Raiding Cooley
Macha, one of the Keltoi triple goddesses of war during the Iron Age circa, lays a curse on the kingdom of the Ulaidh in revenge for her humiliation. Breoga, a wine trader, tells Titus Publius, a junior tribune in Gaul, how Fergus mac Rioch, king of the Ulaidh, was tricked into surrendering his kingship.
Cathbad the draoidh prophesies that a child, born to Deichtine the daughter of the usurped king, will be the hero to protect the kingdom in its time of greatest need and announces that the child’s name will be Cú Chulainn – the Hound of Culann - whose fame will live on forever in the minds of fighting men.
A further prophecy predicts the destruction of the Ulaidh, with the birth of Deirdre of the Sorrows. Naoise, a warrior sworn to protect the kingdom of the Ulaidh, encounters Deirdre and the couple elope, leaving the kingdom open to a raid by the rapacious Medb. Cú Chulainn realises that the curse of Macha has disabled the fighting men of the Ulaidh and he vows to single-handedly protect the kingdom.
Cú Chulainn blocks the advance of Medb’s army but at great personal cost. Titus Publius, on the eve of the invasion of Britannia, encounters for the last time the old wine trader who tells him of the final battles.
