This was such a good volume! The power at the institute has definitely shifted and it's super scary seeing where the future of the students and the school will go. I'm hoping for the best. I really hope that Soma can save the day as always!!!

Soma che mi combini? 🙈 Siamo entrati in piena distopia e il divertimento a cui siamo abituati è leggermente meno presente. Ottimo svolgimento. Sono curiosa di sapere come si concluderà lo shokugeki tra Eizan e Soma.

Still such a great manga, but I absolutely hate when people don’t fight fairly. Just because you have more money doesn’t mean you’re better than anybody else and automatically right. I can’t wait for Soma to put even more people in their place!

Food Wars! grows dark now that Azami (Erina's father) has invoked a regime change at Totsuki. I liken it to the progressively darker tone that the Harry Potter series takes as Harry's allies begin to fall and Voldemort's supporters gain traction at Hogwarts and at the Ministry of Magic, casting a dire shadow on what was previously a light-hearted boarding school romp.
Similarly, now that Central controls Totsuki, the students can forget the easier days of their past, when they mainly had to cook well and avoid expulsion. The new curriculum is under strict control by Azami. Research societies and seminars were automatically disbanded. Shokugekis have become meaningless because the judges are Central-affiliated, thereby rigging the results. And Elite Ten ninth seat Eizan (whom we previously met in the Sumire fried chicken arc) is ready to shut down all challengers, just as he plans to shut down the Polaris dorm. (It doesn't help that Erina has escaped from under her father's sizeable and quite forceful thumb by hiding out at the dorms -- where she is getting a much-needed awakening in the form of normal-person life, i.e., trying to figure out how washing machines work).
Despite the odds being stacked completely against Soma, he challenges Evil Eizan to a shokugeki (theme: very delicious jidori chicken) and needles the guy to actually cook something (instead of phoning it in, since the judges are supposed to vote for Eizan regardless). The judges taste only Eizan's dish and are prepared to declare him the winner. But in volume #18, Soma, being Soma, pulls together a dish that sounds outrageously random and a bit disgusting -- wingtip gyoza stuffed with fatty pork and seasoned with parmesan and ketchup -- and entices Eizan to try it by taunting him. Rindo, the simultaneously cute and creepy second seat, eggs him on. Seeing Eizan's stunned reaction, the bribed judges also opt to try Soma's dish...because anything Soma makes is just that irresistible. This is the sort of surprising dish I expected from Soma during his shokugeki with Subaru (not the pile of meat he added to his beef stew, no matter how delicious and masterful the judges claimed it was).
Simultaneously, Soma's dormmates are at the Polaris dorm, putting up a serious resistance against the men who've come to shut it down. They've got riot gear, left over from Polaris' golden era -- dorm name inscribed on the helmets and everything! These helmets, sticks, and a high-pressure hose (plus plenty of spirit and attitude) allow them to keep Eizan's lackeys at bay while Soma is battling it out against Eizan himself.
It's a rousing duel, with Soma at his best and his dormmates pitching in (in their own way). This unlikely win changes things at Totsuki. Though Central still rules with an iron fist, shokugekis will be honored again, and the disbanded research societies and seminars have a chance to revoke their disbandment in fair shokugekis. Almost all the key players we've come to love are represented, which is fun for the reader.
Erina continues to grow into the new version of herself as she sees the way her peers think, feel, and act, outside the protected bubble she's been living in.

Much of this book is downbeat as an evil new regime cements its control of the school. There is a lot of moping among the cast about all the setbacks suffered. Things pick up when Soma decides to resist, but based on the fact that the books in this series all end on cliffhangers, I knew even as I read that there would be no real payoff this time around, so I couldn't invest myself entirely. As always, I'm looking forward to the next volume.

Sometimes, I will think how many people in this world have such a strong determination like Soma. He has so much passion in his cooking and he never gives up and dare to face unlimited failures. How I wish most of us have that kind of courage in ourselves.

Stakes means good drama.
World: Solid art. The world building is good as there are some status quo changes, it doesn't all make logical sense but it's mwaa haa haa good so the pieces at play really work.
Story: Higher stakes makes this a fun emotionally charged arc. There is the stuff with Erina and the fun little romp at the dorm, then the gut punch of the change of status quo. Solid pacing, though the logic behind the change is pretty iffy but oh well.
Characters: Eizan is mwaa haaa haaa and that's fine cause I could do with one now. He's pretty one note but as a foil for the story serves his purpose. The stuff with Erina at the dorm is great for her development and having Alice there is nice.
High stakes makes this a strong emotionally charge arc that's hard to put down.

Quick thoughts: The new vision for the school takes shape, and dissent is not tolerated. The story is fine, well told, and still nicely character driven, but I'm not digging the extreme change in tone and while I still recognize the quality and will keep reading, right now this isn't the same series I fell in love with over the first 15 volumes.

By far Eizan is worst of the villains in this series according to my opinion. He is always using underhanded methods and cheating to get his way. He could be lined up in the same class as Erina's father. The situation doesn't look that good for both Souma and Polar Star Dorm. And yet again the volume ends with a cliffhanger. Now more political struggles are on their way and definitely things will change drastically in the Tootsuki Academy.

Food Wars: Shokugeki no Sōma!, Vol. 17 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (137–145) of the on-going manga series.
Having been ousted of being the Dean of Tōtsuki Saryo Culinary Institute, Senzaemon Nakiri pleads with Sōma Yukihira to save his granddaughter Erina Nakiri, who is restricted in her school activities and classes. Alice Nakiri, Ryō Kurokiba, and Hisako Arato help Erina escape and seek refuge at Polaris Dormitory.
Meanwhile, Azami Nakiri announces that all research societies and seminars are to be disbanded, and that the school will teach his curriculum from his organization known as Central Gourmet Institute. He orders the eviction of Polaris Dormitory in ten days.
Sōma challenges Etsuya Eizan, the Ninth Seat of the Council of Ten Masters, to a shokukgeki, to refute this eviction order. However, Eizan has Sōma watch his match against one of the societies where he has already bribed the judges to rule in Central's favor. While the other societies withdraw their challenges, Sōma challenges Eizan anyway. The theme ingredient is Satsuma Jidori chicken. Eizan sends people to evict Polaris immediately and is met with resistance. Eizan serves his Hainanese chicken rice.
This tankōbon is written by Yūto Tsukuda and illustrated by Shun Saeki. It continues the takeover of Tōtsuki Saryo Culinary Institute by former student and dropout of Azami Nakiri, which is rather expected, but interesting enough. It is typical when the status quo has been established and the reader is getting to know and enjoy – a spanner is usually thrown into the ranks to change the status quo, whether it is worth it should be determined soon in the upcoming tankōbon.
All in all, Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Sōma, Vol. 17 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

El volumen anterior nos anunció que cambios vendrían para los estudiantes de Totsuki, ahora comenzamos a ver los estragos de Asami como nuevo rector y es bastante interesante.
Las decisiones que toma nos llevan a un dilema ético muy viejo: ¿Qué prefiere la gente, seguridad o libertad? Aparentemente no puede haber una sin la otra, y el nuevo director toma decisiones para que no haya eliminaciones ni shokugekis, y que además todos los estudiantes eleven sus técnicas al recibir consejos y recetas por parte de los diez asientos ¿La trampa? Nadie podrá cocinar ninguna otra receta que no sea otorgada por la escuela, y tendrá que llevarse a cabo exactamente como la receta lo indica.
Todo lo anterior me gustó bastante ya que ayuda a solidificar al villano. Lo que no me gustó fue lo rápido que se movieron las cosas y que no se les dio el peso necesario. ¿A qué me refiero? Soma lleva casi 6 volúmenes tratando de conseguir un shokugeki con los diez asientos de Totsuki sin poder lograrlo. Ahora se enfrenta a Eizan, uno de los diez asientos y que si recordamos ya tuvieron un ligero encontronazo cuando Soma regresa a su casa y ayuda a una empresa familiar de kareegyudon. El rector eliminó los shokugeki pero tenemos a Eizan enfrentándose a Soma como si fuera cualquier cosa, algunas reglas cambiaron pero aún así, todo se movió muy rápido. Todos los asientos le negaban el duelo a Soma porque no le veían ningún beneficio y ahora se enfrenta a uno.
Espero que el siguiente volumen estabilice el ritmo y las expectativas.

Azami Nakiri è a capo della Totsuki e dimostra di essere davvero pericoloso e senza scrupoli; la stessa Erina è in pericolo perché caduta nella sua tela e viene salvata da Soma e dai ragazzi del dormitorio Stella Polare dove viene nascosta da tutti. A questo punto interviene Eizan, il più calcolatore tra i 10 Eletti, che dimostra la sua forza e il potere della nuova amministrazione Azami; questo però non scoraggia affatto Soma che decide di sfidarlo in una Food Wars per salvare i suoi compagni. Avendo visto da poco queste stesse scene nell’anime devo essere sincera e dire che alcune scene e alcune vignette del manga le ho maggiormente preferite rispetto alla sua versione animata (che comunque ha reso molto bene ad esempio le orribili facce di Eizan e la spensieratezza di Soma). Continua ad essere il mix tra divertimento e serietà che contraddistingue questa serie dove si ritrova sempre a cucinare e a godersi del buon cibo, e questa parte è molto particolare ma appassionate, la continuerò senza dubbio sia in versione animata che cartacea.

Soma and his friends deal with a new Dean of the Totsuki Institute who disbands all Associations, including making shokugeki a farce.
There is an extreme change of tone in this series that started halfway through volume 16 and continues here. Prior to this, you knew Soma and his friends would have good days, learning more and more about improving their cooking while all being there for one another. Now, with the forced closure of the Polaris dormitory, this safe environment is threatened. Can Soma save the day? On to the next volume!

Yup, creeper vibe was legit for Erina's father. I'm really curious why the Council of Ten went along with all this so willingly...the changes revealed so far are so out there. Eizan's a total creep and a cheat. And of course Soma doesn't back down.
Urgh! Can't believe I have to wait another month to see what happens! Also, someone make me Eizan's Hainanese Chicken & Rice...cause man oh man, it sounds good.

Things get worse for Totsuki. Nakiri Erina's father has taken over the academy and has instituted new stifling policies and starts shutting student bodies down. Souma takes on Eizan in a bid to prevent his dorm mates from getting evicted - while his dorm mates are physically resisting it. The whole vibe of the series changes. On a side note, Erina, on goading from Alice, runs away from home, and the new experience and people triggers a change in perspective in her.

Desde el volumen 1 hasta el volumen 30, este manga es increíble. No puedo creer la velocidad a la que lo devoré, definitivamente fue un gusto enorme encontrarme con esta historia.
Todos los volúmenes tienen un inicio y un final que te deja con muchas ganas de seguir leyendo y sobre todo, la comida, la historia, los diálogos, todo tiene un sentido y espero que todas esos platillos sean posibles en la vida real.

It had never occurred to me that this cooking manga could take such a sudden turn to the dark side of the cooking business world, or that "shokugeki" competitions could be corrupted in such ways, but this story is certainly taking cooking in a different direction.
For once, a recipe was prepared where I have at least eaten a version of it, even if simplified. At least I'm pretty sure that the chicken I was eating wasn't from a special breed, as in the story.

Chicken battle
This is where the empire of Azami Nakuru, there are no more clubs, seminars, or anything that will promote individuality. Just copies. Then Soma decides to take a shokugeki to the one destroying the value of the battle of food. Now we see what it means to stand up for what you love.

August 10, 2021Although I agree that the school has arbitrary rules and expulsions, this new Central just sounds like a bad plan in the opposite direction. I’m surprised the council went for it, given that most of them theoretically rose through the ranks by experimenting. Then again, I guess they think they’d be the chosen few allowed to experiment under these new rules.

Good read, no notes love the conflict. It don't make no sense that everyone there is simply okay with this takeover, the best part of cooking is putting your own spin on it. I don't see how the council ten did this and how the teachers and past students are just okay with this crazy man and his lackies coming in and destorying everything. If those students had have a brain they'll leave,
