It was good for about 2/3 of the book, though I was a little annoyed when it became obvious it was "Christian Fiction." But, I like Christian Fiction and read a lot of it. It was more a "truth in advertising" issue. Nowhere was it made known this was so. Whatever.
Then, the book fell apart.
It was a mystery, and the "bad guy" just disappears. It was a romance, and, at the end, the couple will be 1000 miles away from each other. A marital conflict in a secondary couple appears only superficially resolved. The idea that all 4 of the 5 principals will suddenly decide to go on a mission trip together is possible, but highly unlikely under the circumstances described. I don't mind "cliffhanger" endings, particularly in a series, but that is not what happened. The book just stopped, and the next page was blank.
Finally, it was the worst kind of Christian Fiction - totally unrealistic. There is a "15-minute conversion." Though this could happen, my years as an ordained minister show it usually does not, and, if it does, it is usually very shallow. One of the characters assures another that they will be totally safe if they trust in JE-sus. This is just a very scant version of the "prosperity gospel," and it is wrong, except on the spiritual side. Try telling that to Jesus (who dies on a cross), Justin Martyr, Perpetua and Felicity, Maximillian Kolb, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, etc. Besides, the character's trust in Jesus completely fails when she is kidnapped, she is obviously fearful instead of feeling "safe in the sweet arms of JE-sus," and she screams herself hoarse.
There are very few books, especially "First Read" books I wish I had not taken the time for. This is one of them.
A great read. The subject was a bit scary as it does happen all the time., but it was dealt with in a manner that enlightened without making me feel ready to put the book down. Instead, it made me even more involved. At the end it became a bit preachy, which I did not care for. It derailed the storyline a little. The cliffhanger ending left me needing to read the next book, although I do not like cliffhangers.
Burning Suspicion by Sherry Rummler is a great read. Fast paced and well written, I was captivated and read it cover to cover. I had been searching for a book that I couldn't put down and found it in Burning Sispicion. A real cliff-hanger...I cannot wait for the sequel! Kudos to the author!
