Emma Darcy is the pseudonym created by the married writing team of Wendy (1940-2020) and Frank Brennan (1936-1995). Their life journey has taken as many twists and turns as the characters in their stories, whose international popularity has resulted in over sixty-million book sales. With more than a hundred titles, Emma Darcy appeared regularly on the Waldenbooks bestseller lists in the U.S.A. and in the Nielson BookScan Top 100 chart in the U.K.

Wendy was born 28 November 1940 in Australia. Her sister was the novelist Maureen Mary (Miranda Lee). Her father was a country school teacher and brilliant sportsman. Her mother was a talented dressmaker. She obtained an Honours degree in Latin and initially worked as a high school English/French teacher. She married Frank Brennan, an Australian businessman born in 1936. She changed careers to computer programming before marriage and motherhood settled her into a community life. She was reputedly the first woman computer programmer in the southern hemisphere.

As voracious readers, the step to writing their own books seemed a natural progression and the challenge of creating exciting stories was soon highly addictive. They were published since 1983. In 1993, for the Emma Darcy pseudonym's 10th anniversary, they created the "Emma Darcy Award Contest" to encourage authors to finish their manuscripts. After the death of Frank Brennan in 1995, Wendy wrotes books on her own. She lived in a beachside property on the central coast of New South Wales, and liked to travel extensively to research settings and increase her experience of places and people.

Wendy Brennan passed away on December 21, 2020. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and sister, writer Miranda Lee.

This book had some crazy stuff in it, even for a Harlequin Presents. A quick overview of the WTFery:

- Heroine works as a personal assistant to our rich hero at his cell phone ring tone business
- She has been in lurve with our raskly hero for a long time
- Hero has a raskly grandfather who is turning 80 years old. Granddaddy just divorced his seventh blonde haired bimbo wife so the hero asks our heroine to set up a surprise at Granddady's B-day - a giant cake that a buxom blonde walks out of scantily clad like in the old movie How to Murder Your Wife.
- Heroine gets a great idea (cause she is brilliant) - she will wear a blonde wig (cause God forbid, she has dark hair!) and a skimpy red rose bikini and walk out of that cake herself to show the hero just what he was missing!
- So the heroine walks out of the giant cake at Grandpappy's 80th B-day in her red rose bikini (well she is supposedly shy but is able to wear this bikini in public at a party). Then the WTFery hits the fan. Grandpappy has the hots for this buxom (non) blonde! She hangs out with him all evening and they talk and decide to try to get the hero jealous by pretending that she is falling for 80 year old Hugh Heffner wannabe Granddad. And the hero does get jealous.
- As part of the ruse, the heroine moves in that night with Grandpappy for a few days and lets him take her shopping for new clothes! And gives her a big diamond engagement ring! How sweet. (washes mind with bleach).
- Heroine plans on skipping out in a few days, along with all the clothes her sugar granddaddy bought her but WAIT! The hero gets super jealous of grandpa and comes to take the heroine home.
- They go to her house and fall into bed. Then of course the heroine's super-Italian father walks in on them! Oh nos! She was supposed to keep her V-card until she was married! Super-Italian father (who lives in Australia not Italy - yeah I know I was confused too) is told by the hero that they are engaged so it's okay they did the horizontal tango. Hey she had on sugar grandaddy's engagement ring so it looked legit! (Creepy!)
- So now the H/h are engaged and gramps is out of the picture. Moving kind of fast huh? Well the next day they fly down to see the heroine's big ol' super-Italian family (who lives in Australia). They are all like: yeah you finally found a man, so when will you have bambinos? Apparently all the heroine's family marries young, has tons of kids and the ladies get big. She actually thinks that she hopes he is okay hugging her mom and sisters despite them not being skinny like the models he dated and she hopes he doesn't think she will get like them as soon as she has kids.
- Then he is suddenly Mr. Serious I wanna marry you (despite us dating for like three days). She is rather sensibly unable to believe him. Then she has to go and be crazy. She gets mad at the hero for not wanting to try for kids FOUR DAYS after they get together. Imagine that. Of course that means he isn't committed to her! (Run away now hero!)
- So they break up then about a week later he makes up to her and promises her babies when she goes to return sugar grandaddy's diamond ring.

This book was crazy! Who uses an 80 year old Hugh Heffner look alike to make their man jealous? I was so creeped out by the first part of this book, I was so scared the heroine was gonna start making out with gramps (shudder). The second half was more standard HP but this book was all over the place. Do I recommend this book? Only if you find Hugh Heffner sexy!

Jake Devila is a playboy through and through he loves women but has never formed any particular attachment to one, that is until he hires Merlina as his assistant. Jake looks forward to adversarial relationship he has with Merlina, she speaks her mind and challenges him in ways no one ever has. However, their relationship is completely professional.

What Jake doesn't know is that after eighteen months and a thirtieth birthday on the horizon, Merlina is planning on moving on. She wants to settle down with kids in tow and she has a perfect way to do it which causes Jake to look at Merlina in a completely different light.

This started off really good, I liked the old movie nostalgia that was thrown in but it fell a bit short with Jake. Jake doesn't seem to really understand what he feelings are for Merlina and spends most of the time just wanting to win her. Was slightly disappointing.

I liked Jake. Merharpy, er, Merlina, however, annoyed me with her constant harping. She was obsessed with Jake's sincerity, and also didn't give him any time to adjust to their new relationship and to HER wants. Miraculously, Jake turned out to be on the same page as Merlina.

4 Stars! ~ Merlina Rossi has had a thing for her boss, Jake Devila, from the day she started working for him 18 months before. Jake thrives on getting under "Mel's" skin, in fact, just calling her Mel is enough to get her going. Jake's always been a love'm and leave'm sort, going for the big-busted, skinny blonds with air upstairs. Merlina is from an old fashioned Italian family, and she's finding her career in Sydney away from the family vineyard to be very liberating. At first she was annoyed that Jake had insisted she dress hip and have her hair cut, so that she fit in more with the clients his business was targeted to. But she soon found herself enjoying the head to toe appraisals from Jake and tried in return to get under his skin. Jake's attracted but he knows he can't touch, Merlina's too important as his PA. When Jake gives Merlina an assignment he dreamed up to purposely annoy her, she does something so shockingly surprising it turns Jake's life totally upside down. Seems Merlina is tired of her single life and is ready to start a big Italian family of her own, and she's got her sights set on Jake as the Daddy. And she may succeed with the help of Jake's debonair playboy grandfather.

This is one of those delightfully fun reads that keep you routing both characters on to their HEA. Merlina really shakes Jake's world and when he finds he's losing her, he realizes he wants her for always. It's getting over the commitment issues and learning what the true meaning of family is, that's getting in the way.

The Heroine Merlina Rossi just turns 30 at the beginning of the book and the Hero Jake Devila is 35.

The good / enjoyable parts -
The war of wills between the Hero and Heroine. (Especially in the beginning of the book)
The Heroine’s increasing comfort level with the trendy clothes that she’s expected to wear was good to read about. (The Heroine is curvy and has body issues)
The Heroine delivers a very nice set down to the Hero with aplomb when she resigns. (Yay!)
The Hero’s Grandfather’s advice to the Heroine (especially the counter argument to the Heroine’s objections)
The Hero finally recognising what a good catch the Heroine is and setting out to woo her...👌🏼👌🏼

The not so enjoyable parts -
The unrequited love on the part of the Heroine. (An oft repeated theme that is really tiresome)
Reference to the Hero’s love life with his current girlfriend.
The Hero waking up to the Heroine’s supposed beauty / charm only after his Grandfather shows his interest in the Heroine.🙄
The Heroine getting engaged to the Hero’s 80 year old Grandfather!! (Unbelievable)🙄

Eyes description -
Lots of lovely references to eyes and the emotions in them!!
(Examples......... pending)

Overall a decent enjoyable read.

This book is hot, the author has a way with words, a way to describe passion that an aspiring author can only hope to have one day.
There is a lot of humor at the Hero's expense even though he is all alpha male and i like that. I also like the family feel it has even though this is supposed to be a 9-5 book.

“The Playboy Boss’s Chosen Bride” is the story of Merlina and Jake.

Boss and secretary who are wildly attracted to each other enjoy their sparring sessions. He enjoys teasing her, she gives him right back. He also makes her change her look from a good Italian girl to a sexy femme fatale.
When the heroine decides to become a blonde bunny and resign after his grandfathers birthday, the hero realizes he cannot give up on her and finally gets his head out of his bum.

Anyways, she comes from a conservative family, he has some inhibitions, drama occurs before a happy ending.

I think it was ok. Few elements threw me off but overall it was a nice one time read.

I ended up liking the book in the end, but a few thins kind of put it off for me. First, the constant playing of games. I got irritated with the constant I NEED TO WIN attitude that played heavily. Also, a bit skeevy was the heroine using the 80 year old grandpa to make the hero jealous. I just didn't understand the logic of it and the fact that all three went along with it just boggles my mind. And those were only two things I thought that took away from the book... not to mention the constant reference to skinny blonde bimbos (because yeah, all blondes HAVE to be skinny, blond, and bimbo) and that all Italian women are obsessed with food, overly fleshy, and constantly push family (oh no, family) on you regardless of your thoughts or feelings. I got a bit irritated at this... the constant family interference on both sides was a bit much. I didn't ever feel a real connection from the hero and heroine. I always felt they were boxed in and forced and it all seemed a bit forced.

Cute story but nothing special. I also thought that Merlina's family was a bit too overbearing for my taste.

This is contemporary and while I'm not sure what year it was published, it's presumably @ 2000 when buying ring tones was a new "thing".

Merlina is in love with her boss to the point that she changes her wardrobe and hair to get the job. She comes from a traditional Italian family and is sort of the black sheep in that she moved to Sydney, works, and is fast approaching 30 without a husband or potential husband on the horizon.

She and Jake have a one-upsmanship verbal sparring thing going on which escalates considerably when Merlina decides to leave his employ.

Jake realizes he was an idiot. Sexy times ensue. An angry father quickly follows. A marriage proposal is quick on his heels.

There is a bit of drama surrounding Jake's desire, or lack thereof, for children but everything works out in a big Italian sort of way.

Unbelievably unrealistic! H goes off half cocked and believes that his 80 year old grandpa will marry his 30 year old secretary and gets jealous about it and pursues and proposes. For 2 years the H has been playboying with thin blondes and 3 days after she comes out of a cake wearing a 'rose' bikini and gets proposed by his grandfather, he proposes marriage to h the sensible secretary in her new avatar. But despite the stupidity of this plot proposition it redeems itself due to the writing style and a few secondary characters who are hearty italians.

Funny and fast-paced

Mid-three stars. It's a funny little story of a playboy and his assistant whose game of oneupmanship quickly turned to love. I liked that Merlina could hold her own against Jake and wouldn't let him walk all over her.

I liked how this book started out, with Jake DeVila constantly tormenting his PA, Merlina, pushing her tolerance with his clever little games just a little further and further until she decides she's had enough and finally gets back at him. I also loved his explanation for this at the end of the book . I even didn't mind so much when she sort of acted the skeevy gold-digger and pretended to be engaged to Jake's grandfather. Because Jake was jealous and suddenly realized he'd always sort of wanted Merlina, but wouldn't let himself cross professional boundaries. It wasn't until they'd actually gotten together and Merlina boarded the crazytown express, that the book went downhill quite a bit.

First off, Merlina's constant internal nagging about how Jake wasn't measuring up, and how Jake was a playboy and not a family man and didn't do this right and OMG, just shut up already. Honestly, most of the things she complained about she'd already known about him, so why go after him if he's not good enough? Everything else I think comes with time. She starts nagging about his lack of commitment after being with him for 2 days. She constantly tells herself that he doesn't love her and how can she trust that this will last, when she's only been with him for 2 days. Give it a little time! She could have chosen ANY guy and there's no guarantee it's going to last. But Merlina wants to start a family yesterday. So she's not satisfied waiting. Not even for 3 days. Because she loses her shit when Jake is unwilling to risk a baby and grabs a condom...on their 2nd day together. Seems to me it's suddenly the "playboy" who's being sensible and the "traditional family woman" who's being reckless. Risking a baby with a guy you've been romantic with for less than 48 hours (and who was a womanizer before that) is not smart (nor is it, as she supposes, a sign of the guy's commitment). Merlina just lost my respect at that point. The ending was okay, but there needed to be much greater emphasis placed on the fact that Merlina had actually decided that she wanted Jake more than she wanted to have a family. That was glossed over but a major realization and proof of love on her part.

Very formulaic, but still, it was fun to read !

Classic playboy hero, Jake. Even his grand dad is a sworn playboy at the age of 80 ! So what can you expect from the rich, spoilt, hero! One thing I liked about him is his profession - he owns a mobile ring tone services company ! Raking in millions with caller tunes, the 90s. Cool, huh :)))

Our prim and proper heroine is Merlina. Italian to the hilt. Replete with curvy figure, boisterous Italian family, very keen on marriage and settling down etc etc.

Her only problem in life is Jake. She works for him as his PA, you see. She is crazy about him. But he hasn't shown any lover like symptoms for the last 18 months of her employment with him.

The book has a lot of Jake's thoughts voiced out too. The book actually starts with Jake planning and plotting different ways to rile his "always politically correct" PA. He wants to shake her out of her poise. Not with sexual intentions, but he feels invigorated, enjoys the zing everytime they lock horns.

So when Jake plots one such mischief act, Merlina totally knocks him out with a counter punch. By emerging out of a birthday cake in a bikini !@!@>#@##@##$ Enough said, its fun to read this part. So I am not saying anything more ...

After that, Jake is forced to sit back and take notice of Merlina as the sexy kitten, who kept her sexuality hidden. What follows after that is Jake pursuing Merlina. And Merlina trying to balance her crazy love for him and her inner urge to settle down, have a family. How Jake rises admirably to meet both her wishes - everlasting love & a lovely family - thats the rest of the story.

Fun read. Realistic at times, totally crazy , zany at times. 4 stars !!

Boring

This was such a sloooooow read. I put it down and picked it up 3x and only finished because I like to finish completely before I move to another one. The characters were okay just seems disjointed and inconsistent. One minute the H and h wanted to be challenging and the next they just caved in and did this the whole book. I should have listened to the other reviews. They’re right

Very bland. The characters both talked of their 'heated' relationship before the book...none of it came across when they started dating. Everything was rushed, fake engagement(s), and family involvement but no character development for any side characters.
