Three plays span time and geography to focus on three women poets. The first is Ono no Komachi, a 9th Century Japanese poet who duels here with a Prince to play out the representation of her love poems which mark her as an independent intellectual. The second is Sister Hrosvitha whose writing sets her apart from Saxony nuns in the 10th century. Her frank sexual awareness is represented through Linney's play in which her characters speak to her and move her toward greater insight. Anna Akmatova is the final poet, a mother, poet, and activist whose sly suggestions lead members of the Russian oligarchy to shrug off her latest artistic efforts, unaware of the continued power she holds
An important tribute to the power of poetry and of women's strength, cleverness, and resilience. Linney's sparely staged work puts the focus on the women's voices where each belongs and shines through to resonate in the 21st century.
This is a series of three interconnected short plays about great female poets. The overarching theme is how women's art can disruptively challenge systems built on patriarchal authority and the presumption that men's voices should be the only ones heard within a society. https://youtu.be/GWbz-t6JVHY
