Ahoy there, shipmates! Join Jim Lad and Matilda as they sail the seven seas (and the coast of Dull-on-Sea) in search of treasure in this latest adventure from Jonny Duddle featuring the Jolley-Rogers.

A fun and exciting pirate adventure! This was the third Jolley-Rogers book I read to my 5-year-old and she loved it. The main characters are the children again: the girl is Matilda from Dull-On-Sea whilst the boy is Jim Lad who happens to be a pirate. I took one star off because the Dad character is kind of portrayed as a comical, useless idiot whilst the Mum is the more capable of the two (as it seems so usual in popular media portrayals these days) and I just think it's a shame: both can and should be positively depicted. Other than that, I would suggest people read the Pirate-Cruncher first before this one so the story makes more sense. It's great fun!

Matilda se beste vriend, Basjan, is deel van ‘n seerowergesin, die Van der Branders. Hy bevaar die oseane saam met sy ouers, sy sussie, Knoetsie, die skeepshond, Bene, sy oupa, met die klassieke houtbeen en sy papegaai, Kraa-Kraa. Toe sy dus ‘n bottel met ‘n skatkaart vanaf Grootgaapbaai se skeepsmuur aan haar vishoek gevang kry, is die Van der Branders die logiese bondgenote in die voorgenome skattejag. Daar is egter ‘n hele paar kinkels in die hierdie skeepskabel: die skat is nie net op ‘n onbekende eiland nie, dit word deur ‘n monster bewaak en die monster se gunsteling kos is… seerowers !
Die boek, die derde in die reeks, is ongetwyfeld op jonger lesers gemik, maar ek het lanklaas soveel pret met ‘n boek gehad; die mees absurde situasies verskaf deurentyd genot: Oupa se houtbeen word gesteel; die skip het ‘n Jeep aan boord wat letterlik enige plek kan ry; daar is karakters met name soos Koning Toonhaar en Piet Piesang; die ontmoeting met die monster ontaard in ‘n moderne weergawe van Jona en die vis, maar eindig in ‘n ouetehuis in plaas van Ninevé, en die leser kwyl deurentyd vir vars gebakte piesangbrood.
Die oorspronklike titel is ‘The Jolley-Rogers and the monster’s gold’ en die Afrikaanse vertaling is meesterlik deur Kobus Geldenhuys gedoen. Die swart- en wit illustrasies en die wisseling in font-groottes skep die indruk van ‘n strokiesprent en sal jong lesers vermaak, na hulle asems laat snak, hulle oë laat rek en laat skater.

"TENTACLE!" hollered Squawk."
Welcome to a new Jolley-Rogers story, they are back again, and this time they are hunting for a new treasure, of course taking Matilda with them (how magical that it is Half-Term for her). But the trip won't be going all that fine, we got a scary fiddler (who can't do anything but sing terribly bad shanties), we got monkeys, bananas, and TENTACLES! Oh and did I mention the terrible monster they are attached to? No, well, then, MONSTER!
I really loved this book and I was laughing out loud many many times. And it was also sweet, I loved that Matilda was fishing at the harbour to get mail from her best friend (though I do wonder how such mail gets attached to a hook, magic perhaps?). The adventure this time is fun, though I did miss Matilda in it all. She does participate for a big part, and has some important stuff to do, but I just missed her when the battle became truly real.
Still the last battle was exciting and I was just cheering for everyone. I do hope we won't meet the monster again, man, that is one creepy monster.
The book really flew by, I read it in one go, I just couldn't put it down it was so much fun.
Of course we also have great illustrations which were really fun to look at. I loved seeing all the pirates, the big bad monster (TENTACLES!). Jonn Duddle has a great art style which I really like.

"Książka ta jest naprawdę fajna i miło spędziłyśmy czas z córką podczas jej lektury. Bohaterowie bardzo nam się spodobali (zwłaszcza dziadek!), gdyż są sympatyczni i zróżnicowani, a cała przygoda okazała się być ciekawa i wciągająca. Poza tym jest to idealna propozycja dla dzieci uwielbiających pirackie opowieści. Tu nie braknie bowiem ani śpiewanych szant czy też szalonych przygód z udziałem… Nie, tego wam nie zdradzę ! Jeśli chcecie, sięgnijcie po tę książkę i przekonajcie się sami "

Fun book that we love reading aloud with piratey accents! The ending was great, especially that last word!! Ready for there to be another book in the series...

Well, the illustrations are outstanding! So detailed and rich. They completely immerse you in the world Duddle has made. And the story is a nice little adventure.
But why did we need to have the dad dreaming about a mermaid with a shell bra?! To both include it in the story AND illustrate it in a kids' book was a bit gross. To put the idea of dads dreaming about scantily clad women, who are not their wives, in the heads of children is just very disappointing and not remotely funny. And why did the list of entertainment for the retired elderly pirates include dancing girls?! Again, it was just creepy.
Also, the puppet man will be pretty unsettling for lots of little/sensitive kids, and there's no explanation given or even confirmation that he is a puppet.
But I did love that at the end *SPOILERS:*... they gave the majority of the gold towards the retirement home for all the pirates. I wondered whether Duddle would talk about greed and treasure, seen as he'd referred to it earlier, so it was nice to see the family use the gold in this way.
I also loved that when the girls got left behind they did something really cool and saved the day, but it was all done without labouring a point about girl power.
So overall I'd recommend it, but maybe skip over the page with the mermaid if you're reading it to your kids.

Чергова химерна історія в серії про піратів "Веселі Роджерси". Попередній том також видався мені досить дивним, бо автори змішати в одну купу піратів, відьом та інтернет-крамниці, але й цей не поступається йому, хоча тут і не фігурують сучасні технології. Здається, цього разу автори надихалися біблійною легендою про велетенське морське чудовисько Левіафана, яке могло ковтати людей цілими.
Починається історія з того, що Тіллі виловлює біля берега послання в пляшці — так зазвичай надсилає їй звісточки її друг-пірат Джим, який мешкає на кораблі. Проте цього разу це не листи від Джима — це карта скарбів! Як усім відомо, пірати полюбляють скарби, тож Тіллі випрошує в батьків дозвіл вирушити на пошуки цього скарбу разом із Джимом і його родиною на справжнісінькому піратському кораблі! Щоправда, що них приплітається який підозрілий старий скрипаль... Карта приводить їх до острівця, де повно бананів, мавп і папуг ара і де вони дізнаються, що скарб, за яким вони полюють, належить велетенському морському монстру, який заковтнув уже дуже багатьох піратів...

Matilda rejoins the Jolley-Rogers on another buccaneer adventure after finding a bottle with a treasure map in it. They head out on The Blackhole for the mysterious island taking along the fiddler who drew the map and sings foreboding treasure hunting shanties. Mayhem breaks out when Grandpa’s peg leg is stolen by a menacing sea monster, and their ship soon ends up at the not-so-deserted Banana Island with monkeys, a grizzly old pirate, and Banana Bill (a baker extraordinaire). When the Jolley-Rogers leave Matilda behind on the island for safety while they locate the Pirate Cruncher sea monster, they find themselves in great peril. It’s up to Matilda to save the day with a plan—which might, or might not, include what to do with ninety-nine retired old pirates and a boatload of bananas and gold pieces! Clever, black-and-white digital illustrations contribute to this romping good transitional book and great read aloud for young swashbucklers.

Jonny Duddle is a great writer and the illustrations are second to none. we were looking forward to this new book coming out but found it not as good as the first two novels. But still a good swashbuckling read.

A good story and lots of fun, did find it jumped a little from one section to others and some of the words were a little big for younger readers. Did assume you understood pirate lingo. Overall good but maybe better for 7 or 8 year olds.
