Seirin High's greatest basketball superstar was the one no one literally saw coming—the invisible Kuroko!

When incoming first-year student Taiga Kagami joins the Seirin High basketball team, he meets Tetsuya Kuroko, a mysterious boy who's plain beyond words. But Kagami's in for the shock of his life when he learns that the practically invisible Kuroko was once a member of "the Miracle Generation"—the undefeated, legendary team—and he wants Kagami's help taking down each of his old teammates!

It’s the Inter-High quarterfinals! Kaijo’s Kise is challenging To-Oh’s Aomine, and he’s finally managed to copy Aomine’s playing style. And with four fouls already, Aomine’s not looking so hot. Meanwhile, the Winter Cup qualifiers are coming up soon! The top schools from the Inter-High qualifiers are vying for the final spots, and with a revived Kiyoshi on their side, Seirin is like a whole new team!

“No matter how big the difference in skill, I would never, ever want an opponent who holds back or stands aside.”

The road to the Winter Cup has begun, and it seems like a promising one.

After the rather hard loss Seirin suffered, it's nice to see them rallying and being so hopeful and determined to make it all the way to the end, even if it is a hard road.

First of all, we meet Murasakibara, the fourth member of the Generation of Miracles, and he seems to be just as messed up as the rest of that lot. Yet again, so they seem to be at the beginning but they grow on you or, at least, that has been the case with Midorima, and Kise. Now, we just have left to meet the ever-elusive captain Akashi.

While meeting more of the Generation of Miracles is always fun and important, the highlight of this set of volumes for me was, without a doubt, the dive into Kagami's past and meeting Himuro. It is always immensely interesting to see Kagami's story paralleling and mirroring Kuroko's, and all the ways that make them understand each other so well and uniquely.

Though, honestly, the introduction of #2 is the best part of this set of volumes.

“He doesn’t think you have to love the game as long as you have talent. Which also means that those who are interested but have no natural talent annoy him. He’s told me as much. It’s true. A love of basketball alone may not be enough to win. But I try as hard as I do because I love it. And when I do win, it’s the greatest feeling in the world. That’s why I love basketball. And it’s why I like Seirin too. Because you all love it as much as me.”

Although this is no Haikyu, the series is definitely improving its pacing and action scenes. But, um, does the dog keep changing size depending on how much space there is in the panel? He goes from chihuaha to shiba inu to Siberian husky size in one chapter...

At the time of this review, I read volumes 9-18, but as always I will only talk about the current volumes. In this case, I will be reviewing volumes 9 and 10 in the volume 5 omnibus.

71st-72nd Quarter
We finish up the Aomine vs. Kise match. That was INTENSE! I think everybody played their heart out, especially Kise. Kise put his all in when using his talent to copy Aomine.

73rd Quarter: Get Payback
What I like about this chapter is the dialog in this volume between a captain and a player.
Player: [Sitting on the floor; legs are shot]
Captain: [Reaching out to help him.]
Captain: "Can you stand? Just hold out a little longer."
Player: [About to cry] "Senpai, ...I..."
Captain: "You did real good. And it's not like this is the end of everything. Come winter...we'll get payback!"
Player: [Tears coming out of his eyes]

74th Quarter: I adopted him
I really like this chapter! It was cute. I was wondering if we were going to see this in the manga. I knew it happened in the anime, but where it happened in the manga was different.

75th-79th Quarters
In these chapters, we learn more about how Kagami learned basketball. This was a touching and slightly sad story. While I will talk about this concept more in later volumes, I will touch on it here. So far, the one thing I do not like about Kuroko's Basketball is how they view rivalries and friendships. The concept of being friends when not on the court doesn't seem to be there. In Haikyu, we see the boys from the different teams be friendly with each other off the court, but all in playing their hearts out when they are on the court. Now I am not sure if the differences are from the authors' experiences, the nature of the sport and athletes, and/or combination of both. We also get a blast from Kuroko's past as well, but I cannot say much about it due to spoilers.

80th Quarter: Please Just Watch
Kuroko is evolving! Very exciting!

81st Quarter: Activate!
Here we go! The qualifiers for the winter cup! We also start to dive into the background of one of my favorite characters: the guru. We also get this awesome dialog about him from a different teams two players:
Player 1: "W-What's HE doing here?!"
Player 2: "What's wrong?"
Player 1: "You know the Miracle Generation?"
Player 2: "Yeah. who doesn't?"
Player 1: "During middle school...there were OTHER players just as talented as them. In a different time, these other five would've been called prodigies. The UNCROWNED, hidden in the shadows of greatness, That guys one of them...if he establishes himself in the paint, he's unstoppable! "Iron Will"..."
I'm not going to say the guru's name, because that can be a spoiler. Also this different another sports manga that are riddled with prodigies: Haikyu!! They do not really have the concept of the uncrowned, but you could make the argument for it. They do have their own version of the Miracle Generation, which is the Monster Generation. Also you could make the argument that Hinata is like Kagami fighting his way into that elite group.

82nd Quarter: Let's Have Fun With This
Kiyoshi said a line that reminded me of Slam Dunk's Sendoh: "The game's just getting started. Let's have fun with it." What is also great about this series is we get player and audience commentary, which can get some nice insights as well as lines. This comes from Aomine's Captain about Kiyoshi: "Kiyoshi's an unusual center with the passing skills of a point guard. Despite being a center, he can dribble, shoot and even pass. The defense has to guess which is coming and react appropriately. It's like a game of rock-paper-scissors for the opponent. Plus...with hands that big, Kiyoshi can palm a basketball like it's a handball. Ordinary players have to release the ball at a certain point, but he can choose when to release it, which changes everything. So it's not that he's totally unpredictable. Rather, its pointless even if you CAN read him. He can change up his moves AFTER seeing his defender's reaction. It gives him the edge in any strategic battle." I really like that line, but I am not understanding the part about release. Wouldn't that be called traveling, unless traveling is only about dribbling?

83rd Quarter: Declaration of War
Kuroko to Kagami: "If you can manage to cool your head, then...please make...a declaration of war." Then we have some great panels on pages 262-263 that follow-up an impressive feat on pages 260-261 with this line: "No one knew how or why...but somehow...they all felt it. Each member of the Miracle Generation was likened to the kind of prodigy you see once every decade. Up against explosive talent like that, the only ones who could face one of them, one-on-one...would be another Miracle Gen-er. No other players were even in the same class. If another were to appear, it would be years later...or so they thought. What they heard that day...was the sound of a door...the door to an exclusive room built for those incredible prodigies...being ripped off its hinges." Chills, especially in the anime!

84th Quarter: Finally
If Kuroko is not a Hufflepuff then there is something dreadfully wrong with the universe.

85th Quarter: One Loss Is Plenty
"A person who tastes the bitterness of defeat...will be starved for a victory." -Kiyoshi Teppei
Then we have Kagami and Kuroko:
Kagami: "One loss is plenty for me. Time to eat."
Kuroko: "I feel the same way."
Let's go! Seirin!

88th Quarter: Run!
"Kiyoshi and Hyuga were the mainstays, their inside-out duo. The team would score by using quick footwork and passes. Seirin might not be a storied program, but...their offensive firepower and hard-hitting style got them as far as Tokyo's final four last year. It's run-and-gun basketball. That's their basketball philosophy." There we go!

89th Quarter: Been Waiting
Here we go Kuroko vs. the Sniper of Basketball (that is nickname that I just made up for a certain player).

Verdict: Very good volume! In the volume, we see Kuroko go against the Sniper of Basketball.

Not only did this conclude the ending of one of my favorite matches. It also set up Serins new strategy and it is exciting to watch the only do you get a bit of slice of life you also get set ups to dramatic plot points. I think this one might’ve been my favorite so far but I’m still unsure about it but still 4.3/5, things are getting heated now.

I'm going to be biased and say that I love it more and more.

In this volume, we finally got to meet Murasakibara (AKA the tall purple giant!!) and Himuro!! We also see a back story of Kagami and how Teppei play and the introduction of the Uncrowned Kings, well two of them.

Definitely one of the more interesting story arcs. I loved how we got more backstory on Kagami. Also loved how it showed the team trying to recover from their loss. Ultimately a good volume and it did not disappoint.

Kuroko and the others all challenging themselves ^_^ Also Aomine continuing to be a brat...

The "Captain" of the miracle generation interests me. Also Kagami's childhood friend.

(Kagami bonking his forehead into the basket was priceless!)

Next up...Kuroko's new move!!!

Okay, after reading this out of order, I re-read it. It made so much more sense, and I enjoyed even more. Great art, we got some backstory on Kagami, and the games were tense.

This series keeps stepping it up and I just keep falling in love with these characters more and more.

This volume keeps delivering, upping the stakes, balanced with character growth, plot, well times humor and as always a little emotional turmoil.

I just can't get enough!
