Autobiography of working class boy who fought in the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War but left the Communist Party afterwards, lead the naval strike that triggered the UK defaulting on the Gold Standard and after became a Trades Union organiser, and then became a Catholic. Published in 1948 about halfway through his life (the eventful first half).

Fascinating account of what it was to be a socialist between and after the wars, passing through the Invergordon Mutiny in 1931, The Spanish Civil War, WW2 and a religious awakening. Well worth a read for perspectives on event you may know little about.
