This WOULD HAVE been a 4 star. Let's discuss. 📺 The beginning is verrrry standard. In which I didn't care that much. 📺 Rise and Nanako scene was cute, I liked ir a lot. I didn't really get the "I'm an idiot" part but it was nice. 📺 The amount of Naoto in this chapter feels like it should have been spread out more evenly. Of course this would have to switch the timeline a bit but I think it would've been worth it. The current structure goes as follows: They hear about a hot shot child detective, bad first impression of Naoto, ultimately dislikes Naoto. Theres maybe a chapter between each beat. Of course them hearing about the hot shot detective comes as a result of Adachi's flub in the last volume. I think the middle portion could have been done last volume as Naoto is established to be aware of the case since volume 3. 📺 I didn't realise until this volume but Yosuke's characterization is all over the place. It's evident when he nearly attacks Naoto. Where did this short fuse come from? It may have been triggered from the thought of Saki but he hasn't really shown a wide range of emotions since the first volume. Not to go so far as to attack someone. The thing about Yosuke is that he's meant to be a character that adapts based on the mood. This means he is serious when he needs to be. But I realise that he is rarely ever serious, even when discussing the murders. So for him to suddenly have this emotional moment where he proclaims that no one deserves to die like that is very out of the blue. It especially doesn't fit when you think about his future action... Cough, Namatame, cough. Between this and Teddy, this volume is meant to show that Yosuke is multifaceted and that he has this inner turmoil... Except it's not well established at all. I like what they were going for but I felt more like laughing when Yosuke suddenly leapt to his feet in a passionate rage. If I think abt it this may have also carried on into the games. But the games had Yosuke's social link which adequately established his wider range of emotions and his sensitivity. 📺 Naoki was cool!! But rushed. Like everything else in this manga. It should've been established sooner. Like, right after Saki's death. Ngl I forgot she even had a brother. And we see them hangout for like two frames?? Then syddenly Naoki sees Yosuke in a better light and wants to change. This was a really bad adaptation of his social link but it does get the point across. If anything it only goes to highlight Yosuke's character, a highlight which I enjoyed. It did come a little late imo but I'm glad that we got to see the more sensitive side of Yosuke. I don't count the Naoto scene.

Man do I not like Yosuke - but Rise is really great, and I like basically all the rest of the cast, too. Shoutout to hot Teddie btw, did not see that coming.
