Kelley Armstrong

Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers' dismay. All efforts to make her produce "normal" stories failed.

Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She's the author of the NYT-bestselling "Women of the Otherworld" paranormal suspense series and "Darkest Powers" young adult urban fantasy trilogy, as well as the Nadia Stafford crime series. Armstrong lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids and far too many pets.

Liked the Gabriel and Patrick stories.
Liv and Ricky's story wasn't as entertaining, the mystery with the missing baby was quite good but Liv/Ricky weren't all that engaging, everything they said/did was so generic, especially compared to Gabriel/Patrick. Also, there was way too much sex, Liv/Ricky read more like horny teens than a serious, loving couple.

The Orange Cat and other Cainsville Stories is #3.5 in the Cainsville series. It should be read after book 3, Deceptions.

This novella inclues:
- The Orange Cat: Gabriel story based on Poe’s The Black Cat, originally in Nevermore
- Bad Publicity: a new Patrick story
- Lady of the Lake: a new Liv & Ricky novella (set right after Deceptions)

The Orange Cat is a prequel. Gabriel is the narrator. He has a case involving an orange cat.

Bad Publicity is a prequel. The narrator is Patrick. The story has to do with his book writing career.

Lady of the Lake takes place right after Deceptions (which is why you must read Deceptions first). The narrators are Ricky and Olivia. The story is about their vacation in Cape Breton and a case that they are involved in.

These stories were very enjoyable. And now I can't wait to start Betrayals.

I'm sorry, all I took away from this is that Ricky experimented with dudes and that Olivia thinks that's hot.

Was there more?

*I received this collection free by pre-ordering 'Betrayals,' Book 4 of the Cainsville series*

The Orange Cat - 4 Stars
A simple little tail that really had nothing to do with the Cainsville series other than featuring Gabriel Walsh. While Gabriel may be described by those around him as cold and calculating, those who have read the books know that…well, he is…but there is so much more. So while he has won criminal cases that have involved a drunk driver causing significant injury to a mother of four, he shows he cares about a being as simple as a cat with one eye.

There is a thread of supernatural, and while it’s not really explained where this came from, or why, Gabriel never really questions it. He rarely does.

The world had its mysteries. He accepted that as readily as he accepted the existence of bacteria. He could not see either, but he did see both in action, and that was enough.

This story reinforced Gabriel as a solid character more than anyone else. Although I did like to see the cat get his revenge, and his owner completing losing his mind and going to jail. I like to think that after a 20 year prison sentence the cat will still be waiting for him at the home, and will return until his dying day.

Bad Publicity - 2 Stars
This one ended so suddenly. I turned the page and was confused when the tone changed entirely…but I then noticed that I had started the next story. In fact I didn’t really have to get a chance to settle down and involve myself in the story before it was over.

Patrick is a very minor character in the Cainsville series, meaning that he doesn’t get a lot of page time, but he means a lot more to the story as a whole. There is really nothing new here, and nothing really happens. Which is why I guess I was disappointed. I know nothing of great significance can happen in these stories, that would ruin the books, but this story was about a basically a warning that badness is coming. Which I kind of expected….

Lady of the Lake - 4 Stars
Still dealing with the fallout after the events in Deceptions, Olivia and Ricky finally got to take their vacation. Unfortunately the fae world is not so easily ignored, and the two find themselves enmeshed in a mystery that involves a water fae, a path to the Otherworld, and a missing human baby. I do like it that Liv and Ricky don't shy away from what they are, but are learning to embrace it. And it's because Thi Si so,etching they can share together.

"A skeleton in an underwater cavern is virtually a flashing Adventure Here sign."
Her face screwed up. "I do not understand."
'To give her the benefit of the doubt," Ricky said. "Not everyone sees a dead body as a call to adventure."
"Weird."
"I know."

The chapters switch to being from Liv's point of view, which is in first person, and Ricky, which is in third. An interesting choice, and I think it would have been nice to have Ricky's parts in first person as well, just to give the reader a better sense of him but also to use this medium to give something new. The story was pretty good, bit I do not like the idea of being trapped in caverns underwater...I have their fear of being lost in the middle of the ocean and not knowing which way is up or down. So yeah, that bit where Live didn't know which way she was swimming was...terrifying. But that's likely just me.

The Orange Cat was a fun read but I didn't enjoy it was much as I did the last novella from Gabriel's POV. That's mainly because this one didn't provide me with insight into Gabriel's childhood. Still, depending on what that cat really was (and maybe what Olivia's cat TC really is), this story might prove more interesting if it provides some background info on a future story arc.

Bad Publicity was okay but I only enjoyed the parts that gave me some insight into what Patrick thought of his son.

Lady of the Lake was a fun look into Olivia's relationship with Ricky. But mostly, I liked it because a good chunk of it was in Ricky's POV, which we haven't seen much of before. I'm still a lot more invested in Gabriel's eventual happiness then Ricky's, but I can now say that I like him as a character. He understands how important Olivia's friendship with Gabriel is to her and he's not being a jealous prick about it. Not even within the privacy of his own thoughts.

This is a prequel to the Cainsville Tales by Kelley Armstrong. If you preordered her last book or reserved it at the library, you could email her lovely assistant for a copy. I had preordered Betrayals months before it came out but only recently realized I could get this book. I'm glad amazon keeps all your prior invoices available. It is a nice little gift that the author gave to her fans. I thought that was very sweet of her and enjoyed the stories very much.

The Orange Cat was my favorite from all the shorts because Gabriel is the narrator and I love Gabriel. The Orange Cat is a take on Edgar Allen Poe's Black Cat (which ironically I read for the first time last fall). Gabriel has a case involving an orange cat. The story itself is similar to Poe's but I loved all the bits she added in between that gave us more insight into Gabriel when he was young.

Great collection of short stories from the Cainsville universe. Loved the sexy Ricky story, and the cat you should never cross story, plus that spoiler about the last book in the series at the end OMG, I can't wait to read that last book!

The first story (orange cat) was just ok, and I put the book down for a while. The other stories were great, and made me much more excited about the final book, which hopefully will come out soon!

I got this e-book because I pre-ordered Betrayals.

Overall this was a fun read with 3 short stories and the first chapter of Rituals, book 5 in this series. The first two short stories are very short, but give a bit of character depth, personality and background that was a nice touch. The stor about the orange cat is a bit creepy and was told from Gabriel his point of view. Bad Publicity was a Patrick story which was quite fun with a few small twists and I liked how we get an idea of how he thinks about Gabriel.

The story Lady of the Lake was a lot longer than the first two short stories and I also enjoyed that one the most. It follows a mystery Liv and Ricky run into on their vacation, this takes place between book 3 and 4 if I am correct. The story was enjoyable and worked well as a short story and made me want to pick up betrayals as soon as possible. My only complaint was that there was very little Gabriel, I am team Gabriel and he did/ said something stupid at the end of book 3 and Liv and Ricky aren't too happy with him right now. It's hard to see their relationship a bit strained.

These stories remind me why I love this series so much and had me looking forward to the next book. I'll have to read betrayals soon as I am looking forward to be back in this world.

I got this book free for pre ordering Betrayals. I loved this. 2 short stories and a novella in the Cainsville universe. There is also a chapter for the next book after Betrayals. It cautions the reader to stop until they have read Betrayals. I had a really had time putting it down. I cannot wait to read Betrayals!

The Orange Cat- A rather amusing tale.

Bad Publicity - Patrick being a father, not a good one but the feels are real.

Lady of the Lake -A lovely vacation between one of my favourite couples of all time.

Rituals Sneek Peek - Gabriel's mother is back, maybe? Ooooh drama.

I loved the story about orange cat! The other stories are great too. We learned more about Patrick. We learn more about Liv's and Ricky's relationship, and how it's evolving. I want to find out more about Gabriel. He deserves the girl in the end. That's my wishful thinking. Great read! I can't wait for new book next week! ❤️❤️❤️

This is a great little collection, I'd already read Gabriels story (but loved reading it again!) and there were two new Cainsville stories, one with Patrick and one with Liv & Ricky, both were brilliant!

I really liked Gabriel's and Patrick's stories. Olivia and Ricky's story has fun even though I'm still not here for the plot. The preview of the final book gave nothing away and has me crying over the year long wait we have till it's release.

I really enjoyed this short story collection and sneak peak of the final Cainsville book. I cannot wait until next year when it comes out. as for the short stories my favorite was the Orange Cat. I had read it before in another short story collection and I think that man got everything he deserved.

In the midist of waiting for a review book, I once again turn to my poorly neglected kindle filled with books and a variety of short stories! I was eyeing the short stories particularly and picked up Kelley Armstrong’s The Orange Cat! I didn’t realize this one wasn’t that old, as it was a pre-order gift for ordering Betrayals! Which I did!

As with most short story collections, I’ve broken this down into mini reviews for each story. Being that there were only three should make things rather easy!

The Orange Cat

The first story was the title one! It was an interesting little story involving Gabriel, his client, and his stalker…an orange cat. This takes place when Gabriel was a fresh new lawyer out of school, he’d already won a case, but instead of joining that firm he decided to start his own. Gabriel takes on a case that was rather weird, even for him, but money is money.

His client wants Gabriel’s help in getting rid of a pest. That pest happens to be an orange cat. The cat has done nothing but stare at him ever since one night when the client, in a drunken fit, took out one of its eyes. No matter what he does, the cat always comes back home and stares at him.

It was kind of creepy in a way. And I absolutely loved it!!! The end was rather chilling as well! It’s a befitting story to Cainsville!

Rating 5/5 stars

Bad Publicity

This is a story about Patrick, the renowned author who’s also one of the fae. He’s been watching over his son Gabriel from time to time, but the story is more about when a publicist starts hounding him around town. She’s a young new thing to the industry, looking to make a name for herself and what better way than to represent Patrick! He does his best to dodge her attempts, but then Lisa, the publicist, finds a hole in his contracts where he is obligated to make an appearance should he ever win an award.

Patrick suspects foul play. He’s starting to think his publicist is someone that’s more than what meets the eye. And when the location of the award ceremony is in a shady part of Chicago, well, Patrick will have to do what he must!

Things were definitely surprising in this one. It’s been awhile since I was last in Cainsville, so my memory isn’t too sharp on things, but since these two were sort of prequel stories it didn’t really hinder my enjoyment!

Rating 5/5 stars

Lady of the Lake

This was a bit longer than the previous two stories but still ultimately enjoyable! It takes place after Betrayals, Liv and Ricky are on their road trip vacation and what was supposed to be a brief pit stop for a little fun, turns into an investigation that grips at both of them. There’s a little lake/pond in the woods off the highway where they made their little stop, and they find that it’s not entirely uninhabited.

There’s a particular fae there who has quite the backstory. Well, most of the backstory comes from legends, both human lore and fae lore. We get a more precise rendering of who this particular fae is, not name-wise but story-wise later. It’s after this encounter though, that Liv and Ricky learn that a local girl has lost her baby; mean that she’s gone missing, possibly a kidnapping. It’s unclear. She’s a young mother and completely distraught. Liv and Ricky don’t plan on helping out right away, but they suddenly feel compelled to, that really is more a compulsion of morals than magic!

This was quite the intricate story! Plenty of good fae lore and myths mixed in, as well as the myth we’ve been dealing with for the entire series to date. Which its name and exact spelling are escaping me at the moment. I know it’s not your typical English language spelling, so hence my not recalling it precisely.

This was just a nice little taste of the world of Cainsville and I quite enjoyed the story! It’s hard to pick a “team” for Liv, as both guys have their merit. And then there’s Gabriel, who’s Gabriel. He’s a tough cookie. You never know what to expect from him. And while he wasn’t directly in this story, he was a part of it! A fun little adventure to the series! I cannot wait to see how things will come to a conclusion in the final book in August! I withheld from reading the sneak peek, for two reasons: 1, I still need to read my notes regarding Betrayals so I can get an idea of what happened, and 2, I just can’t bring myself to read samplers. It’s too torturous! LOL!

Rating 4.5/5 stars

This was really one great little set of stories! Highly enjoyable!

Overall Rating 5/5 stars—yeah, I’m rounding up! ;)

Review first published on My Blog.

Free collection if you pre-ordered the 4th book in the Cainsville series, Betrayals, and features three stories from that universe.

The Orange Cat - Gabriel has never had a client quite like this man. He has come in and told Gabriel that he has tried to get rid of his cat many times and it always comes back. He is sure the last time, he lost his temper and broke the cat's neck but the next day it was back. Now Gabriel grew up with time in Cainsville so he knows weird things can happen but this one may just be the one that stumps him.

Bad Publicity - Patrick has always made it a point in his writing career to make sure his contracts keep him from having to go out and do any kind of publicity since that is the last thing he wants. Unfortunately, he is ambushed by his new "publicist" who manages to find a loophole and that's when things take a turn from the mundane.

Lady of the Lake - Ricky and Liv decided to go on a vacation at the end of book 3 and this takes place during their motorcycle trip. They are up in Canada and find a lovely little lake to stop and refresh themselves. Of course they manage to find a portal and a water fae there. They escape and promise not to go back until they are begged by a young woman in the town where they are staying to help look for her missing baby and they realize they may just know where to find her.

A lovely collection of stories that help fill in and enrich the characters we know and enjoy but aren't necessarily needed for the main story but fulfill that desire to know more.

I liked the story about the cat. And the insight into Patrick was cool too. But the third story about Ricky and Olivia annoyed me. I never thought I'd be saying this but there was just too much sex. That's the only thing they do. Everything resolves about sex with them. And it was impossible to ignore that they don't belong together and they know it too.

Ok set of stories
The Orange Cat was the most random and therefore I liked it most. I like the idea of a cat refusing to stop tormenting its terrible owner even past deaths door.
The last story was the longest drawn out and kind of annoying to boot.

Only read the Orange Cat, since I didn't get the the e-book. Based a Poe story, it is a short story with Gabriel and a client with a cat...won't say any more than that. Nice little bit of filler for the next book, Betrayals.
