There's some utility here, covering enough basics to get the imagination going. But all that 'Boosting Body Image' stuff just made me think "*sigh* I gotta start lifting weights." I'm not gonna hold that against it.
A short read of six chapters with a heavy focus of Do You, Be You which is a nice message for a younger audience than someone approaching their 30s. It is definitely more geared towards teens and young adults in school trying to figure out how they want to be perceived by their peers. It contains a couple of style tips I found useful such as how to highlight and downplay body features, the rule of thirds, and what hem and breaks do (keeping in mind that this is the first style book I’ve read…I’m not really a fashionista, I saw this book available at my local library and decided to pick it up on a whim. I’m definitely a jeans and t-shirt gal so…just wanted to take a peek into the dark side and see what other options there are). It seems like a good start into thinking about what you want your style to be but does not contain in depth information like color matching/contrasting, seasonal tones, or technical clothes terms etc.
This is the first and hopefully last book I give a one star to. Perhaps it is geared for "gender fluid" (using the authors words for high schoolers. At 39 years old, I got nothing out of this book. I was hoping this book would tell me what colors go together, what type of clothes work best for my body type.
I picked this up while previewing for a middle school audience. Super outside my comfort zone but wonderfully positive and accessible. I wish this book had been around when I was in middle school.
This was a Netgalley book: What a fabulous book. I wish I could buy one for every girl at our school ... not just for the teenagers either ... I got some good hints as well. It talks about models and body image, bloggers, what works well for YOU! Loved it! More power to the young women of our world :)
