Y'all: The Definitive Guide to Being a Texan

Rate this book
A Texas native offers a humorous guide to the ins and outs of life as a Texan.

The Lone Star State can seem like an enigma to those who have never had the pleasure of spending time there. Texans seem to walk differently, talk differently, and dress differently than any other people in the nation. Jay B Sauceda, a Texas native, understands the trouble that “foreigners” from New York to California have comprehendin’ their Texan neighbors. This funny and engaging primer on how to be a Texan will help you get a better handle on the unique Texas history, language, cuisine, culture, customs, and do’s and don’ts―whether you’re movin’ there or just passin’ through.

Y'ALL COME BACK NOW, Y'HEAR?

I won't pick over what got in this book and what got left out; I won't whinge over Mexia being mispronounced Meh-ee-ah, instead of Meh-hay-ya (properly), when we all know Boerne is the REAL shibboleth here, such that "Burney" is sumplace over to Arkansaw?? But I have two goats to bleat here.
(1)Jay, if you're gonna be truth to tell, your Mama taught you three things: the kindness of opening doors, addressing women politely, and saying please and thank you, especially to God for making you your mama's child and a Texan.
(2) You left out the caveat my papa always said: "Texas born or Texas bred, Texan till you're dead. And. probably then some." Maybe you didn't want to explain what it means, maybe that's too deep in the club, and you didn't want to scare anybody. But. You shoulda said.

Finally. Big no-no. Okay, you aren't a Texas woman, so that's partly an excuse, but you were raised by one, and as sacred the commandment of no beans in chili, is the following:

NEVER EVER, I MEAN EVER EVER PUT CORN SYRUP IN PECAN PIE. THERE IS NO CORN IN PECAN PIE, EVER!!!L. What in the blue nose of state taxation is the matter with you? Brown sugar and white sugar. I am disgusted to my roots.

Meanwhile. Thank you for reminding me to spend a few moments missin' my home and family and smells in the air. Of being able to smile while walking down the street, sayin' hey, beautiful day right now, and you look great in that seersucker suit! without getting a look of overweening terror and a step back. And best of all, knowing I lived in a city , a state, that puts money where its braggin' is, that raised more money for any little Jessica who fell in a well, or Jerry's Kid, or homes for Katrina's fury (with LSU football teams embarrassing all the southern conference) because the pleasure of having is amazingly surpassed by the joy of generosity and our Cajun and Sooner neighbors know that two way street too well. Yep. As I see it, the major problem with only five stars is that's all our flag has as well, so what else can I give you, but a big thank you, a smile, a GO TEXAN!
