Rate this book
The beloved landmark tale of a Meiji-era swordsman’s quest for redemption.

Action, romance, and historical intrigue help make Nobuhiro Watsuki's Rurouni Kenshin, the tale of a wandering swordsman set against the backdrop of the Meiji Restoration, one of the most popular manga titles of all time. Himura Kenshin, once an assassin of ferocious power, now fights to protect the honor of those in need.

Isurugi Raijuta, a truly old-school swordsman, comes to Kenshin and requests his aid in reforming the state of swordsmanship schools in Japan. Although Kenshin is intrigued by Raijuta’s ideals, Raijuta’s plan to weed out the schools he deems unfit is not in accordance with Kenshin’s deepest-held beliefs. But when Kenshin walks away from the offer, one fact quickly becomes apparent: Raijuta will stop at nothing to ensure the supremacy of his own school of sword fighting!

Compared to the first volume, I think this segment represents a weaker part of the series.

We get some interesting expansion on the stories of our side characters. But the main antagonists, and even moments, are relatively short and don't feel terribly rewarding.

Still enjoyable, but not nearly as good.

The conclusion of the whole opium scandal was intriguing and satisfying. I admit the next arc was a bit boring for me, but mainly because I found it predictable. But as annoying as I often find Yahiko, I really enjoyed his frenemy relationship with Yutaro. The two played well off each other and I was pleased with the outcome of solid camaraderie/rivals in the end.

I did not expect Han’nya to look like that since I thought the old man from last time was how he actually looked. It was sad when all of the Oniwabanshu sacrificed themselves. Takeda is a coward, as most RuroKen villains seem to be. Kaoru should just outright tell Kenshin that she has a crush on him. I wasn’t really interested in the Yahiko story arc but it was interesting to finally see his progress. Isurugi seemed to be an interesting villain at first but he quickly devolved into someone unrecognizable. How could such an intimidating appearing villain just turn out to be a scam artist after the battle with the dojo master earlier? Why would you reveal your dastardly deeds in a monologue out of nowhere? I don’t know how his confidence as a swordsman was destroyed for life, but whatever. I liked reading about Yutaro and Yahiko butting heads and was kinda sad when his right arm was paralyzed. I’m glad he’ll be able to do swordsmanship still but he feels li,e wasted potential since the creator himself said that he probably wouldn’t reappear. The sudden art change was a bit jarring. I thought Sanosuke’s ideals would be a foil to Tsunan’s, but nope, he decided to be terrorists together. Luckily Kenshin was there to stop them, which was obvious that it would happen since Sanosuke is one of the main cast and couldn’t go down that path.

About the extra story at the end of the book, Isshinta is an annoying snot-nosed character, and I just hate snot. It was kind of confusing at first that there were two characters both named Natsu. Hiko is basically just Kenshin, so I can understand why the editor thought Hiko was the main character. Also, Hiko took 3 bullets like a champ and barely seemed fazed.

Now I’ll talk about things in the book that aren’t about the plot. I find it hilarious that Kenshin was the only one to get 0 points in the popularity contest despite being the main character. It’s probably because he literally has no character trait other than being strong. It sounds like the creator is upset that more women seem to read RuroKen then men despite being targeted towards men since it’s brought up so many times for no reason.

This is one mangá that has aged so, so well!

I watched the anime when I was a kid and I finally made up my mind and started reading the mangá.

Needless to say, once I'm finished I will rewatch the anime, just for nostalgia's sake.

I initially disliked Kenshin's random acts of goofiness but now I realise those might be on purpose just so he can have others realise that, despite his past and his skill, he's still a human being who is trying to forge a new path.

I really can't wait to read more!

This manga includes the ending of the Oniwabanshu arc and all of Raijuta arc. It was nice to know that one is different than the anime. Raijuta is a little different, and how we meet him and all is a bit more explored I think. It felt like a long arc, but I think is where we learn more about Kenshin's view of swords and strength and on how he should use his powers to help others.

The second volume completes the story of Takani Megumi storyline, with other fillers stories and an extra earlier work of Nobuhiro Watsuki short manga story. Rurouni Kenshin by far, have a good pacing when it comes to delivering a good written samurai tale, and now its preparing for the second major arch story that will define the politics of the Meiji Era of Japan.

The Megumi-Oniwaban chapters introduces a lot of great characters like Aoshi and Megumi. The Oniwabanshu is also a good cast, especially since they’re not around for that much (Hannya is the best).

It’s been awhile since my last reread and I mostly forgot about the Raijuta-Yutaro chapters. It’s a pretty forgettable story and doesn’t contribute much to the overall story.

I love the characters. They seem so similar to other manga, but retain a unique feel. The plot lines are so well done,I see why this book is such a classic. The bonus stories are as good as the main plot too, what a treat!

A delightful subversion of the standard "I'm so strong I have to fight everyone to prove it" bad guy.
