Wang Lin is a very smart boy with loving parents. Although him and his parents are shunned by the rest of their relatives, his parents always held high hopes that he will one day become someone great. One day, Wang Lin suddenly gained the chance to walk the path of an immortal, but found that he only had mediocre talent at best. Watch Wang Lin as he breaks through his lack of talent and walks the path towards becoming a real immortal!

Er Gen is a platinum author on Qidian who used his love for classical chinese myths as a foundation on which to build his webnovels. He has become a pillar of the xianxia genre, and his flagship novel, Renegade Immortal, placed within the top ranks of Qidian’s monthly recommendation charts for many months.
Finally finished a novel, sadly can't rate this higher there was a lot of mistakes after all. In terms of uniqueness though, it's as unique as ever, this writer even though he reuses certain themes, but he is still always coming up with new things. One item can make all the difference for a new cultivator we see this in this novel and we also see it in his other novel I shall seal the heaven, which is in my opinion much better than this one. I bet the next book will start and reveal that Wang Lin is already in the foundation establishment realm, I won't be reading that anytime soon though. There is a series that I think I need to read and I'll drop everything to read it first.
**This review covers the whole thirteen book series and as such, it'll be posted here and on the first book.
Preamble: The first feeling I got after endless days of heart wrenching pain in enduring and slogging through over one point five million words, amounting to just about four books, thereby giving each an approximate thirteen hundred pages was that: indeed, after every hardship, certainly there is ease!
Introduction: The grammer is non existent while the writing is terrible, containing kindergarten vocabulary and structure!
The plot is a mixture of the heartrending pain of a family's struggle to overcome and persevere against insurmountable odds, familial bonds and an undying love for their culture and values.
The world-building up to that point was very immersive and phantasmagoric hence my initial captivation while the lore and mythology was absolutely top notch and completely spellbinding, containing eastern philosophy and daoist ideals (I'm a sucker for Lao Tzu).
I honestly haven't read much Xianxia/Cultivation/Progression Fantasy books (about a two dozen so far including [...]), but I can rest assured that it'll take me a long time if at all to get something as mesmerizing, captivating, spellbinding and magically epic within the Cultivation genre that'll compare to this.
Hats off to Er Gen!!! These books are so so good and spellbinding!
So far it has been good. It avoids a lot of the cliches and repetitive wording of RMJI. The cultivation system is a lot more complex so I had to get used to that.
So after the Second Coming of Gluttony, I started to experience withdrawal symptoms. I needed another dose of progression fantasy to keep moving forward in life. And then I decided to experience Renegade Immortal. From what I've read online, it's supposed to be pretty good. So, let's break this review up into the good and the bad.
The good: A new setting I'm unfamiliar with. I've seen cultivation worlds done before (Cradle), but this world really feels ruthless. Like a real deconstruction of that trope. A likeable main character. Lots of nice progression. And a nice payoff.
The bad: I'm not used to stuff like fourth uncle and second uncle and stuff. It took me a little while to feel comfortable remembering who was who. The writing was just ok.
Overall, I liked it. And I'll definitely keep reading.
4/5 Well, That was a great read. I'm definitely gonna continue the series.
What I Liked:
Weak to Strong trope - is one of my favorite tropes so yeah, I liked it. Just give me the chills when the MC grows his power and surprises everyone. 7.5/10
Smart MC - MC uses his wits and brain to fight. He's not arrogant, He's Hardworking, He has heart, He's not stupid, He's realistic, He shows mercy when there is a space for it. Overall a good MC. 8/10
Good World Building - Not great but digestible. I could see that the World is vast and will be better and descriptive. 7/10
Pacing: It has a good pacing.7.5/10
What I did Not Like:
Side Characters: They're average. Forgettable side characters. Only side Character I liked was Wang Hao, rest are either average or garbage. Wang Zhuo looks like a promising rival for Wang Lin so, I pretty much look forward to their next meeting. 6/10
Courting Death Trope/Arrogant Characters in Cultivation novels - Who likes this anyway? It's good when its not so forced. Here, There's so many forced moment where some characters are just very annoying. 5/10
Translation - It's just a mess. Not so smooth. Many grammatical and spelling errors. Sometimes, It just messes with my mind. I can't describe some of the character's action or moves. 4/10
Inconsistent Power Scaling/System - They're very hard to understand. The Power System makes some of the fights underwhelming for me. Specially the fight between the side characters in the Tournament between Heng Yue Sect and Xuan Dao Sect. Overall still Digestible but inconsistent. 6.5/10
Started off as a Typical Chinese web novel with Xianxia elements but surprised me with the interesting plotting by the end.
The review is for all the 13 Books/2088 Chapters
I had read two other books by the same author A Will Eternal I’m Bai Xiaochun which really stands out in the genre with its hilarious comedy and superb action sequences and is among my favorite books, and I Shall Seal the Heavens Patriarch Reliance which blends in all the elements from all the other books in this genre I have read, a mediocre takeaway for me.
As for Renegade Immortal, it is the first book written by the author, we can see the writer grow as the book progress. The best part is, being his first foray into writing, he is fresh with some new ideas and concepts for the genre and that is what is refreshing for the book.
Loved the protagonist and his characterization, he is diligent and sincere. He comes across as mature all throughout the series, he doesn’t fall for the folly typical of eastern fantasy characterization.
While the book is repetitive and not great with the flow of words, it is among the better works available in the genre.
Seeing as this is not my first Xanxia, I've encountered much of the tropes or repetitiveness I would expect so far. It's not by any means bad. I just hope the world building and characters get a lot better. People have told me it's a slow build up
The protagonist was a combination of bland (I'm still pretty vague on what his personality is) and unlikeable (but he is casually cruel in a very hypocritical manner), and there just wasn't anything to keep me reading. I read about 300 pages before giving up.
Rating the series up until chapter 750. This is good xianxia. Basically like I Shall Seal The Heavens but with more emotional bits. It becomes boring around chapter 700, where we lose sight of purpose and meaning and the main character goes to random challenges and trials for the hell of it.
Characters: 2.5/5 mostly generic xianxia with some touching parts World: 3/5 I liked it Story: 2/5 It was fine, till it became meaningless
Characters: These are your standard xianxia characters. The main character is pursuing dao and kills people who want to harm him and repays kindness a hundred fold. You know the drill. There are several areas where there is some emotional stuff, which is nice. It humanizes the mc in a way that other xianxia books fail to do. Of course, he still isn't a particularly good fantasy character.
World: Fine. It's the standard Er Gen thing, but with travelling through space and to other planet earlier in the story, which I appreciate, because it provides more variety.
Story: Same as ISSTH. It's just xianxia. That's why I read this stuff, because it is psychologically safe and I can read the same story again and again with minor variations. This one lets you get to the stars sooner, which is nice. It fails in a unique way compared to the author's other books. A Will Eternal failed when the main character suddenly switched personality traits around chapter 900. ISSTH failed when the main character got close to the top of the world and started a boring and confusing war around chapter 800. This failed when the main character was still muddling around doing random challenges that nobody cares about. I think the main failure was that we ran out of interesting side characters. As strange as it is, xianxia depends on the 2d side characters such as enemy sects and pretentious inner disciples to drive the story and the mc forward. Because the mc went to a different star system, there were too few side characters driving the story so it seems like the mc is moving rather aimlessly.
I feel bad for Wang Lin because he keeps on getting bullied be everyone because of one little, life-changing accident, and the people that are his friends can't be with him.
