"The Tutor" is Chapter One of "Claire", WINNER of the 2019 Next Generation Indie Book Paranormal category.
Young Max hates Fourth Grade math. His teenage friend Claire is an ace with numbers, and is always eager to help him with his homework. Max adores her, and loves when she visits him in the old house on Hollow Street.
Claire can also weave a ghost story like no one else. But her favorite tale always sends chills down his spine, and hits a little too close to home...
Rod A. Galindo is a child of the ‘70s and ‘80s. He holds a B. A. in Psychology from the University of Kansas, and will probably work for the U.S. Government ‘till the end of his days. Two of his offspring are cyber-smart teenaged boys to whom he goes for all technical quandaries, and the other is a sharp-witted German Army (Bundeswehr) Soldatin who is as dangerously clever as she is beautiful. He also fills in as full-time father to a special little social butterfly who never really had a dad to call her own.
“Major” Galindo (retired) has nearly thirty years of service under his belt in the U. S. Army, both Active Duty and in the Kansas Army National Guard. As both an enlisted man and an artillery officer, he has served in Operation Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq, Operation Noble Eagle in Kansas, Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq, and Operation Inherent Resolve in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
Rod has traveled all over the planet and back again, but calls Kansas City home. Enjoy his shiny art or delve into his literary musings at RodWerks.net or RodGalindo.com.
It is important to note two things. One, this is a short story that is advertisement for a collection of short stories about the title character. So the book is about half short story, and then you get teasers. Now, this is fine. I didn't pay for it; it was a kindle freebie and I have no problem with free kindle books, in particular books that make it clear that it is a short read, as a teaser for a long work. The short story is short, but complete, so there is no cliffhanger.
It isn't the scariest ghost story I've read, but it's not the worse one. The two central characters are well drawn, and it does work with the intended young audience interms of content. I'm not sure I would recommend it to adults, but say readers around 10-13.
This short story was an absolutely enjoying read. At first I never suspected anything out of the ordinary and just thought it was two kids telling each other ghost stories. But as the short story wrapped up it turned out to be so much more than that. It turned out to be a ghost story with a nice little twist, which I don't think I've ever experienced.
The Tutor starts with Max doing his homework then quickly turns into a ghost story being told. The story is recounted so vividly it sucks you in as if you were right there watching the story take place. And when Max starts to feel anxious you can't help but feel it as well, because he's heard this story before, so his emotions carry out of the pages. Which is fantastic, I like being a little anxious, if not scared, when reading a ghost story. And I can say that I didn't see what happened with The Tutor coming.
I highly recommend this short story and I look forward to reading more about Claire and her adventures.
I enjoy a good story. I have since I was a little girl. I am always searching for a story with a haunted house. It has to have a secret and not too much gore just enough for chills. The ending has to have a unique twist that gets you, so you can feel your heart thump and say Wow! The Tutor did just that for me. I hope Mr Galindo writes another ghost story. Oh ,I told this story to my husband. When I got to the ending his eye's opened wide and his mouth dropped. Yeah!
The Tutor was quite surprising. Author Rod A. Galindo has a way with words. He drew me into his story so easily. As Max and Claire sit together, going over math, Max asks for a story. Claire complies with a very intricate tale. To be honest, I’d quite forgotten that I was reading a ghost story until the end. That was how masterful the crafted prose. The descriptions were well written, and the story very enjoyable.
I love this book. It was fun, entertaining, and just a great book too read if you like to be scared. I really didn't know it was scary till the end. It really gave me chills. And for younger readers..... sleep well. I don't mean to be mean or make you feel scared and I am sorry if I upset people. :( it is a great book and fun to read. I would decrement it for 10+ unless they can't two the pressure.
Sweet yet slightly spooky short story from an author I haven't read before. I love Claire's sense of humour and her cheekiness - which weirdly goes remarkably well with the ghost story setting. There is a bonus preview from the author's upcoming book release which shows this to full effect. I'll be keeping an eye out for the novel of collected short stories covering Claire's life released in 2017. (No spoilers given)
If you’re in the mood for a quick short story with surprises, this could be a good one to check out.
At first glance, “The Tutor: A Ghost Story” appears to be a narrative of two kids having fun, entertaining each other with ghost stories. By the end though, there is so much more to the tale. Readers won’t see it coming.
Max, a kid doing homework, and Claire, helping him, are brought to life in such a short space of time as their tale unfolds. Readers are smoothly brought along for the ride as good descriptions help to fill out the tapestry of the plot.
Expectations are well met for those in the mood to read good ghost stories. The author did a good job bringing it all together in a satisfying way.
I was trying to end my Goodreads challenge for this year and was looking for a short book to finish it off. I have read a variety of books and have to confess my inclination is to detective stories or paranormal. I did a search of a free Kindle novel and it threw up this and I have to say I really enjoyed it. It has a touch of humour and I did not see what was coming. I liked the two main characters and could just imagine them quite easily. I confess I don't know the author but from this short novella, he seems promising.
This short story although it's a nice simple VERY short story the book actually finishes at 52%. The rest of the book is an excerpt from another book which feels like they put more work into that one rather than trying to impress people with this story on it's own merit. This is nothing more than a marketing tool, instead of an excellent story in it's own right.
I chose this short story because the synopsis intrigued me. I read the entire story and didn't want to put it down. I continued to read until the abrupt ending. Now, I feel as though I need to know mire. I suppose I'll be reading the remainder of stories in this series.
Half way through I got into it and then it abruptly ended. Sadly you have to read the other books to see the haunting properly. This story is simply two characters telling each other a ghost story. I expected slightly more perhaps a ghost or two talking etc? Rather than just two people telling a story. Thanks for the free book though.
A will written fantasy thriller short story by Rod Galindo about love 💘, ghost 👻, and murder. Two young 👦 lovers, one staying, the other leaving then murder and a ghost 👻 forever in the room. I would highly recommend this fantasy short story. Enjoy the ad0enture of novels 🔰😀 2022😠
I love ghost stories. This is refreshingly different from the ghostly every once i usually read..... Love it.... Can't put it down... And love that it is read to me while I read along! Thank you
I really like this little ghost story, I read it on my lunch break. It was a little creepy and had a twist at the end that I kind of started suspecting when his mom came to his door and was confirmed at the end. Perfect little ghost story for a quick read.
An interesting story that had enough in for me to enjoy in 5 mins. I read the preview at the end for what I believe is a follow on and I will be keeping an eye on it for when I need something to watch. All in all a reasonable short story.
