“Djinn: Cursed (New Sentinels #1)” is Erik Schubach’s creative version of the age-old story of the curse of the genie and the genie’s wishes.

MC Angelina discovers she’s being hunted by ruthless killers, and escapes them by sprouting wings after being thrown off a building. Her character is a good balance between being awestruck at the changes in her life, anger, fear, acceptance and a tremendous devotion to her friends. MC Dorian is hilarious, and the banter between Angel, Dorian and almost-MC bad-ass Haley is delightful. The fact that all three are lesbians keeps things interesting, and the reader guessing at a few points, but in typical Schubach fashion, there is no explicit action…just a couple tender kisses. I’m sure Schubach must think of more than one steamy scene for his terrific lesbian characters, and perhaps even writes down a few. I sure wish he’d share them!!!!

The bad guys in “Djinn” are truly bad, and some of the interactions between them and Angel are appropriately unpleasant. During the rough scenes, the witty banter scenes and the many Angel-thinking-to-herself scenes, narrator Allyson Voller does a fantastic job. I’d grown so used to hearing Hollie Jackson narrate Schubach’s books I was apprehensive about a different narrator for this series, but Voller does a great job!

There are currently three more books in this “New Sentinels” series, and each book appears to be standalone. After listening to 5* “Djinn” I’ll certainly be listening to more in the series!

Looks like another winner

Erik's stories are always entertaining and enduring, I enjoy the human factor most of all. Angel is experiencing many changes in her life as well as lost but through it all with a little help from Dorian and Hailey, she comes out stronger. The main characters are funny and lovable, the story is interesting and well written. Anticipating the next installment.

Angelina Drake magically sprouts wings and gains the ability to fly as she hurls towards an otherwise certain death at the bottom of Coit Tower in San Francisco from which she has been unceremoniously tossed by one of an endless cast of bad guys. She wishes that she knew why she is suddenly a target of all this perilous pursuit, and suddenly, she is endowed with the entire history of her predicament. Yeah... It says it right there in the title. She is a Djinn - a genie. She grants wishes.

The author does a great job of setting up the constraints and dangers of Angel's wish-making, thus saving the reader from some sort of wish-a-palooza. With the help of two or three intriguing outcast female characters, Angel learns to run from and then fight back against the endless cast of chasing bad guys. And in the midst of all this action, develop a sweet relationship.

On the whole... this book was really FUN to read! I enjoyed it a lot. The author seems intent to infuse the story with a little humor, mainly through the banter between the characters. There is some vicious and violent torture that occurs in the story. The banter provides an outlet to the horrors that occur. Sometimes I felt that the banter went a little too far, occasionally became tedious, and diffused the peril too much. But, still... it was fun. At the same time, the extensive focus on the movement of Angel's wings - how she draped them around her love interest, for example - added to the romance of the tale.

Some events seemed a little contrived. Some allies popped up late with little explanation. It was not perfect, but I loved the story and the creative character cast and will definitely look forward to the next book in the series!

2.5 stars I guess, I am not sure why but I did not enjoy this one and I can't really tell why. It did have some data dumps but that was not the main reason. I was not invested in the main character I guess and that made everything else fall apart. I only found the last 1/4 of the book even half ways interesting and at that point I just wanted it to be over. Others have like it so maybe you will as well but I just did not get much enjoyment out of this one. I can't see myself continuing with this series.

I need more!

Great book. But I was vastly disappointed there isn’t an sequel to this story. This seems so incomplete! How does Angel break her curse? How did Billie turn out? Does Angel eventually meet her daughter? So many questions.

I found this story interesting even though I have never really read on this subject before and would like to learn more.
However, Mr. Schubach's editor needs to do a better job. There were a lot of spelling/grammar issues just like Mr. Schubach's earlier books.
My rating is 3 stars for the book and 1 star for the author.

Another good start to an interesting series. I have been on a bit of a Schubach kick as of late. I have been going through his catalog on Audible. So far I have really liked all of his books and this is no exception. I am looking forward to see how he brings the characters together with the others stories to resolve the open plot points.

I first sampled this book off Amazon, way back when it was relatively new. I finished the sample and marked it mentally as not for me. Years later I read 'Elfed in New York' and all it's sequels and loved them. This book again appeared as a suggestion when searching on Amazon. I thought to myself that I really like Schubach so I will give it another go and I did. So now, I am impressed with how Mr. Schubach has improved as an author in the 6 years between the two books being published.
For me this was vapid and overly violent with 2 dimensional characters and a ridiculously undeveloped story line. I can't imagine how anyone could get to the end of this story without continuously murmuring 'Why don't you...', but ultimately, in my opinion, nothing happens and it ends much as it begins with regard to the story.
I am glad there are those who have enjoyed this, but I wonder how they would rate 'Elfed in New York' and all the other outstanding books if they gave this one 4 or 5 stars.

A little darker than his usual fare
It's just like a Erik Schubach novel except that it has murders and a 2 scenes of torture.
everything else is what fans have come to expect.

The story wasn’t bad, but I didn’t really enjoy it. I’m not sure why but I found it irritating. I know it’s fiction and a fantasy, but quite a few things just felt illogical. I also like my heroines to be ruthless when necessary, e.g. if someone has killed my best friend, maimed another and tortured me for hours, I think I could happily kill them in order to escape.
Finally I hated the ending, which left far too many things unresolved.

Original story

I thought I had posted a review, guess I forgot. This book was awesome. The witty humour and character development are suburb. I would love to see more books in this series.
