In a world of magic, Asta, a boy with anti-magic powers, will do whatever it takes to become the Wizard King!
Asta is a young boy who dreams of becoming the greatest mage in the kingdom. Only one problem—he can’t use any magic! Luckily for Asta, he receives the incredibly rare five-leaf clover grimoire that gives him the power of anti-magic. Can someone who can’t use magic really become the Wizard King? One thing’s for sure—Asta will never give up!
With Asta captured and Fuegoleon defeated, the Clover Kingdom tries to recover from the attack by the Eye of the Midnight Sun. Meanwhile, the greatest mage in the kingdom launches his own counterattack. Can the Wizard King take these terrorists out before they do any more harm?
Yūki Tabata (Japanese: 田畠裕基, Hepburn: Tabata Yūki) is a Japanese manga artist.
After working as an assistant to Toshiaki Iwashiro, he created the one-shot Hungry Joker, which was later serialized as a full series. After its conclusion, he launched Black Clover.
This is a review of volumes 5-6 which I read together back to back. See the plot section for my thoughts on the individual volumes.
Asta and Yuno grew up together, abandoned at the same church. They both determined to become Magic Knights... Yuno's abilities soon grew to genius levels of power and control while Asta didn't show even a spark of magic and made up for it by training hard physically. It became apparent to both when they received their grimores, Yuno a coveted 4-leaf clover and Asta an unheard of black 5-leaf clover, that they were each other's biggest competition when it came to achieving their goals of becoming the next sorcerer emperor.
After vol 4 I didn't find Black Clover vol 5 very tense, but it did setup a new situation very quickly and I was compelled by how Asta was such an example to Gauche. This thing is this isn't contrived for a second just to make Asta look good... He really truly acts this way every moment! GAHHHH! As we go into Black Clover vol 6 I found the tension super high as the Black Bulls captain, Yami appears and I find I love him even more than F. Vermilion!! There are so many twists and turns with this series, you can't rest for a moment!
I find the art for Black Clover the best! Yuki Tabata focuses on what matters... the characters! Sure he does great location frames and all but the range and depth of his battle shots. He may have one confusing battle scene when a spell goes off but he gets us back into the fight so we are reminded right away of who we're with and whats happening. I think this is because he's obviously studied other mangaka's work and just doesn't assume he knows the best way... That humble attitude makes his work stellar!
In Black Clover vol 5 we start out with a visit to Gauche's sister Marie (which is hilarious!) with Asta along. When some friends of Asta's get in trouble he and Gauche chase them down... I really loved the juxtaposition of Gauche's selfishness (rightly so in a way) and Asta's selflessness (again it makes sense as he's an orphan!) I really enjoy that about Black Clover... there is always an underlying message in the story that I just relate to and love and think everyone should read!!
Then in Black Clover vol 6 we get a visit from my man YAMI!!!! Asta learns his first lesson from his fearless leader as their battle styles are similar in a way. I just love how Asta is so open to learning from ANYONE! That is an attitude that everyone can learn from who reads this... though its just a part of who Asta is so its quite natural and not overtly emphasized (yeah I emphasized it because I think its badass!) We also learn some of Yami's back history... (I just LOVE how Yuki Tabata incorporates a little about the secondary characters into the plot!) We meet the Third Eye... and I'm all for the villain team as well as the Black Bulls!!
The characters read very genuine to me. Gauche hates everyone but his sister, sure, but that makes so much sense when you learn what his ability is!! And Asta is wowed by anything cool and is willing to learn from anyone... totally realistic as he's a magicless fighter!! Yami is odd and badass at the same time... it makes sense he collects those magic knights who don't fit on any other squad because he didn't fit in the Clover Kingdom either... I won't reveal about the villains but even knowing less about them you feel that there is a whole bunch more going on behind their eyes!! This is some genuine characters here, that I can't help but love and adore!!
Black Clover vol 5-6 take the story of Asta in the Clover Kingdom up a notch! We see that Asta has the ability to inspire others, they may not like him but they can't help respect him and his ability to hang in there no matter what! And we become certain that the Black Bulls in the best squad for Asta with Yami as the leader...
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity ⋆ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

Asta is saved with plot armor again, but this time instead of a fairy it’s the wizard king himself. This Hokage Naruto clone defeats everyone in a few seconds, but the villains teleport away once again. It’s hard to take him seriously when he was doing nothing for one and a half volume and for some reason can’t sense them when they teleport the second time, even if he could do so the first time. Oh well, the author doesn’t care and we move to the ending of this arc, where Asta is promoted for getting himself captured while he can counter magic, and not for successfully saving the world in the previous arc. The author doesn’t care one bit.
After that, there is a completely lame part where Asta is being his usual obnoxious self and every girl in the series falls in love with him, including a 5 year old. There is also a guy who is sexually obsessed with said 5 year old, since she’s the only person he talks about in the whole damn manga, and even has nosebleeds when he looks at her. It’s like you are reading a bottom of the barrel harem manga instead of a bottom of the barrel fighting shonen.
But it’s ok, we get the trick by now, the author is just throwing in villains who are even worse than obnoxious boys who get all the chicks and deviant siscons. The next one in particular kidnaps and tortures little children, so he automatically makes the reader to forget how awful our main heroes are.
This was a great volume and focuses on Asta's rescue by Julius and we come to know a little of the villains plan and recovery and fallout happens and everyone affirms their motive to be stronger and then there is Asta who is doing something interesting. And then a mixer happens, he meets this woman Rebecca and goes to her town to play with her but there is Marie also and Gauche comes in and interesting stuff happens until they are kidnapped by the order and so its upto Magic Knights to save them! Great volume and continues the character work of different members and expands on the villains and gives some cool moments to other characters!
I waited months for this book and when I finally found a second-hand copy, my puppy promptly ripped it to shreds. All things considered, it’s kind of a letdown.
Series Info/Source: This is the fifth book in the Black Clover series, I bought this.
Story (4/5): This was much better than the last volume. The story makes some progress, although it still seems pretty piecemeal. In this volume Asta has been kidnapped by the Eye of the Midnight Sun and one of the Magic Knight captains is grievously injured. Asta is rescued by the Wizard King and goes out with his buddies to a mixer to celebrate. There he meets a nice young woman with younger siblings and he decides to spend his vacation with them. However, one night all the kids disappear and it’s up to Asta and his friends to find them.
Characters (4/5): A couple of new characters are introduced but it was much better than Volume 4 where a million new characters were introduced at once. I continue to enjoy Asta and his fellow Black Bulls. I also liked that the Wizard King is in this volume more, he is an intriguing character.
Setting (3/5): The setting really wasn’t the point of the story and takes place across some rather generic fantasy towns.
Writing/Drawing Style (4/5): This manga is decently drawn and fairly easy to follow. Some of the fight scenes are a bit hard to follow but for the most part both the writing and drawing are on the higher quality end of your typical manga.
My Summary (3.5/5): Overall I liked this volume better than volume 4, but am still not a huge fan of this series. My 13 year old son loves these and I think this series is one that is much more aimed at that age group. I find the lack of cohesive story and the scattered fight scenes a bit disappointing. However, the drawing is decent quality and this is a decent manga series. It just seems to be using a lot of elements from other manga series and there isn’t a lot original here.
This honestly would have been a five star volume if not for Gauche. HOLY FUCK, I HATE THIS GUY.
I want to get my gripes with this character out of the way now so I can gush about the rest of the volume, so just bare with me for a bit, kay?
There are three main reasons why I hate Gauche so much and why he is, in my opinion, one of the worst characters in this series. Worse than Noelle's siblings, worse than the snobby royals, fuck worse than most of the VILLAINS. And they are as follows:
1. His "character trait" is meant to be funny or odd, but just comes across as HORRIBLY CREEPY. Guys, siblings being in love with their siblings is a bizarre, creepy, and frankly disgusting thing that occurs in a lot of anime, and it's no different here. Gauche gets a nosebleed EVERY TIME he thinks of his sister. WHO IS SIGNIFICANTLY YOUNGER THAN HIM. Please enlighten me as to WHY I should find that FUNNY.
2. This characteristic, like the ones every member of the Black Bulls have, is the biggest part of his personality. Now, you may be thinking, "but Jenny, you just said the other Black Bulls members have one too! Why is his so much worse than theirs?!" Simple. None of the other members' characteristics make them want to ACTIVELY HARM OR KILL THEIR TEAMMATES. I'm specifically mentioning teammates because obviously this crew will go all out against an enemy, but act differently around each other. Yes, Charmy will get violent if anyone tries to take her food, but if you happen to be around food, she's not gonna try to kill you. Yes, Luck likes to fight, but despite his recklessness he knows when to apply the brakes so he doesn't kill his teammates. If ANYONE is around Marie, GAUCHE WILL EITHER THREATEN OR TRY TO KILL THEM. JUST FOR BEING NEAR HIS SISTER. And that's what puts me over the edge with him; if he was just overly protective, I'd be cool with that, but the fact that he actually tried to kill Asta IN HIS SLEEP makes me hate him that much more. He reminds me of a worse version of Maika from Magikano, and I didn't think that was humanly possible.
3. Finally, Tabata tries to redeem him with backstory and I hate that. No amount of backstory is going to make up for a guy TRYING TO KILL HIS TEAMMATE BECAUSE HIS SISTER WANTS TO MARRY HIM.
Okay, that's done. Time to gush!
1. I have a lot more respect for Nozel thanks to him not only shutting down Solid's insults, but implying that he will avenge Fuegoleon. Nice to know he's not a completely heartless asshole.
2. We got to see Julius in action! YES, MORE PLEASE!!!
3. Leopold is so over the top, but he's such a great guy and has such a strong spirit you can't help rooting for him. Also, him proclaiming Asta as his rival was fucking hilarious.
4. Omg, Yuno writing that short message to Asta through his magic was the best. I fucking LOVE their friendship!
5. While Sally is easily one of the most stereotypically sadistic, quirky, and obnoxious scientist, I do like her design and her magic. I'd actually like to see her develop more as a villain and see where her character goes.
6. Asta is fucking adorable at the mixer! Listening to him talk about his siblings from the orphanage with Rebecca was really sweet and shows what an awesome person he is.
7. Sister Theresa is such an awesome woman! Not only is she a total badass, but her healing magic is so gentle and warm. Seriously, I could feel the warmth coming through the pages.
8. Speaking of the mixer, that whole chapter was fucking hilarious. I don't know what Finral was thinking, but he chose some of the worst people to join him.
9. I actually liked the dynamic between the brothers who kidnapped the children. Not an original dynamic, but kind of worked with the whole discussion on familial bonds in this series and specifically this volume.
10. The fights were so fucking dope, as per usual, and I loved every second of it.
Okay, that's all I've got for now. Loving this series!
I love Asta. He's joined my list of favorite male characters, just as this series has joined the ranks of favorite anime.
Only 2 issues:
1). I seriously need them to end whatever they're trying to pull with Noelle. This girl gets on my nerves.
2). Sister-loving character needs to be CHILL. if there's one trope in anime/manga I NEED to end, it's the heavily-implied, leaning-close-to incest with siblings where one seems to love their sibling alarmingly too much
Noo...now I have to wait until my latest manga order from B&N arrives so I can read more of this awesome series. Asta is such a great character, and I love seeing the journeys of Yuno and Noelle and all of the other wizards as these different villains show up. And I'm actually really looking forward to watching all of this in the anime as well.
With all going on at the moment, being able to read manga as a fun read really lightens up my days were I’m just able to take a moment and sit down with a book. Black Clover is an adventure-and-a-half filled with loveable characters and interesting magic. Can’t wait to continue on with the series.
The Royal Capital Arc ends at the beginning of this volume and the first couple of chapters are one of my favorites in the whole series. We finally get to see our quirky and excited Wizard King Julius Novachrono in action. He is definitely in my top 5 fav characters list. Other than that, Eye of the Midnight Sun Arc begins but not a lot happens except for a fight towards the end of the volume. The main reason I gave a high rating is the beginning of this volume. This new arc is longer than the previous ones so we'll see what happens next.
Gauche is such an ass. He has a sister complex (overly love his little sister, I’m not sure if it really is the definition) . He creeps me out and I don’t like him (so far in this volume).
Even though some parts of this volume is fun, I get to see more of Asta and Luck and Leo’s cuteness and The Wizard King’s dopeness, and also I think Nozel isn’t the so bad, he’s just too prideful and kind of misunderstood as he doesn’t speak much and is really cold, I didn’t enjoyed this as much as I want to. But the next volume is sure going to be awesome.
A new little arc begins, partly following a formula set in previous arcs: pairing Asta with another member of the Black Bulls to dripfeed the audience with what these allies can do. This time, it's Gauche, the siscon who specializes in Mirror Magic. Gauche only cares about protecting his sister, but, to no one's surprise, he's about to learn through Asta's example that Magic Knights are there to defend everyone.
More importantly, this volume climaxes with the arrival of Sally of the Eye of the Midnight Sun, whose design is so sexy to me that I'm afraid I'm about to do some climaxing myself...! Tabata's basically a genius; the contrast between Sally's messy hair and crazy Dr. Frankenstein personality and her tight fuckin' body with her wide hips with the openings on the side of her skirt to show off more skin, wew lads...! Kind of reminds me of Shizuku from HxH in a few ways. And Mimosa's bouncing boobers when she runs to Asta after the Wizard King brings him back to the capital...! Rebecca working "until she gets all sweaty every single day"...! Noelle and Mimosa's tits and thighs on the cover of Chapter 40...!!!!!!!!!! Sister Lily's big tit peaking out from behind her habit...! Sally's hips, thighs, and tight tummy when she reappears in Chapter 42...!!!!! Sally's slimy boobies when she's kneeling over Asta...!!!!! Sally licking and biting Asta's neck...!!!!!!! Sally's boobs loosened by Theresa burning her top...!!!!! Sally's thighs and underboob when trying to suckerpunch Asta during his battle against the giant slime...! Sally's hanging boobs and tight tummy at the bottom of the same page...! (I'm about to pass out if Tabata keeps drawing her...!!)
Oh, also: Mimosa thighs on the cover!

In anticipation for the upcoming anime adaption of Black Clover I decided it was time for me to catch up with the series. Many have rightly so called this series the magic Naruto. The similarities are surprising, but Black Clover has some quite different things to offer shonen fans. This volume picks up with the end of a major story which sees our introduction to the Wizard Emperor. Our main Asta is able to witness the power of the master of all magic. This also gives readers the exciting preview of how insanely powerful our characters and their battles will be in the near future. The second part of this book feels more like a filler arc that give Asta and the world writer/artist Tabata some more development. This volume had some humor and a little bit of action thus giving this series a pretty good balance. I feel like manga readers should give this series a chance. If you do enjoy this series I recommend you check out the following first volumes of these shonen: Fairy Tail, Vol. 1, The Seven Deadly Sins, Vol. 1, Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 1, & D.Gray-man, Vol. 1.
Black Clover, Vol. 5 (Chapters 35 to 44; entitled Light) opens on the final stage of the invasion of the royal capital of the Clover Kingdom by Eye of the Midnight Sun. This mysterious terrorist group is savoring victory when Lord Julius Novachrono, the current Wizard King, arrives. Later, Asta is in the city of Nean where Marie, the sister of Magic Knight Gauche Adlai of the Black Bulls, resides at a church-run orphanage. Gauche's obsession with his sister distracts from a plot to steal children, one that will reunite Asta with an enemy who is obsessed with him.
The Black Clover manga has grown on me. I think that I am at the point where I have to warn you, dear reader, that my reviews of this series may not be reliable because I love it so. And yes, it still reminds me of the Harry Potter series.
Black Clover Volume 5 is the second best volume yet; I think Vol. 4 is still the best early in the series. This is an entertaining battle manga with explosive battles that recall Bleach and yes, the Harry Potter films. I'll say again: let Black Clover be the four-leaf clover on your manga-reading list, with its excellent characters and superb magical mystery.
Fans of everything from Naruto to Harry Potter will definitely want to open up the spell book that is Shonen Jump title, Black Clover.
This isn’t particularly a review but I really like how reading a manga in a physical condition is different then reading it online, in the sense of that I feel like when I read the physical book and have it in my hand one it feels more interactive and also just good overall, sometimes I’ll be too caught up in the story to really read the parts between the chapters, but when I do I feel a bit refreshed and like I got an exclusive bonus too cuz it’s a lot of getting to know the author more and it’s cool. Where online it’s just the story and that’s it, no hate but yeah. Overall this volume was pretty good, I really enjoyed it, my suspicions from the last volume were way off. I feel like if they went the way I was thinking it would’ve been pretty tacky, glad it’s more of an expansion, though the wizard king he’s cool and I trust him and all but he’s gotta stay in the kingdom, stop wandering about, but it seems like he was working with stuff secretly, which no hate is great but if u knew it was gonna become something bigger probably then maybe tell someone else, but now they think there’s a traitor and I’m hype for that.
