton Ticino, ma non cambia l'ambientazione. I libri di Silone paiono avere un attaccamento ineluttabile e feroce con la terra e il mondo contadino e vanno a scavare a fondo nei miei ricordi d'infanzia e in quelli d'adolescente. Si parla di argomenti che ho sentito trattare e sviscerare tante volte nel mio passato, problemi semplici ma al tempo preoccupanti. Come fermare la volpe che fa strage di galline? Come sarà quest'anno il raccolto? Non pioverà mica il giorno della tanto attesa festa di paese?
Ma questo romanzo è molto altro. La campagna, le persone più umili e dedite al lavoro sono l'humus da cui nascono le storie a carattere e impegno politico, come ha sempre fatto l'autore abruzzese nella sua vita e nella sua vasta produzione letteraria.
Silone, dopo anni di esilio - durante il periodo fascista - e di militanza a sinistra, si allontanò anche da quest'ultima perché contrario alla visione politica stalinista che i comunisti italiani non hanno mai rifiutato con convinzione. Né di destra né di sinistra, dunque e questa sua scelta fu pagata a caro prezzo, basti pensare che il celebre e stupendo Fontamara ha avuto eco nel nostro paese solo diversi anni dopo aver fatto il giro del mondo.
Ma egli non si è mai dato per vinto e ha continuato la sua lotta politica facendo ciò che meglio gli riusciva: scrivendo e denunciando le storture del mondo politico e sociale, senza tirarsi indietro, senza risparmiare vibranti stoccate a nessuna parte ideologica, soprattutto senza ipocrisia.
La volpe e le camelie parla di dissidenti politici e di spie di regime ma anche di una famiglia semplice che prova a sopravvivere in mezzo ai misteri della lotta clandestina, così come parla di uomini ostinati a non cedere di un passo di fronte alle intimidazioni e alle difficoltà. Perché si lotta? Qual è il senso?
Si lotta perché "è una questione di onore". Punto.
Il libro ha un impostazione thriller, quasi poliziesca, è breve, si fa divorare, prende posizione, mira dritto al punto e fa centro, come in tutti gli altri libri di questo autore grandioso che non ha nulla da invidiare ai più illustri colleghi a stelle e strisce, uno su tutti John Steinbeck.

His most important work, Bread and Wine, was written in exile after he was forced to flee in the 1930's because of anti-fascist activities. This novel also has the tense undercurrent of peasants caught between political forces, but disguised within a story of honour and love.
Daniele has returned to the Locarno region after his headstrong father passes away, leaving him the family orchard. A city man, the villagers in the Ticanese colony of Shaffhausen are unwelcoming and mistrust his abilities. Young athletic Agostino works with Daniele and has an unspoken relationship with Daniele's daughter Silvia, whose beautiful smile and carefree nature light up the whole farm. Old Signorina Nunziatina approaches Daniele after many farmers turned her away - a fox has encroached the village in the form of an Italian official asking what she knows of the community - she must hear everything, people tell her things, he will pay. Who is a dissident, speaking out the usual horror stories and lies denouncing Italy? Daniele calms her fears, and enacts a plan with Agostino and a silent encoded network of anti-fascist fighters, including men within the Italian police force itself. Nunziatina unknowing sets in motion a trap for the Italian, leaving him beaten. As the festival of the camellias approaches, Silvia becomes secretive, helping nurse the victim of a car accident near the farm. Days spent with the man, whose bandaged face needs tending turns her heart and they fall in love, showing a more human side to the Italian neighbours.
Not knowing anything about this author or novel, this was a nice surprise. It could be called a thriller as Daniele, a man of peace, instigates a spy network of unexpected villagers, people who have been housing and helping Italian refugees to flee oppressive rule. It is quiet but deadly accurate, producing results. The other side of the story is emotional, as his relationship with his daughter wanes, her attentions diverted to the young man, avoiding her father as the man is Italian. This all comes to an unforeseen climax for the reader. I haven't read much with the theme of anti-fascism but this was understandable and very satisfying.

Un racconto breve, semplice ma pieno di emozione e significato, profondamente umano. La bravura di un autore si vede anche e soprattutto laddove riesce a coinvolgerti nella lettura senza ricorrere a chissà quale trama o colpo di scena, semplicemente cogliendo l'animo umano e tutte le sue sfaccettature; in questo Silone è un maestro.

کتاب متوسطی بود،روان و کوتاه بود و درباره ی اهالی روستایی بود که در زمان موسولینی عقاید ضد فاشیست دارن و شخصی مامور میشه بینشون نفوذ کنه و سرکرده رو بکشه..نویسنده سعی کرده توجه داشته باشه به عشق و فلسفه ی زندگی و...ولی به نسبت کارهای دیگرش توی این کتاب به این موضوعات ضعیف پرداخته شده.اونقدری که باید کشش نداره کتاب و روند تقریبا یکنواختی داره.اما خوندنش خالی از لطف نیست.

📚Ignazio Silone è stato uno dei maggiori esponenti della letteratura italiana novecentesca. L'arte narrativa di Siloni combacia con quel realismo degli umili tipico di Manzoni e Verga.
I suoi romanzi più significativi sono aderenti ad una precisa realtà sociale e regionale, infatti sono quasi tutti ambientati nella sua terra, l'Abruzzo.
📚"La volpe e le camelie" è il romanzo per eccellenza di Silone, perché con esso si discosta dalla sua terra d'origine ambientando la storia tra Italia e Svizzera, ovvero nel Canton Ticino. Questo è un ambiente che ha ben poco in comune con il Mezzogiorno italiano: lo sfondo è una società svizzera democratica ed evoluta dove i protagonisti sono perfettamente consapevoli di sé e dei propri diritti.
📚La storia di Daniele, ribelle antifascista, e della sua famiglia mi ha commossa.
Ho amato leggere questo libro così piacevole, intenso e dolce. La sua lettura mi ha cullata, lasciandomi innamorata di Silone e di quel che è stato.
