This book is the reason I am taking a long break from Markus Heitz books.
My biggest gripe with this book is that it could have been 200 pages long and told the same story. It just drags on and on. New plotlines are opened, but end not even 20 pages later and add nothing to the story overall. The character development is non-existent or makes no sense, the plotarmor is ludicrous, characters act in ridiculous ways and there were so many parts where I physically cringed or had to roll my eyes for how convenient for the plot some stuff was.
Just to give you an example: at some point Erik is out in a cold winter night. Its snowing and the wind is howling (there is an assassin trying to kill him which we don't know at that point). Suddenly the wind stops for a few seconds (completely random) but exactly in this second the assassin shots (which conveniently gives Erik a chance to hear him), but it doesn't end there. The bullet of the assassin doesn't go off. It's a dud. I mean come on, really? And this is after Erik has already been saved multiple times by pure randomnes.
I don't need to know everytime that Erik gets into a car that he is driving a Porsche Cayenne, the 100 times it was mentioned in the first book sufficed. I don't need to know that he is taking gamma-hydroxy-butric acid EVERY time his drops are mentioned. They are simply knockout drops, why the complicated name? I don't need to know that Erik is using a G3 riffle, an outdated version of the assualt rifle that is used by the "Bundeswehr" in the middle of an action sequence. Why would I care for that information in the middle of a fight? And I know Erik is meant to be a caricature of an Action-Hero, but damn, he is like a walking cliche. You made your point, no need to hammer it in like this.
From here on out we are going into HEAVY spoiler territory:
What is Gregorias deal? She's a god fearing woman and should act like that, but all she does is lie, make strange alliances and lie again. She lies to Jean, confesses, realizes so much stuff could have been prevented if she would have told him earlier, but 20 pages later she lies to him again. And this time it's even worse.
Justines plotline ends in an unspectacular death and her contribution to the story was small to non existent.
Roscolio, a Were-Panther and an intriguing character is introduced and then killed of in the span of around 50 pages?
So many people die, but not once was I invested in the character enough to really care, since most of them are either unlikable or don't get enough spotlight.
In the end there happens a plottwist that was completely unnecessary because it is based of of an event that happened before the start of the first book. Severina slept with the murderer of her husband three times to "toy with him", she gets hit by a shotgun at close range (TWICE) and heals almost instantly, but she gave herself a black eye to fake being hit, and that didn't heal immediately?
Jean is acting like a complete moron. Near the end of the book he gets bitten by a werewolf, so he is 100% infected. He tries to take the sanctum to heal, puts it on his finger and the first half gets blown away by the wind? This stuff is extremely valuable and rare and this is how you handle it? Well it doesn't matter, because it was fake anyway, and apparently Jean never had the idea that missing out on the near-death experience that the other two wolves had that took it could be an indicator that maybe it didn't work? He never even has the idea to maybe try to touch some silver even though he has nightmares, is sick etc. etc.?
Oh and it gets worse. He finally finds the Comte (because the Comte comes to him) and is approached by him. Conveniently the Comte is completely unarmed. Jean then proceeds to put some silver bullets into him (non lethal so he can get information) but after understanding that he won't get anything out of him he decides to kill him. And instead of making it quick (after letting him get away already once, because of his arrogance) he steps out in the BRIGHT MOONLIGHT to kill him. After nearly getting knocked out (by who knows what, it isn't ever mentioned) the Comte is killed by a Seraph, but Jean turns into a Wolf and kills the Seraph. Another plotline that vanishes into nothingness as soon as she got some character.
Eric somehow thinks of Lena as the love of his live, after knowing her for about half a book? And Lena nearly doesn't show up at all for the entire book.
I could go on and on, but I think I made my point. This book isn't worth the 600 pages it takes to tell its story.
