The Rude Tenderness of Our Hearts by Saket Suryesh is a unique title with two completely opposite words. As title suggested it is indeed collection of short stories with sad ending.

As mentioned correctly in blurb, each story has something in common which would be "the ending" from my point of view. Except 1-2 stories each story has sad ending. I cannot tell stories in brief like other book reviews as in this case stories are already short one ;). But I liked the way story was brought in front of readers.

Well, I found most of the endings predictable. Still it was good book which can be finished in 1-2 sittings.

If I did not know you and had to recommend a book to you, it will be surely this one. For Sure.

Verdict first this time : This book comes highly recommended. Very high on my rec list

Such is the sheer force of melancholy this book instigated in me, that I consider this best compilation of short stories I have read in the year.

Moving and poignantly written short tales of affection between two people.

They sometimes are a father and a hot-headed son, sometimes a man and his limited prowess that can't protect his daughter's honor.

And sometimes, of a father who kills his own flesh and blood in the name of marital honor.

Heart-rending and tenderly crafted, I cherished every single page of this work by Mr. Saket Suryesh.

Though there are certain shortcomings that are attributed to incomplete editing that I am sure will be done away in the future editions. But with the writing and the story - full 5/5 stars!

This author is a powerhouse of stories!

‘The rude tenderness of our hearts’ is a collection of seven short stories of every mood. The stories are distinct in mood and structure and every story will take you in a new world. The stories reach to your heart and while it makes you fall in love in one, in other it will make you sympathize with the protagonist of the story. The stories are full of emotions of love, anger, sadness, disgust, surprise.

The book has a story of true love titled ‘Love in Yale’ where a young and bright student of Arts at Yale University, Smith, falls in love. It’s surprising to see who he falls in love with. The story ‘Love in Yale’ will surprise you to no end.

The stories came from the heart and each story dipped into deep emotions of life. The length of the book makes it a travel companion. It is a short book of only 100 pages with seven short stories. This book is also a good read for those who prefer short reads over lengthy books or who do like reading but do not get much time to read. You can schedule this book in your weekend plan.

The Rude Tenderness of Our Hearts by Saket Suryesh is a collection of 7 short stories which are, as the title suggests, sad and to some extent rude. Because they depict rudeness of life, how life has failed people in different circumstances. Each story has the potential to move you inside out.

There is a love story, a story of a family man, a mythological love tale, a story of a father and a child, a story on honor killing, and a story of a soldier and his fate. What impressed me was that author also covered some social issues like honor killing. There are stories which send a strong message to the society as well. My personal favourites would be Shiv and Shailputri, What Honor? and The Death of a Soldier.

The book is an easy read, can be finished in a day. It can be a good weekend pick. Special mention to the cover of the book, its beautiful, and does full justice to the title.

The only drawback or the weak point would be the grammatical and spelling mistakes which I tried but couldn’t ignore. There are many loopholes in that front and a good proof reading/copy editing would have helped. And that is the only thing which compelled me to call it a 2 starrer.

7 stories. Different contexts. Diverse emotions. One feel- MUST READ.
Every story develops in different background, expresses different emotions.
Divine passionate love, sacrifice of a father, self dialogue and assessment of busy life race, poverty v/s fatherhood, honour killing, life priorities, patriotism- and lot more.
Usual humanly emotions/qualities with unusual narration. The classy selection of words and the mesmerizing way of story telling- it has it all.
Every story the book narrates, makes home within you in one or the other form. Every character it creates, merges within your soul. Every story binds you and at the same time frees you too.

Saket is gifted with a different type of story telling that connects readers strongly with him and book!

The tenderness, when it is genuine, cannot stand easy definitions and creeps with gentle tenacity among the great civic virtues and rhetoric of power. It is what we lack in order to feel and live in a common world at last and is all the more important today, as much as the reality, in dull heaviness, that it becomes narcissistic, violent and sentimental at the same time.

Talking about tenderness is to speak of love, of the passage of time, of philosophy. It means talking about humanity, curiosity towards the other, of that profound lightness that allows us to intercept, between the lines, the most fruitful and creative sense of our finitude and of our fragility.

The book touches many sensitive strings, moves ancestral suffering, evokes the intensity of the life of the body and the soul, challenge predators and bullies, raises uncomfortable questions and provides new instructions, turn on small, miraculous lights in the dark announcing a joyful and constructive, political and existential revolution. What calls us by name, and extends his gaze to the future.

Actually I should not talk about it as a book, but of short stories full of sound and voice, which on the other side is also very different in style and content, whose glue seems to be the ability to take us somewhere else, to allow the reader to move into a space of fantasy, imagination and memory, to offer the knowledge that we are incomplete beings, who are fragile and that creativity can turn the burden of life in a profound lightness, like a hug or a caress, an antidote to abrupt indifference or contrived emotions.

Saket Suryesh tell the stories that are dearest to us, because the emotions fully emerged, as to affirm humanity and be heard much from heart, to feel and understand the sense of artistic and human experience. The book is intimate which consequently become absolutely universal and deeply human.

This is a very nice book in which we can lose ourselves fascinated by a thousand details with pretty stories that are engaging and well-written. It’s a book that everyone should read as it contains beautiful and simple stories full of tenderness and sweetness to which we are not used to.

"It is only in love, we transcend our physical being, and we go beyond the smallness of our physical being."

The Rude Tenderness of Our Hearts by Saket Suryesh is a collection of seven sad short stories each set in different times and worlds. short stories are always easy to read but these tales will leave you teary eyed thinking about the characters, human emotions, their heart breaking story and their sorrowness.

This book is a great read for those who prefer short stories.
Each tale begins with a poem that gives you an idea of how the story will proceed.

The first story Love in Yale is surprising yet thoughtful which depicts the passion, helplessness and pain of an artist.
the next story is titled 'Betrayed by Time' is about present condition where everyone seems to be trapped in rattrap. The book proceeds with stories 'Shiv and Shailputri' and 'A Bloodied Broken Moon' which depicts the relation of father and daughter, where a poor father fights against all odds for his daughter but ending will surely leave one heartbroken.

Each tale is heart touching with ending so predictable yet different. Author has done terrific job by weaving tales and depicting such deep emotions in short stories which will left one introspecting about the characters for sure.

This book is essentially as the title suggests is a collection of short sad stories. The stories revolve around human feelings of emotion and sadness, making you realise that you are way too happy than a lot of other people in this world.
The book has 7 stories; each is based in a different time zone and a different place. Every story starts with a sonnet that gives a vague idea of what the story is going to be about.
One story is a love story based in Yale, a somewhat quirky love story between a man and a non living thing. The other is about a young modern family of our times where jobs are stressful and everyone seems to be in a rat race. Everyone wants to win the race but ultimately when they do, they also realise that they were in the wrong race all along and by that time, it’s too late to do anything.
One is a mythological inspired story , one is about a poor man’s daughter for whom he fights with the world for existence but doesn’t succeed for long, one is a story about honour killing, one is about another poor man who makes living out of giving joy to others but who is very unfortunate and sad from within. The last story is about the soldiers who bravely fight at the border and end up in sacrificing their lives for the country.
The book will surely bring tears to your eyes in almost every story. It will make you feel sad and will make you feel depressed. Do not expect any commercial entertainment or thrilling suspense in any of the stories, they all end up being tragic.
Saket Suryesh does a terrific job of conveying his messages through his stories, but the language could have been simpler. There are plenty of words in each chapter where a normal reader might have to refer to a dictionary more than a dozen times. This I am afraid might put the reader off the book at times. The stories are already sad and stressful, the reader doesn’t want any more stress by wondering the meanings of quite a few words. Words like pedagogy, incredulity, ennui, etc could be avoided best.
Overall, a short book, quick to read, a little easy on the vocabulary would have made the book convey the messages in a better way.

First of all, I would like to thanks the author for sending me a signed copy of his book. After receiving the book my first impression was wow, what a beautiful cover this book has! And I thought it must be a love story book, but this book is a collection of the short story.

Summary:

This book includes 7 stories. Each story is heart touching and the characters are from our daily life. The first story ‘Love in Yale’ is little tricky and is insightful.

The next story ‘Betrayed by time’ is an open mirror for all of us who are busy in improving the standard of living but totally forget what is the best thing life is offering. I have read a story like this before but in a different context.

The third story, ‘Shiv and Shailputri’ is an excellent read, which depicts the relation of father and daughter as well as a true meaning of love.

‘A Bloodied broken moon’ & ‘What honour?’ stories are based on father-daughter relationship however both the stories have a different fate.

‘A Sad Christmas’ is a heart-touching story where a father, impersonating in Santa Claus laughing on the night of Christmas is sadly longing for her son.

‘The death of a soldier’ story depicts an untouched emotion of soldier’s and his family who martyr for this country.

This book can be finished in good 2 to 3 hours, so I suggest you read it in a weekend. Overall a perfect platter of short stories ready to devour in weekends!

I figure the name of this book is kind of apt because every story was rude. Short stories are tricky; to get everything written out and plotted in just a few pages is a daunting task. Reading is the easy part in such cases. But I say these stories were rude because they do not make reading easy. They captivate you. You are left wondering about characters, futures, hows and whys. And trust me, somewhere within, you feel pain and anguish. And I think it is especially rude for just a few pages to make me feel that way.

It is for this precise reason that Saket Suryesh needs to be commended as well. He has worked his magic into every story in The Rude Tenderness of Our Hearts. There will always be favourites that every reader will have in a collection of short stories, but in this case, one will be hard-pressed to pick a favourite. Each story is sharp and crisp, nary an unnecessary word anywhere, so well written that it was a joy to read. You can finish reading this book within an hour. (If you are very sensitive, you may also shed a few tears during that time.)

I love reading short stories, as in the preface the author says, short stories comes with their own complexities. 7 Stories from different context all with an ending which can leave you teary eyed. I had few of those while reading this book. Few of the characters are relatable, for me the melancholy theme in the entire book just stood out. As I read further, I felt one emotion in particular is common, fatherhood.
The stories are very well written and is high on emotions, love his usage of poems and the one which particularly blew my mind was Faiz Ahmed Faiz my fan moment and one additional star for the same. :)
The writing is sharp and crisp, none of the story felt overstretched. Its an easy read.
Overall for me its a must must read!
Luckily I have a signed copy from the author so yaaay!!!
Happy reading all!!!!

The Rude Tenderness Of Our Hearts" is a collection of 7 short stories, each of which has a profound sadness and an air of melancholy concealed in its bosom. I really liked the choice of the title of the book and how it perfectly matches with the stories in the book.

The first story "Love in Yale" is a story of an artist's love for his creation. This story has thrill, longing and sadness in equal proportions. I loved the way the author has narrated the story, describing each and every emotion of the characters in a subtle yet beautiful way. This is one of my favorite stories of this collection. I found the plot unique and the writing unadulterated.

Title and Cover :

The title 'The Rude Tenderness of our Hearts' reveals that the book deals with the rough and gentleness embodied in human hearts since the oxymoron in the title infuses suspense in the readers. But the cover page could have been better as the cover page is the first thing every readers note before picking up a book.

Review :
The book is a collection of 7 short stories which are unique and different from each other. Every stories are well woven with heart stirring emotions and are narrated well with utmost care. Almost every stories had a tragic ending which were easy to guess but the way of story telling upheld the stories. Apart from dealing with the emotions persisting in a family, some stories also deals with patriotism, social issues and parental care. Some stories had the ability to pierce our heart with their plot and some weren't that good. The words were simple and elegant which maintained coherence of the book. The story which deeply touched my heart is A Bloodied Broken Moon which deals with the love of a poor father towards his little daughter and how mercilessly his daughter was killed leaving him forsaken. And the story The death of a soldier not only speaks about the love of a husband and wife but also about the struggles every army men undergo for his nation when the corrupted politicians were busy in thinking of ways to pile up their wealth. The book had some typo errors and the poems at the start of every story prepares us to travel through the story.
My view :
This book is packed with overflowing emotions about every relationship of life - father and son, father and daughter, husband and wife, friendship etc. A good try but could have been better.
