Bruce Dickinson: Maiden Voyage

Rate this book
Bruce Dickinson is the mighty voice behind heavy metal behemoths Iron Maiden, and many more things besides. There is no one else like him in music today.

Acclaimed rock vocalist, airline pilot, fencer, author – Bruce Dickinson is a true renaissance man. After first leaving Iron Maiden in 1993 to concentrate on his solo career, his return to the band coincided with their resurgence, and they remain one of the world’s most commercially successful acts.

Iron Maiden’s most recent album, 2015’s The Book of Souls, was their fifth UK no.1 and gave the band their best ever US charting. In 2016, they will be embarking on a world tour taking in 35 countries. They are a truly colossal force in music.

Featuring a foreword from Deep Purple’s Ian Gillan and exclusive interviews from heavy metal luminaries including Paul Di’Anno and Blaze Bayley, this is an authoritative biography of one of music’s most compelling figures.

Joe Shooman is a music journalist who has written for several rock and metal magazines. He is also the author of biographies on Blink 182, Trivium and Kasabian.

Shooman writes an earnest enough account of the life of Bruce Dickinson, but this book suffers from several key shortcomings. Its language is often a tangled, verbose morass of mixed metaphor, and there is some lacklustre basic editing when it comes to spelling and grammar. These are not unusual flaws in a rock biography, but it unfortunately also suffers greatly from a lack of official access. The book claims to not be a book about Iron Maiden, but to be the story of the life of Bruce Dickinson; yet the book is primarily a series of release dates, tour dates, and a collection of album reviews by the author. Any reader of this book will already, I am sure, be quite familiar with Iron Maiden's records. To be fair, we are given an account of his love of flying aircraft, and his passion and success as a fencer. However, where is any of the real detail about his life? His marriages, his children, and his own reflections without specific context are conspicuously absent. Quotes from Bruce are rare, and are culled from a variety of previously published material. The new material presented is from an eclectic series of sources, and while they do have genuine insights and experiences with Dickinson in the first person, they often digress into discussing their own careers. One could be forgiven for thinking the sprawling chapters on Bruce's pre-Maiden musical career were taken from a biography of Thunderstick (drummer for Samson) rather than Bruce Dickinson. This reliance on third party sources results in blatant errors, for example Nicko McBrain playing a double kick pedal, or MS being a "muscle wasting disease", that shake the readers confidence in the veracity of the balance of the material. On the positive side, there are some truly entertaining anecdotes from colourful members of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal movement, and the review-like accounts of the solo albums may be of greater benefit to those unfamiliar with Bruce's musical output outside of Iron Maiden. The language, while often convoluted with forced allusion and metaphor, is lively and impassioned. The desire to explore Bruce's world shines through, and perhaps with access to the subject, this book may have been a more complete and compelling account of his life to date. As it stands, it is a colourful and oft-times droll series of anecdotes, dragged down by a mass of unnecessary album reviews and minor inaccuracies that left me a little disappointed.

I truly admire and have a deep respect for Bruce Dickinson -not only because he's the singer of one of my favourite band ('we're Iroooooon Maiden!') but, also for his personality. A go-and-get-it kind of guy, driven, passionate, he is a Renaissance man like I wish I could be: heavy metal singer, fencer champion, airplanes' pilot, writer, radio DJ, entrepreneur etc. The guy managed to pack in one life what others achieve in ten!

When I picked up this book I expected to read Bruce's biography that is, his childhood, private life and, well, blablabla! However that's not what it turned out to be. This is more a story of the bands in which Bruce featured and, the way they have interacted with each other than, his life per se. Never mind! It was not disappointing as, the whole remains interesting. We are thrown back in the time where his career kicked off (the NWOBHM era), learn a hell of a lot about the Samson period, go through the Iron Maiden saga via a kind of chronicle of each albums (always enjoyable for the fans), discover his solo career from a passionate angle and, return to Maiden up to the 'A Matter of Life and Death' album. It's all worthy for the fans and, even if Shooman's style of writing is a bit pedantic, the personality of Bruce transpires in every pages: a man driven by incredible ambitions, who always has his eyes set on the next challenge.

Joe Shooman's bio of Bruce Dickinson seems more of a treatment of British heavy metal in general than a detailed look into the life of one of the greatest metal vocalists ever. Shooman certainly spent a lot of time speaking with many of the people that were part of Bruce's rise to prominence, but it seemed like the quotes from the man himself were fewer and far between. I hadn't followed Bruce's solo career at all, so I did appreciate the detail the author went into and will look forward to picking up those albums, and I had no idea that Dickinson was an author as well. The Adventures of Lord Iffy Boatrace I'd give the book 2.5 stars, but the pointers to additional material of Dickinson's bumps it up to 3.

Ops!

Repugnante, condenável e, no mínimo... dispensável.

Nota do livro: 6,53 (3 estrelas).

I'm a huge fan of Bruce Dickinson and his prolific career. This book does a good job highlighting his major spots. However, it seems to be a written by his best friend, which means it only has compliments. Also, the translation to Portuguese was below average.

I see some negative comments about this book, but I believe people are taking it too seriously. This is not a full bio of Bruce Dickinson: it is more a collection of moments since his early days with Samson, then as the greatest Metal singer of the greatest Metal band, then his solo career, and his return to Maiden.
It is entertaining enough, and you can get familiar with several facts that may be less known about Bruce, especially in tems of his humanitarian side, supporting organizations, flying people around and etc.
This is no deep account of his life. But is a good tale of a restless man, always searching for more, and always looking for knowledge and growth. Something that we should all be looking for.

A disappointment. I thought it would be a biography of one of my all-time favoourite artists but it turned out to be more of an over-view of the British rock scene at the time of Bruce's breakthrough.

It is so bad that it actually brought tears to my eyes - stay far far away from it . Read Run to the hills instead.

I picked this up intending to read it as a stop-gap before Bruce's autobiography is released in a month or so, and I began it not expecting all that much, to be honest, based on some other reviews which I'd seen. But, it's really quite a good book and has some great insights and critiques of much of the music which Bruce has been involved with over the years. It's quite up to date (published 2016) and tells the story right up to the release of Iron Maiden's awesome The Book of Souls double album and Bruce's much publicized cancer scare in which he, yet again, demonstrates his grit.

I've always been a very big fan of Bruce Dickinson, from first hearing him belt out Run to the Hills back in 1982 when I was a kid through until now where his unstoppable energy and enthusiasm has taken him to achieve some great things. And there seems to be no stopping him either. I guess that I feel that Bruce and I may be very similar, because his artistic and social sensibilities have always appealed to me. He is also very much involved in aviation which is the industry in which I also ply my trade.

The book itself is quite well written by Joe Shooman, and he weaves the story of Bruce's early life and his introduction to the London rock scene rather well given the sheer pace of events. I found the early history part particularly interesting because of my fascination with the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) era that was so hugely influential to rock music and spawned some of the best rock and metal acts to ever play a not. Many later and now contemporary bands really owe the depth of their sound to these British lads who busted out of the ghastly punk scene and forged something quite incredible.

As mentioned, I really liked Shooman's descriptions and critiques of Bruce's solo albums and some of Iron Maiden's albums as well. It all helped because the author reflected a lot of my own opinions of the music and made this a text that I could easily relate to in an academic sense. I was always eager to pick up reading from where I left off and the pace was good and moved along nicely. The chapters are arranged well, and they often end on a bit of a "cliffhanger", but flicking the page enables you to pick up again the next time you read quite seamlessly.

Overall this is a good book, not too long yet not lacking in substance or depth of information. A recommended read for anybody interested in Bruce Dickinson or Iron Maiden. I enjoyed reading it a lot.

I had high hopes for this, as from what I knew of Bruce Dickinson it should be a rollercoaster..
I was bitterly disappointed, it was written in a dry, dull fashion. There were spurious asides from the author, which added little.
There are interesting direct quotes, but these are buried in an avalanche of author opinion, primarily around the scope and scale of Iron Maiden tracks.
I suspect I should have bought the autobiography instead.

Interesting if you are not familiar with who Bruce Dickinson ir or not a Iron Maiden/Dickinson fan.
If you are a fan you will get some good stories from the Samson era but don't expect many details on the Maiden era.

I felt that there are too many quotes from other sites/interviews.

Awful. Really bad. Thanks to my friend for loaning it to me though! He did say it was DIRE and he was not wrong.
The only reason I gave it a star was because it mentioned an Iron Maiden album I did not know about.
The rest was painful.

finally starting this book, taken me ages to get round to it, but I'm finally on page 1!

Okay, finally finished the book, took me some time. I have to admit I'm not the hugest Iron Maiden fan in the world, but I do think they're a fantastic band and my one and only concert was freaking awesome! I've learnt a hell of a lot more about Bruce, I already knew he was a pilot as he was the co-pilot on one of my flights home from a holiday in Turkey one year. I was the only person on the plane who went "whoohoo!" when they announced his name. My friend turned to me and said "who?". I started to wonder why we were friends, but I digress.

Is it a bit weird that earlier on I was reading the book in a chinese restaurant while listening to The Carpenters and Buddy Holly on my Ipod? To be fair I did put Fear of the Dark on for the walk home just to balance things up a bit...

Anyway, finally got this one under my belt and I can hand it back to my brother when I see him on 1 August, just before we go to, yep, you guessed it, an Iron Maiden concert in Cardiff! Rock on!!!
