This is great writing that isn't showy, the kind that has the reader frequently nodding in understanding and then realizing, halfway through a story, that she's holding a rare thing: a collection of understated brilliance. Connelly's collection looks at what happens just before people fall through the cracks, when the realizations occur that the best-laid plans may have been for naught, that circumstances sometimes trump everything. There's nothing bombastic here, but it's thrilling just the same to see a writer in top form.
